Dunkle le prophète irascible, qui sous l'oeil goguenard de Lucky Luke ne cesse de prédire aux autres bagnards l'imminence du châtiment et la nécessité du repentir va trouver, dans les quatre frères, un auditoire très intéressé dès qu'il parle de montrer la voie du salut ou d'en fournir les clés. Ne parlons pas de Rantanplan, littéralement subjugué par le beau parleur. Le problème c'est que les Dalton ne font pas bien la différence entre l'allégorie et la parabole, surtout Averell. Devenu le disciple préféré du prophète (et le seul si on excepte Rantanplan) il va trouver l'audace de se révolter contre Joe en qui il découvre tout à coup l'incarnation de Satan. Et quand les Dalton parviennent à s'évader c'est pour tomber de Charybde en Scylla car la charmante ville de Paradise Gulch où ils échouent est tenue par une communauté qui prône la non-violence, condamne l'alcool et même l'argent. Une ville sans banque et sans saloon ! Les Dalton auront fort à faire pour y remédier et prêcher à leur tour le retour aux bonnes vieilles valeurs de l'Ouest. Heureusement, Lucky Luke est là pour remettre les pendules à l'heure. Ce nouvel album est surtout l'occasion d'une cascade de gags hilarants imaginés par un nouveau scénariste, Patrick Nordmann, journaliste et auteur satirique, producteur à la Radio suisse romande. Dunkle, l'oiseau de malheur, figurera désormais en bonne place dans la pittoresque galerie de portraits des affreux de l'Ouest, croque-morts, escrocs et vautours en tout genre. Lucky Luke est, avec Astérix et Tintin, le plus célèbre personnage de l'histoire de la BD : cette série, accessible à tous, est devenu un mythe grâce à Morris et Goscinny. Ce personnage a fait l'essentiel de sa formidable carrière dans les pages de SPIROU, PILOTE et LE JOURNAL DE LUCKY LUKE. Une exploitation merchandising et audiovisuelle (dont aux États-Unis) a permis d'introduire Lucky Luke auprès d'une très large couche de la population et auprès de plusieurs générations de lecteurs. A noter qu'après la disparition de Goscinny, plusieurs scénaristes ont travaillé sur la série : Vicq, De Groot, Fauche et Léturgie, Lodewijk, Lo Hartog Van Banda et Vidal.
