Book Low volume and Slow burning Vegetation for Planting on Clearings in California Chaparral

Download or read book Low volume and Slow burning Vegetation for Planting on Clearings in California Chaparral written by Eamor C. Nord and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vegetation that is low-growing and either low in volume, slow bwning, or both, is needed for reduction of fire hazard on fuelbreaks and other brush-cleared areas in California. Of over 50 shrub species and many grass species that were test planted, about 20 shrubs and an equal number of grasses were chosen for plot and field trials. Creeping sage, a few saltbushes. and a few grasses-mostly perennials-are adapted within the wide range of chaparral site conditions, and were successfully established by direct seedings as well as by other cultural methods on these sites. Shrub test results are tabulated and characteristics of each of the more promising species are described. With attention to usefulness for planting; techniques for collecting or treating seed to improve gennination and for propagating plants; and methods for establishing these plants on wildland sites.

Book Radiation Effects on Moisture in Ponderosa Pine Litter

Download or read book Radiation Effects on Moisture in Ponderosa Pine Litter written by Arthur W. Magill and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-stage shelterwood cutting, at 12 trees per acre, with site preparation, enhanced seedfall, regeneration, and residual growth at the Challenge Experimental Forest, north central California. Shelterwood trees produced 9.2 times more seed than trees in the control. Ponderosa pine regeneration numbered about 3700 seedlings per acre (9139 per ha) and tolerant conifers 600 seedlings (1482 per ha) after 5 years. Hardwood seedlings and sprouts also were abundant. Basal area growth rates for all species in nearly all diameter classes were greater in the shelterwood than in the control. The shelterwood cutting method is recommended for use in young-growth, mixed-conifer stands.

Book Valuing Chaparral

Download or read book Valuing Chaparral written by Emma C. Underwood and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaparral shrubland ecosystems are an iconic feature of the California landscape, and a highly biodiverse yet highly flammable backdrop to some of the fastest growing urban areas in the United States. Chaparral-type ecosystems are a common element of all of the world’s Mediterranean-type climate regions – of which California is one – yet there is little public appreciation of the intrinsic value and the ecosystem services that these landscapes provide. Valuing Chaparral is a compendium of contributions from experts in chaparral ecology and management, with a focus on the human relationship with chaparral ecosystems. Chapters cover a wide variety of subjects, ranging from biodiversity to ecosystem services like water provision, erosion control, carbon sequestration and recreation; from the history of human interactions with chaparral to current education and conservation efforts; and from chaparral restoration and management to scenarios of the future under changing climate, land use, and human population. Valuing Chaparral will be of interest to resource managers, the research community, policy makers, and the public who live and work in the chaparral dominated landscapes of California and other Mediterranean-type climate regions.

Book Safer Gardens

Download or read book Safer Gardens written by Lesley Corbett and published by Australian Scholarly Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Destructive bushfires are increasing in frequency and intensity around the world. For people living in fire prone areas there are no reliable guides about which plants have low flammability and which are frighteningly flammable. Safer Gardens is that guide, with over 500 plants assessed, based on fire research from around the world. Readers can look up a plant in the Plant Flammability Table to get an idea of its flammability then turn to the A–Z for more detailed information. The book contains advice about ways to create a more firesafe garden, including the need to carefully manage the use of mulch and hedges. This is citizen science, written by a gardener for other gardeners. Complex and potentially confusing science is made comprehensible and usable, to help you make your garden and hence your house safer.
