Book Terra Ludus

  • Publisher : Springer

Book excerpt: Set in the near future, Terra Ludus follows a group of friends as their lives are turned upside down by the downstream effects of the actions of the protagonist, Daniela Bartoli. Five years after the professional International Women’s Basketball League is unceremoniously dumped by its parent men’s organization, Daniela is working in Los Angeles as a freelance journalist and playing regular weekend pick-up games with her friends Mike, Constantin, Dominic and Simeon. Her relatively simple life changes almost overnight after her vlog, challenging a powerful media corporation to step up and broadcast women’s basketball, goes viral. The publicity sets off a chain reaction that brings the sport back into international prominence and sucks Daniela into a vortex of media and public visibility that leads her to question what is really important. In an imagined context where all professional sport takes place in a single country –something like a permanent Olympic Games – we follow a cast of characters with very different viewpoints on a roller-coaster, year-long, journey as they adjust to the new women’s league. Although fictional, Terra Ludus is grounded in decades of researching, theorizing, teaching and writing about women’s sport and media representation. Terra Ludus can be read entirely for pleasure or used as supplemental reading in courses in sport, media, gender, communication, journalism, sociology, creative writing, performance, physical education and cultural studies.“Toni Bruce turns her keen literary eye on the spectacular failure of sport studies scholars and activists to convince mainstream sports media to increase coverage of women’s sport. Her gripping story turns this narrative on its head, and shows all of us how things could be different. Terra Ludus shows us how to move forward. This is the power of storytelling.” Norman K. Denzin, Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign“Using popular culture pedagogically to think about popular culture and power, Terra Ludus is a valuable tool for critical thought.” Lawrence Grossberg, Ph.D., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill“Terra Ludus is a sine qua non tale about Third Wave Feminism. Set in a future society, it asks: What could happen if dominant ideas about women, sports, sexuality, ethnicity and the media left-over from the Twentieth-Century are challenged head-on by women athletes? Finding out will keep readers reading, students buzzing.” Laurel Richardson, Ph.D., The Ohio State UniversityToni Bruce, Ph.D., is a sport sociologist and media scholar at the Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally the baby is born. From the patient observation of beings and things, the Ludus is born, richly illustrated by the author's work, here it is, Hesse's glasspearl game so many found multiple meanings for it without us ever reaching the expected communion dreamed by the magister. A game that should teach us the links and the reading frame of the universe that brought us life and bears it for us. A game of music and theater, a game that philosophically would offer endless possibilities of creation and expression, discovery and long introspections. A game that could last days long, calling for thought, invention and initiative, around themes proposed by the magister ludi, around the seven notes of a scale, around seven lanterns, which would ally nomads and sedentarys, leaving them to enjoy the foundations of civilization again, so that they are never forgotten. Book LUDUS COVENTRIAE A COLLECTION OF MYSTERIES FORMERLY REPRESENTED AT COVENTRY ON THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI

Download or read book LUDUS COVENTRIAE A COLLECTION OF MYSTERIES FORMERLY REPRESENTED AT COVENTRY ON THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI written by J. O. HALLIWELL PHILLIPPS and published by BEYOND BOOKS HUB. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three complete collections of ancient English mysteries have descended to modern times, or rather are now known to be preserved, which are generally distinguished by the titles of the Chester, the Townley, and the Coventry Mysteries; and, with the exception of a few detached pieces of far inferior importance, we derive nearly all our actual knowledge of the early English drama from these series of plays, which have been long known to every one interested in this class of literary pursuits, as some of the most curious and valuable relics of bygone times; not merely as important records of our early stage, but also as illustrating, in a very interesting manner, the customs, language, and manners of the periods to which they belong. The only one of these series (which is, perhaps, the most important of all), that has yet been printed, is the Townley, which was published by the Surtees Society, with a very interesting and learned preface by Mr. Hunter. The Coventry is contained in the following volume; and the Chester, so ably commented upon by Mr. Markland, a gentleman to whom belongs the distinction of being the first in recent times to direct public attention to these researches, has already been under the consideration of the Council of the Society under whose auspices the present volume is produced...FROM THE BOOKS

Book The Play about the Antichrist Ludus de Antichristo

Download or read book The Play about the Antichrist Ludus de Antichristo written by Kyle A. Thomas and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Play about the Antichrist (Ludus de Antichristo) was composed around 1160 at the imperial Bavarian abbey of Tegernsee, at a critical point in the power-struggle between the papacy and Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. This new translation and commentary reveals this drama to be strikingly representative of the role that theatrical performance played in shaping contemporary politics, diplomacy, and public opinion. It also shows how drama functioned as an integral component of the educational curricula of elite monastic institutions like Tegernsee, where political administrators and diplomats were trained, and how performance served as a common, connective lingua franca among monasteries in twelfth-century Bavaria. In this new translation, Carol Symes provides the first full and faithful rendering of the play’s dynamic language, maintaining the meter, rhyme scheme, and stage directions of the Latin original and restoring the liturgical elements embedded in the text. Kyle A. Thomas, whose fully-staged production tested the theatricality of this translation, provides a new historical and dramaturgical analysis of the play’s rich interpretive and performative possibilities.
