Book A Pastoral Democracy

    Book Details:
  • Author : I. M. Lewis
  • Publisher : LIT Verlag Münster
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9783825830847
  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book A Pastoral Democracy written by I. M. Lewis and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 1999 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, shortly after establishment of the independent Somali Republic, the first step towards the formation of a 'Greater Somalia', brought this North-East African Muslim nation a prominence which it had not enjoyed since the British campaigns against the 'Mad Mullah' in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Somali nationalism, however, cannot be properly understood without a knowledge of the indigenous social organization. This study by a social anthropologist describes the political system of the Northern Somali nomads in their arid ecological setting, where competition for access to water and pasture, especially in the dry season, is acute and leads to frequent and often long-drawn-out feuds. In this warlike society political status depends very largely on numerical strength. Political loyalties based on kinship are organized through a form of Social Contract which distinguishes the pastoral Somali political system from otherwise similar political structures. Today this traditional organization is being challenged in areas where cultivation has recently been adopted, and in towns which are the foci of modern developments. Somali nationalism, drawing much of its strength from the unifying force of Islam, is an important factor. With the continued dedication of the majority of the population to pastoral nomadism, however, traditional clan and contractual loyalties inevitably play an important part in party politics. This analysis has proved to be of interest not only to anthropologists and Africanists, but also to students of Islamic society and of comparative political institutions.

Book Altruism in Cross Cultural Perspective

Download or read book Altruism in Cross Cultural Perspective written by Douglas A. Vakoch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Altruism in Cross-Cultural Perspective provides such a scholarly overview, examining the intersection of culture and such topics as evolutionary accounts of altruism and the importance of altruism in ritual and religion. The past decade has seen a proliferation of research on altruism, made possible in part by significant funding from organizations such as the John Templeton Foundation. While significant research has been conducted on biological, social, and individual dimensions of altruism, there has been no attempt to provide an overview of the ways that altruistic behavior and attitudes vary across cultures. The book addresses the methodological challenges of researching altruism across cultures, as well as the ways that altruism is manifest in difficult circumstances. A particular strength of the book is its attention to multiple disciplinary approaches to understanding altruism, with contributors from fields including psychology, anthropology, sociology, biology, communication, philosophy, religious studies, gender studies, and bioethics.

Book Conceptions of Inquiry

Download or read book Conceptions of Inquiry written by Stuart Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-17 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of significant contributions have been made, both to specific intellectual disciplines and on the broader philosophical front. by researches into the nature of inquiry. The papers in this collection illustrate a number of such areas of debate in mathematics. natural science. social studies and history. allowing an appraisal of their importance in their own context as well as comparisons across disciplinary frontiers. Some extracts are undoubtedly classic - Plato on mathematics. Newton on physics and J.S. Mill on social science. However. most contributions are more contemporary - work by theorists such as Foucault and Hofstadter. and by practitioners such as Bondi and Einstein. Mathematics is considered under a number of headings. from Plato's 'eternal truth' to Hodgkin's 'social practice'. Its relation to the 'real world' is discussed in a number of essays. In the section on natural science various strands of the Popper-Kuhn debate can be followed. including the questions of progress. rationality and the demarcation of science as opposed to 'pseudoscience'. A similar set of problems is presented in the sections on social inquiry. Here the scientific status of sociology, anthropology, history and the like is at issue. Some writers argue that social inquiry is quite distinct from science. whilst others. including Hempel, deny that there is any essential difference between the human and the natural sciences. The final sections are devoted to more general problems. Extracts from Hume, Hirst and Foucault discuss the isolation and definition of forms of knowledge; the prevailing views of the objectivity of science are challenged by Hanson and Kuhn; and the role of values in social inquiry is debated by Weber, Gouldner and Hesse.

Book Temporalising Anthropology

Download or read book Temporalising Anthropology written by Timothy Insoll and published by Africa Magna Verlag. This book was released on 2013 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the results of significant fieldwork completed in the Tong Hills of Northern Ghana, an area currently inhabited by the Talensi ethno-linguistic group. Although made anthropologically renowned by the anthropologist Meyer Fortes, the archaeology and material culture of the Talensi Tong Hills had largely been neglected until the research initiated by the authors. Extensive archaeological surveys and excavations were completed allied with ethnoarchaeological and ethnobotanical research on shrines, sacrifice, and indigenous medicine. The data is presented and described, and a settlement chronology for the region reconstructed. The results of the geological, organic geochemical, petrographic, and archaeometallurgical analysis are provided. The function of shrines and the meaning of 'shrine' as a concept are evaluated, and indigenous medicinal practices, their links with shrines, and their substances, materiality, and archaeological implications assessed with reference to the primary empirical material gathered. Ritual, performance, and its inter-relation with the past and the archaeological record are also considered so as to question the 'timelessness' of previous anthropological presentations. The Tong Hills are also discussed with reference to their place in the wider history and archaeology of the region. This book will be useful to anyone interested in the archaeology and anthropology of African indigenous religions and ritual practices, as well as those interested in West African history, and the relationship between archaeology and anthropology.

Book Cognitive Processes in Stereotyping and Intergroup Behavior

Download or read book Cognitive Processes in Stereotyping and Intergroup Behavior written by David L. Hamilton and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981, this volume brings together contributions by several of the authors whose research had contributed significantly to the recent advances in our understanding of the role of cognitive processes in stereotyping and intergroup behaviour at the time. While each chapter reflects a cognitive approach to its subject matter, a broad range of topics, issues, and contexts is addressed by this collection of authors. In the introductory chapter the authors present an historical overview of psychological research on stereotyping, discussing historical trends in this literature and summarizing the conceptual orientations which had guided research in this area at the time. This chapter not only provides useful background information for the reader but also presents a broader context within which the current cognitively oriented research, on which the remaining chapters focus, can be viewed. Each of the next six chapters reports on integrative program of studies bearing on some aspect of the relationship of cognitive functioning to stereotyping and/or intergroup behaviour.
