Book Lubricant Metallurgy Interaction Effects on Turbine Engine Lubricant Load Rating

Download or read book Lubricant Metallurgy Interaction Effects on Turbine Engine Lubricant Load Rating written by P. M. Ku and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation has as its objective the development of an improved methodology for aircraft power spur gear design, with primary emphasis on gear-tooth scuffing (scoring) and secondary emphasis on gear-tooth pitting (surface fatigue). Toward this end, mathematical models are proposed for scuffing and pitting, as well as for another relevant but less important failure mode, rubbing wear. Basic data for the scuffing and pitting models were derived from sliding-rolling disk tests using the AFAPL disk tester. Gear scuffing and pitting tests were also performed, using two WADD gear machines, to evaluate the validity of the two models. The scuffing model was found to yield scuff-limited gear power-transmitting capacities to about five percent of the actual. However, the several correlating factors employed in the model require independent confirmation and rationalization. The pitting model was found to yield gear pitting lives about ten times the actual, due principally to the weak statistical base of the quantitative data available and also a lack of basic understanding of the pitting process in gears. The wear model, which is not within the scope of this investigation, was not tested. The investigation has revealed many areas where basic understanding or quantitative data are still inadequate. Recommendations for additional research are presented. (Author).

Book Effect of Engine Operating Environments on Lubricant Load Carrying Capacity of High Gear Load Oils

Download or read book Effect of Engine Operating Environments on Lubricant Load Carrying Capacity of High Gear Load Oils written by P. J. Mangione and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Load carrying capacity evaluations were made on current and advanced esterbased synthetic lubricants which were exposed to the operating environments of gas turbine engines. The program also investigated the cause/effect of changes in load carrying capacity as related to additive depletion and possible additive/metal interaction through an adsorption or reactive process. The results indicated that both current oils and advanced high gear load oils experienced significant degradation in load carrying capacity with time in both engine and simulated engine bearing compartment environments. The percentage loss in load carrying capacity was greater with the high gear load oils, but neither oil was significantly influenced by the engine type sampled. However, the absolute rating of the degraded XAS-2354 oil remained above the degraded MIL-L-23699 oil absolute ratings. The lower load carrying capacity of used oils, attributed to additive depletion, appeared to be recoverable with new oil additions of a high gear load oil. However, this capability would not be realized in normal operation of an engine lubrication system. An effective pre-conditioning treatment of gear tooth surfaces with a high gear load oil was demonstrated and recommended for use in the 'run-in' of new or overhauled helicopter gearboxes for improved resistance to surface damage and extended service life. Book Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication

Download or read book Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication written by Bernard J. Hamrock and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-03-15 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specifically focusing on fluid film, hydrodynamic, and elastohydrodynamic lubrication, this edition studies the most important principles of fluid film lubrication for the correct design of bearings, gears, and rolling operations, and for the prevention of friction and wear in engineering designs. It explains various theories, procedures, and equations for improved solutions to machining challenges. Providing more than 1120 display equations and an introductory section in each chapter, Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication, Second Edition facilitates the analysis of any machine element that uses fluid film lubrication and strengthens understanding of critical design concepts.

Book A Study of Selected Parameters Influencing Lubricant Load Carrying Capacity Determination

Download or read book A Study of Selected Parameters Influencing Lubricant Load Carrying Capacity Determination written by Everett A. Lake and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Method of Test for Load-Carrying Capacity of Fluid Gear Lubricants, American Society for Testing and Materials Designation D1947, controls the procedure, test rigs, test items, and reporting methods with respect to evaluating lubricant gear load capacity. Prior to evaluation of U.S. gas turbine engine lubricants, the rigs and associated devices are performance checked with a standard lubricant, Reference Oil C. Observations of these calibration data have shown the mean gear load capacity to be nonuniform. Further, the data is believed to be excessively scattered. As a result, this program was undertaken to determine the effect of test gears manufactured at two different points in time, the type of lubricant, and the test rig configuration upon gear load capacity. Statistical analysis of program data reveals the test gears and the type of lubricant to be, with 95% confidence, the sources of variation.

Book Effects of Wear Metal on Lubricant Deposition

Download or read book Effects of Wear Metal on Lubricant Deposition written by John C. Tyler and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of wear metal on deposit forming characteristics of turbine engine lubricants were investigated, employing hot-wall deposition test rigs. The hot-wall section of the rigs was redesigned, fabricated and assembled for testing. A recently designed wear-metal generator was employed. Eight MIL-L-7808 or MIL-L-7808-type lubricants were evaluated under five different test conditions. Then a brief statistical analysis was performed to determine the micronic filtration tests to be performed in a mitigation of wear-metal effects phase of the effort. Also, the effects on both kinematic viscosity and neutralization number of the test lubricants were determined. A direct calculation of wear-metal generation was provided by weight-loss measurements of the wear coupons mounted below the lubricant level in the sump. Also, the concentration of wear metals in samples of the test lubricants taken during testing was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence technique was employed to determine trace elements in hot-wall deposit scrapings. The preliminary statistical analysis for all eight lubricants consisted of a one-way analysis of variance, then an analysis of covariance using an adjustment for wear, and finally an unadjusted analysis of variance.
