Book Rhythms of Change in Rocky Mountain National Park

Download or read book Rhythms of Change in Rocky Mountain National Park written by Ellen Wohl and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To contemplate an alpine lake or a ribbon of white water twisting down the face of the Rocky Mountains is to appreciate the majesty of this block of bedrock thrust up from Earth's interior, weathering eons of nature's assaults. To learn what humans, in our brief lifespan, have done here is to acquire a sobering sense of our place in the natural world. Ellen Wohl's account of a year in the life of Rocky Mountain National Park reflects a lifelong interest in these rhythms and disruptions. Informed by a deep and intimate understanding of the landscape, her Rocky Mountain journal is a lyrical distillation of experience and knowledge that shows us the century-old national park as a microcosm of the natural world in the thrall of time and humanity. Conducting readers through the park's seasons, Wohl describes the processes that unfold over the ages as continents drift and mountain ranges rise, as glaciers carve the land and profound changes in the atmosphere alter the environment. Working on the landscape in a humbler way are beavers and elk, beetles and, not so humbly, humans, who tinker with natural rhythms in ways big and small, as obvious as logging, road building, and feedlot run-off, and as subtle in the short run as climate change. Along the way, we observe the effects of nature's more violent moments: flash floods that wash out roads and inflict damage downstream, high winds that flatten whole hillsides in minutes, wildfires that strip the woods in an instant or smolder all winter long. A work of quiet power, Rhythms of Change in Rocky Mountain National Park traces Wohl's year-long journey, deftly guiding us through the changing seasons of one of America's most awe-inspiring natural places in all its curiosity and wonder—and in its exposure to the larger forces inexorably altering the natural world.

Book Historic Range of Variability for Upland Vegetation in the Bighorn National Forest Wyoming

Download or read book Historic Range of Variability for Upland Vegetation in the Bighorn National Forest Wyoming written by Carolyn B. Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approach for synthesizing the results of ecological research pertinent to land management is the analysis of the historic range of variability (HRV) for key ecosystem variables that are affected by management activities. This report provides an HRV analysis for the upland vegetation of the Bighorn National Forest in northcentral Wyoming. The variables include live tree density, dead tree (snag) density, canopy cover, abundance of coarse woody debris, species diversity, fire return intervals, the abundance of various diseases, the proportion of the landscape in different land cover types, and the degree of patchiness in the landscape. The variables were examined at the stand and landscape scales, using information available in the literature and USFS databases. High-elevation landscapes were considered separately from low-elevation landscapes. Much of the report pertains to forests dominated by lodge-pole pine, subalpine fir, and Engelmann spruce at high elevations, and by ponderosa pine, aspen, and Douglas-fir at lower elevations. We defined the HRV reference period for the BNF as approximately 1600 to 1890.

Download or read book Development Issues In Marginal Regions written by R.B. Singh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid population growth, demand for increased food resources and other political, economic and social stresses have all contributed to building up pressure fordevelopment of marginal regions in both developed and developing countries.Ecological issues are also adding up to and increasing marginalization of regionsand social groups due to the pressure on natural resources. Broadly speakingmarginal regions are perceived in concepts of centre-periphery (fringes) and boundariesand frontiers. In developing countries marginal regicns are the combinedeffects of ecological, economic and social factors. For understanding the abovecomplex issues, the Study Group on Development Issues in Marginal Regionswas established in August 1992 at the Washington International GeographicalCongress.
