Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of ongoing religious conflicts and unending culture wars, what are we to make of liberalism's promise that it alone can arbitrate between church and state? In this wide-ranging study, John Perry examines the roots of our thinking on religion and politics, placing the early-modern founders of liberalism in conversation with today's theologians and political philosophers. From the story of Antigone to debates about homosexuality and bans on religious attire, it is clear that liberalism's promise to solve all theo-political conflict is a false hope. The philosophy connecting John Locke to John Rawls seeks a world free of tragic dilemmas, where there can be no Antigones. Perry rejects this as an illusion. Disputes like the culture wars cannot be adequately comprehended as border encroachments presided over by an impartial judge. Instead, theo-political conflict must be considered a contest of loyalties within each citizen and believer. Drawing on critics of Rawls ranging from Michael Sandel to Stanley Hauerwas, Perry identifies what he calls a 'turn to loyalty' by those who recognize the inadequacy of our usual thinking on the public place of religion. The Pretenses of Loyalty offers groundbreaking analysis of the overlooked early work of Locke, where liberalism's founder himself opposed toleration. Perry discovers that Locke made a turn to loyalty analogous to that of today's communitarian critics. Liberal toleration is thus more sophisticated, more theologically subtle, and ultimately more problematic than has been supposed. It demands not only governmental neutrality (as Rawls believed) but also a reworked political theology. Yet this must remain under suspicion for Christians because it places religion in the service of the state. Perry concludes by suggesting where we might turn next, looking beyond our usual boundaries to possibilities obscured by the liberalism we have inherited.

Add a fear of loss and the tough guy will avoid falling in love at all cost. That’s where Loukas Mikos finds himself. After meeting Loukas on one of the luxury family vacations Natalie had started crushing on him almost immediately. She’d been the nanny of his cousin’s daughter but she’d spent time enough with Loukas to know she’d fall completely in love with him if he gave her more than a friendly smile. And here they both are on a Mikos cruise ship to Greece for Loukas’s sister’s wedding. The high society wedding is a big deal in the Mikos family and the mother of the bride is on high alert. Everything must be perfect. Loukas has been set up with a date he doesn’t want and he’s balking. When Natalie seems to be a good diversion from the set up, Loukas takes advantage of the opportunity. As a temporary stand in, Natalie has a great time, though caution screamed in the back of her mind. She reminds herself constantly that this isn’t real, but she still feels herself falling for the brash billionaire cruise line owner. Who wouldn’t? But once they’re past the wedding, there’s no more reason to spend time together. Natalie is sure her chance was lost and she’s tempering her emotions to go back to real life when the special vacation was over. Loukas feels lost but can't quite give in to the idea of being tied down. Will the family scandal that's looming just on the horizon pull these two together or will their connection be lost forever?

Book excerpt: The formula 'for the life of' is often found in votive inscriptions, cast in Aramaic and other languages, which originate from the Syrian-Mesopotamian desert and adjacent areas and which roughly date from the first three centuries A.D. They belong to objects like statues and altars that usually were erected in temples and other structures with a ritual or sacred function. The inscriptions establish a relationship between the dedicator and one or more beneficiaries, those persons for whose life the dedication was made. Since the social context evidently bears on both the meaning of the inscriptions as well as the status of the dedications, this volume deals with the nature of the relationships and the socio-religious function the dedications perform.
