Download or read book Rocking Horse Road written by Carl Nixon and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much more than a murder mystery, this powerful novel is about coming of age and loss of innocence. The body of a teenage girl is found on the beach in the days leading up to Christmas, 1980. It’s an event that makes a huge impact on all those who live along Rocking Horse Road, which runs through the Spit, a long ‘finger of bone-dry sand’ between the ocean and the estuary. It’s an event that for one hot summer brings together a group of fifteen-year-old boys and then keeps them linked for the rest of their lives. Evolving from Nixon’s celebrated short story, this compelling novel shows New Zealand turning upon itself during the 1981 Springbok Tour. It examines how early events can influence the rest of our lives, and probes ideas of community, collective memory and story-telling.

Download or read book Lucky And Lucy written by RICHARD KENNEDY and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This isn't just another love story. Generically, perhaps, but otherwise not. It is indeed a story about love, falling in love, being in love, experiencing love in all of its manifold, unpredictable aspects with its roller coaster emotions, its exhilarating highs, its heartbreaking lows and its gut-wrenching uncertainties. But the difference and the reason why I believe the reader will kvell over this tale and find it all but un-put-down-able is because this is a story about mature love, venerated love- old love, if you will, to put it plainly....In short, how hope springs eternal, and how we all are truly as young as we think we are..."This is a great book. For anyone who wants to believe there is still magic in the world and that love can happen at any age, this is a must read." Vikki Walker, USA, July, 2016

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ORIGIN OF THE NAME BARTHOLOMEW. Bartholomew is the English form of the Syriac name of the apostle Bartholmai, which is derived from Bar, the Syriac term, as Ben is the Hebrew, for son; see Psalms ii, 12, translated "Kim the Son;" and Tholmai or Talmai (the same in Hebrew) is often found in the Old Testament, see Numbers xiii, 22; Joshua xv, 14; 2 Samuel iii, 3 and Chronicles xiii, 37, as Talmai. Its signification is "furrowed" from a Hebrew root meaning "to furrow" or "cut." The process by which Bartholmai or Bartalmai in Hebrew becomes Bartholomew in English, is through the regular Greek and Latin forms Bartholonmeos and Bartholommus, the second o being an intercalation, thence possibly through the French. The Latin ae being treated as a simple ē, as in all the other Romance languages.
