Gennaro! I am thy mother! GENNARO. (Trembling and letting the knife fall.) My mother! Ah! you mock me! DONNA LUCREZIA. Thy mother! and thou hast slain me! GENNARO. Oh, no l it is not so! it cannot be! You my mother! In pity's name, tell me that you are not my mother! DONNA LUCREZIA. (Taking from her breast a bundle of letters, soaked with blood.) There were letters upon my heart. These are they. Take them, Gennaro. Perchance my blood has not made them illegible. Dost recognize the writing? GENNARO. 1 (Glancing at the letters.) My etters! DONNA LUCREZIA. The dagger pierced them. They made a more penetrable cuirass than thou didst think, Gennaro. GENNARO. Ah yes! O Heaven! you are indeed my mother! I did not call to mind the incest. God in heaven! Why did you not tell me long ago? DONNA LUCREZIA. I was ashamed. Thy dagger's point alone, my child, could make me tell thee all. My secret gushed out from my heart with my blood. Shall I confess it? it was sweet to me tovbe beloved by thee in one aspect, while thou didst loathe me in another. Thy mother thou didst lbve, Gennaro; wouldst thou have loved Lucrezia Borgia? GENNARO. You, my mother! DONNA LUCREZIA. And then there was Valentinois--Valentinois, who slew thy father! My secret once divulged, even to thine ca alone, thou wouldst not have lived a day. Alas! even in the obscure station where I placed thee, at times I fancied that the tiger was prowling round thee, and I trembled, unhappy mother that I am, lest he should get scent of thee. GENNARO. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Victor Hugo Dramas: Lucrezia Borgia; Mary Tudor; Angelo, Tyrant of Padua He trusts that he may be forgiven for saying nothing more on the purely aesthetic part of his work. There is an altogether different line of thought, no less lofty in his opinion, which he would be glad to have the leisure to suggest and examine into apropos of this play of Luereee Borgia. In his view many social questions are involved in literary questions, and every work in the field of letters is a fact to be considered. That is the subject upon which he would gladly dilate if time and space were not lacking. It cannot be repeated too frequently that the stage in our day is of immense importance, and its importance tends to keep pace with the advance of civilization itself. The stage is a platform. The stage is a pulpit. The stage speaks loud and strong. When Corneille says. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Duchess of Padua Esprios Classics

Download or read book The Duchess of Padua Esprios Classics written by Oscar Wilde and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2022-06-05 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Duchess of Padua is a play by Oscar Wilde. It is a five-act tragedy set in Padua and written in blank verse. It was written for the actress Mary Anderson in early 1883 while in Paris. After she turned it down, it was abandoned until its first performance at the Broadway Theatre in New York City under the title Guido Ferranti on 26 January 1891, where it ran for three weeks. It has been rarely revived or studied. Wilde first mentioned the possibility of writing a five-act blank verse tragedy in the Biograph in 1880, originally to be entitled The Duchess of Florence. Wilde was strongly influenced by Lucrezia Borgia (1833) and Angelo, Tyrant of Padua (1835), two Italian-set historical plays by Victor Hugo.

Book The Militant Hackwriter

Book excerpt: While Louis XVIII, Charles X, and Louis Philippe ruled in France, a vast majority of politically unenfranchised Frenchmen were developing their own subculture. Only recently literate, they fashioned their own literature. It consisted of two important genres: the popular novel and the melodrama. As we trace these genres from the turn of the nineteenth century until that moment of February 25, 1848, when the Second Republic was declared, we are also led to a detailed scrutiny of the injustices which the immense majority of the French suffered and of the political causes they espoused. The succession of heroes and villains in their literature mirrored accurately the fears and hopes they felt.
