Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The architectural principle of the cellular compartment floor plan is as simple as it is economical, yet it allows for spatial and combinable freedom that can be interpreted in ever-new and ever-different ways. The resulting self-contained units or spatial sequences are suited for residential purposes as much as for office buildings, museums, or schools, with the floor plans providing highly dynamic and surprising traffic patterns and views. The cellular compartment floor plan is the generating principle in many buildings, projects, and competition entries by the renowned Basel-based Luca Selva Architects, who have been continually developing this typology in their practice, modifying it and adapting it for new applications in different projects. The cellular compartment floor plan is therefore the ideal focus of this new book on the work of the prolific firm. Numerous plans and photographs are supplemented with a theoretical essay by Christoph Wieser and a conversation between Luca Selva and Patrick Gmür. Shedding light for the first time on this surprisingly sparsely researched topic, this comprehensive book will have significance for the discourse reaching well beyond the exemplary designs by Luca Selva Architects.

Book Luca Selva Architects

Download or read book Luca Selva Architects written by Christoph Wieser and published by Park Publishing (WI). This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luca Selva, born 1962, graduated in architecture from ETH Zurich, where he also worked as a research and teaching assistant before establishing his own studio in Basel in 1991. Single family houses have been among Selva s chief interests from the beginning as means for research on questions of space, typology, design, and architectural phenomenology in general. Specific topics and problems are investigated for the first time with this type of building, and solutions found are picked-up again and developed further in other projects of varied kind and dimension. Since 1991 Luca Selva Architects have realized a range of highly interesting projects, including semi-detached double-family homes, a house for an art collector, a house with artist s studio, or a multi-generation home. The new book presents comprehensively and compares a large selection of these buildings. They are documented with images, floor and site plans, sections, and elevations. The essays look at the single family home as an architectural task and discuss questions of design in the context of historical and contemporary positions. "

Book Building Globalization

Download or read book Building Globalization written by Xuefei Ren and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the years 2004 to 2008, Beijing and Shanghai witnessed the construction of an extraordinary number of new buildings, many of which were designed by architectural firms overseas. Combining ethnographic fieldwork, historical research, and network analysis, Building Globalization closely scrutinizes the growing phenomenon of transnational architecture and its profound effect on the development of urban space. Roaming from construction sites in Shanghai to architects’ offices in Paris, Xuefei Ren interviews hundreds of architects, developers, politicians, residents, and activists to explore this issue. She finds that in the rapidly transforming cities of modern China, iconic designs from prestigious international architects help private developers to distinguish their projects, government officials to advance their careers, and the Chinese state to announce the arrival of modern China on the world stage. China leads the way in the globalization of architecture, a process whose ramifications can be felt from Beijing to Dubai to Basel. Connecting the dots between real estate speculation, megaproject construction, residential displacement, historical preservation, housing rights, and urban activism, Building Globalization reveals the contradictions and consequences of this new, global urban frontier.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Inside written by Sibylle Kramer and published by Braun Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary interior design is largely defined by the creation of diverse spaces that can be experienced with all of the senses. One aspect in this regard is the original use of materials. This also serves as the conceptual base of the two complementary volumes Inside that are part of the series Architecture in Focus. The two books show how varied, and sometimes quite unusual, the range of applications and combination is, done by wellknown and (still) unknown architects, designers and artists. Inside can be used as a real reference guide and a source of ideas: because materiality is the guiding principle of this book, every picture has captions with a detailed listing of the applied materials and design elements. While the sixty projects of this title are all made from the softer, diaphanous materials colour, fabric, glass and light the complementary volume Inside. Interiors of Concrete Stone Wood is devoted to the more classical and durable materials.

Book excerpt: Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, has one of the most important buildings of the 20th century: its parliamentary building by Louis I. Kahn constructed between 1961 and 1982. Little is known, however, about the local architecture scene that has emerged since then. Yet contemporary architecture in Bangladesh exhibits a strong formal idiom that has its roots in tradition and is combined with an innovative handling of local resources such as bamboo and brick.00Exhibition: S AM Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum, Basel, Switzerland (02.12.2017 - 06.05.2018).

Book excerpt: As one of the worlds megacities, São Paulo has for decades seen an investment in architectural infrastructures that attempt to mitigate its open space shortages as well as fulfill the constant need for recreational, cultural, and sports programs. These buildings and open spaces - which can be public, semi-public, or privately-owned - arguably attempt to create inclusive places for urban society. This exhibition catalogue presents projects at different scales, focusing on their programmatic characteristics rather than the formal qualities usually emphasized in scholarship on Brazilian architecture. While many cities around the world are still chasing the so-called "Bilbao Effect" - the creation of a monofunctional "signature" architectural work by a famous architect that can attract tourism - this exhibition catalogue advocates for architectural infrastructure that adds programs of different natures, and that are aimed at social sustainability for local citizens. This aspect of urban growth in São Paulo - quite a vertical and densely-populated city; a city of great resources and also tremendous poverty; a city with high crime rates; a city with severe traffic issues; a city with public-health problems - illustrates how architecture and infrastructure can contribute to a city's urban development in multiple ways.
