Download or read book Lucy s Legacy written by Dr. Donald Johanson and published by Crown. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Lucy is a 3.2-million-year-old skeleton who has become the spokeswoman for human evolution. She is perhaps the best known and most studied fossil hominid of the twentieth century, the benchmark by which other discoveries of human ancestors are judged.”–From Lucy’s Legacy In his New York Times bestseller, Lucy: The Beginnings of Humankind, renowned paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson told the incredible story of his discovery of a partial female skeleton that revolutionized the study of human origins. Lucy literally changed our understanding of our world and who we come from. Since that dramatic find in 1974, there has been heated debate and–most important–more groundbreaking discoveries that have further transformed our understanding of when and how humans evolved. In Lucy’s Legacy, Johanson takes readers on a fascinating tour of the last three decades of study–the most exciting period of paleoanthropologic investigation thus far. In that time, Johanson and his colleagues have uncovered a total of 363 specimens of Australopithecus afarensis (Lucy’s species, a transitional creature between apes and humans), spanning 400,000 years. As a result, we now have a unique fossil record of one branch of our family tree–that family being humanity–a tree that is believed to date back a staggering 7 million years. Focusing on dramatic new fossil finds and breakthrough advances in DNA research, Johanson provides the latest answers that post-Lucy paleoanthropologists are finding to questions such as: How did Homo sapiens evolve? When and where did our species originate? What separates hominids from the apes? What was the nature of Neandertal and modern human encounters? What mysteries about human evolution remain to be solved? Donald Johanson is a passionate guide on an extraordinary journey from the ancient landscape of Hadar, Ethiopia–where Lucy was unearthed and where many other exciting fossil discoveries have since been made–to a seaside cave in South Africa that once sheltered early members of our own species, and many other significant sites. Thirty-five years after Lucy, Johanson continues to enthusiastically probe the origins of our species and what it means to be human.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucy wants to be a champion race horse like her Mother and Father. To reach this goal, she decides that she must travel to the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York. In preparation for this trip, Lucy decides to study geography. During her geography class, Lucy learns that her travels to Elmont, New York, will take her across Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey. Lucy prepares for the trip both mentally and physically by studying her geography and racing the other colts up and down the fields along Brush Creek. As Lucy journeys to Elmont, New York, she encounters a number of different animals -- an owl, a flock of geese, dolphins, crows, and a covey of quail. Lucy becomes fascinated with the countryside through which she runs, and she decides that in the future she must come back to explore the natural beauty found in these states. Upon reaching the Belmont Stakes, Lucy persuades the race track owner to allow her to run in the place of a sick horse. This break was all Lucy needed to set a race record in winning the Belmont Stakes. After winning this race, Belmont Police inform Lucy that her parents are searching for her. Lucy tells the police that she did not intend to frighten her parents, and she quickly returns home to Tennessee where her victory at the Belmont Stakes is celebrated.

Book I m No Angel

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ellen Tremper
  • Publisher : University of Virginia Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9780813925219
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book I m No Angel written by Ellen Tremper and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why there are so many "dumb blonde" jokes--always about women? Or how Ivanhoe's childhood love, the"flaxen Saxon" Rowena, morphed into Marilyn Monroe? Between that season in 1847 when readers encountered Becky Sharp playing the vengeful Clytemnestra--about to plunge a dagger into Agamemnon--and the sunny moment in 1932 when moviegoers watched Clark Gable plunge Jean Harlow's platinum-tressed head into a rain barrel, the playing field for women and men had leveled considerably. But how did the fairy-tale blonde, that placid, pliant girl, become the "tomato upstair," as Monroe styled herself in The Seven Year Itch? In I'm No Angel: The Blonde in Fiction and Film, Ellen Tremper shows how, at its roots, the image of the blonde was remodeled by women writers in the nineteenth century and actors in the twentieth to keep pace with the changes in real women's lives. As she demonstrates, through these novels and performances, fair hair and its traditional attributes--patience, pliancy, endurance, and innocence--suffered a deliberate alienation, which both reflected and enhanced women's personal and social freedoms essential to the evolution of modernity. From fiction to film, the active, desiring, and sometimes difficult women who disobeyed, manipulated, and thwarted their fellow characters mimicked and furthered women's growing power in the world. The author concludes with an overview of the various roles of the blonde in film from the 1960s to the present and speculates about the possible end of blond dominance. An engaging and lively read, I'm No Angel will appeal to a general audience interested in literary and cinematic representations of the blonde, as well as to scholars in Victorian, women's, and film studies.

Book Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd

Download or read book Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd written by Christine M. Totten and published by Eliot Werner Publications. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What more could there be to know about FDR, given how exhaustively his life has been written about? As it happens, there is more and that focuses on Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd, the queen of her Washington social circle, later FDR's friend and love-and Eleanor's rival, as the title of Christine Totten's work points out. In Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd: Eleanor's Rival, FDR's Other Love, Totten presents a carefully structured case for a deep and lasting but chaste love between Lucy and FDR, against the prevailing view that they were clandestine lovers. Totten's research into the personal memories of the Rutherfurd family and the public holdings of the FDR Library establishes a new rich understanding of Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd--her early life, her education, and her role in the social and political scene in Washington. This work gives Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd her due, as a woman in her own right as well as FDR's valued soul mate and friend.
