Book Mountain agriculture Opportunities for harnessing Zero Hunger in Asia

Download or read book Mountain agriculture Opportunities for harnessing Zero Hunger in Asia written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-08-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain food security and nutrition are core issues that can contribute positively to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals but paradoxically are often ignored in Zero Hunger and poverty reduction-related agenda. Under the overall leadership of José Graziano da Silva, the Former Director-General of FAO, sustainable mountain agriculture development is set as a priority in Asia and the Pacific, to effectively address this issue and assist Member Countries in tackling food insecurity and malnutrition in mountain regions. This comprehensive publication is the first of its kind that focuses on the multidimensional status, challenges, opportunities and solutions of sustainable mountain agriculture development for Zero Hunger in Asia. This publication is building on the ‘International Workshop and Regional Expert Consultation on Mountain Agriculture Development and Food Security and Nutrition Governance’, held by FAO RAP and UIR in November 2018 Beijing, in collaboration with partners from national governments, national agriculture institutes, universities, international organizations and international research institutes. The publication provides analysis with evidence on how mountain agriculture could contribute to satisfying all four dimensions of food security, to transform food systems to be nutrition-sensitive, climate-resilient, economically-viable and locally adaptable. From this food system perspective, the priority should be given to focus on specialty mountain product identification (e.g. Future Smart Food), production, processing, marketing and consumption, which would effectively expose the potential of mountain agriculture to contribute to Zero Hunger and poverty reduction. In addition, eight Asian country case studies not only identify context-specific challenges within biophysical-technical, policy, socio-economic and institutional dimensions.

Book Women Land and Power in Asia

Download or read book Women Land and Power in Asia written by Govind Kelkar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the world women constitute an integral part of the agricultural sector. This volume is based on feminist responses to farming women’s struggle for economic rights and social justice in Asia, and seeks to provide a greater understanding of the development consequences of women’s marginal, limited ownership rights to land and other productive assets. Using comprehensive analyses, quantitative and qualitative data, and case studies from India, China, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and other countries of the Asia-Pacific region, this volume brings together scholars and activists engaged with women’s unmediated entitlement to land and productive assets. While generally taking a position in favour of asset redistribution, the volume addresses two major issues: first, the conflict between legal measures and socio-cultural norms, in a context where laws that seek to secure gender equality and women’s economic empowerment are often overruled by norms that favour men; and second, how changes in the global economy in relation to traditional farming practices have adversely impacted women’s rights, especially in regions where they previously enjoyed more customary rights in asset control and management. The book draws attention to issues of economic security, gender equitable access to resources and asset-building, human rights and law, land-based livelihoods, caste and ethnic diversity, and voices in the women’s movements. This book will be useful to policy makers, civil society organisations, researchers and students of gender and women’s studies, development studies, sociology, economics and agriculture.

This book was released on 2023-12-24 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World agriculture needs sustainability to meet the ever-increasing world population food requirements and supply the necessary raw material to the global industry. Asia, as a region, has a more significant part of the world population resides in the majority of developing countries. Agriculture can play a significant role more sustainably by the adoption of conservative agriculture practices (CAPs). CAPs are set of knowledge-based, and local specific agriculture practices aim to reduce the environmental impact of agriculture, restore the land fertility, and improves the farmers' income. With the low adoption of CAPs and the higher environmental impact of agriculture, CAPs are the only viable option that sustainable agriculture plays a critical role in feeding the world population and supplies the raw material to the industry. However, CAPs are a balanced approach in contrast to intensive or organic farming practices. The book approaches the CAPs by discussing the impact of agriculture on the environment, introducing the CAPs, impact of CAPs on the environment and farmers' income, role of technology on CAPs adoption, factors associated with the non-adoption of CAPs and prospects for the CAPs adoption. Current CAPs adoption factors reported from the literature with Asian context, as well as the associated factors for the non-adoption. The book not only introduces the audience with CAPs but also with its reported impact on the environment, farm, and farmers. The drawback of the current intensive farming practices reported to aware of the audience about how food security achieved at the cost of food safety and undermining the future food security for the growing world population. Sustainable agriculture is also crucial for the industrial development of the globe. Moreover, the factors that contribute to the non-adoption of CAPs also promptly discussed. Book Food Security and the Modernisation Pathway in China

Download or read book Food Security and the Modernisation Pathway in China written by Marie-Hélène Schwoob and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at providing students, experts and practitioners with a detailed overview of agricultural and food security issues in China, analyzed through the lenses of a multidisciplinary approach that enables to fully grasp the current socio-political challenges and lock-ins of agricultural transformation towards more sustainable practices. Confronted to a running decrease and degradation of its resources and rapidly evolving food habits, China became a net importer of food in 2004, and its agricultural balance has since become heavier every day. Beyond providing a comprehensive overview of these stakes, this book also presents consistent and original first hand research material, collected by the author during months of fieldwork in China, in the countryside and from various economic and political circles. Conclusions drawn from this often difficult to access) fieldwork shed light on the whole galaxy of public and private stakeholders taking part in agricultural modernization in China, on their interests and on the patterns of power that underlie the development and implementation of agricultural policies.
