Download or read book Loving You Thinking of You Don t Forget to Pray written by Jacqueline L. Jackson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Jacqueline Jackson, wife of Jesse Jackson, role model, and civil rights veteran, comes an inspiring gift of love to a child in his darkest hour—and a lesson to everyone who has been touched by the scourge of mass incarceration. Jacqueline Jackson promised her son, Congressman Jesse L. Jackson, Jr., that she would write him every day during his incarceration in prison while he served his thirty-month sentence. This book is an inspiring and moving selection of the letters she wrote him. Together, they comprise a powerful act of love—nurturing and ministering to her son's heart, health, and mind and maintaining his essential connection with home. Frank, anecdotal, imbued with faith, and sometimes humorous, they offer intimate details from the family’s daily life, along with news of friends and the community and glimpses of such figures as Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela, and Mayor Marion Barry. They also touch eloquently on issues of social justice, politics, and history, as when Mrs. Jackson recalls growing up in Jim Crow Florida, and they reflect the qualities, instilled by her own mother, that made her a role model for much of her life. Ultimately, these letters offer a blueprint for why we have to support our families not just as they elevate but when they fall. This collection is Mrs. Jackson's contribution to healing during a time when our prisons are full and our communities are suffering. She provides the road map for ensuring that the individuals serving sentences understand that prison is where they are, not who they are and for helping them sustain the courage to keep hope alive.
Download or read book A Praying Life written by Paul E. Miller and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2017-04-05 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 300,000 copies sold "This book will be like having the breath of God at your back. Let it lift you to new hope." --Dan B. Allender, PhD, author of Bold Love This new edition includes an expanded chapter on using the practical "prayer cards"--a hallmark of the teaching found in A Praying Life--and a chapter on the need and use of prayers of lament. Prayer is so hard that unless circumstances demand it--an illness, or saying grace at a meal--most of us simply do not pray. We prize accomplishments and productivity over time in prayer. Even Christians experience this prayerlessness--a kind of practical unbelief that leaves us marked by fear, anxiety, joylessness, and spiritual lethargy. Prayer is all about relationship. Based on the popular seminar by the same name, A Praying Life has discipled thousands of Christians to a vibrant prayer life full of joy and power. When Jesus describes the intimacy He seeks with us, He talks about joining us for dinner (Revelation 3:20). A Praying Life feels like having dinner with good friends. It is the way we experience and connect to God. In A Praying Life, author Paul Miller lays out a pattern for living in relationship with God and includes helpful habits and approaches to prayer that enable us to return to a childlike faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let me offer an early disclaimer. I know exactly who the Founders were. I know exactly the crimes against humanity that they were responsible for and those they inherited and were not responsible for. I do not spend time extolling the virtues of Mr. Jefferson, Mr. Adams, Mr. Franklin, and Mr. Madison. Nothing in this work or in my experiment (my life’s work) can change the fact or alter the history of the debasement of humanity that preceded the Declaration of Independence (1776), the Constitution (1787), and the Bill of Rights (1791) they were a part of and the obvious fact that the major accomplishment of the Founders’ theories about self-government did not apply to African Americans and Native Americans, women, and specifically Black women in their thinking. Still, there exists in their theological imagination infinite hope for their experiment. This work seeks to identify the evidence that shows and suggests that some of them were aware of a grand architectural experiment and design for the nation and its future. Every cracked, broken, and imperfect vessel can be used to bring forward hope. I am a personal witness to this fact of human existence.
Download or read book Family Communication and Cultural Transformation written by Rhunette C. Diggs and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on their past work in race and family communication, Rhunette C. Diggs and Thomas J. Socha gather in this volume contemporary theory and research concerning ways that families use communication to transform inherited cultural legacies for the better (Communication 3.0). The book expands the field of communication’s understanding of the life-long impact that family communication has on the managing diverse and clashing cultural relationships, identities, meanings, and communication practices. It spotlights the economically disenfranchised alongside the economically secure, the systematically oppressed next to beneficiaries of Whiteness, and those actually or metaphorically killed and or threatened by violence and hateful systems outside of home. Together, the contributions address omissions of diverse family contexts in family communication research and reconsider qualitative and quantitative approaches that bring respect and equality to the participant-researcher relationship. This book is suitable as a supplementary text for courses in family communication, family studies, race and ethnicity in communication, and intergroup communication.
Download or read book A Little Piece of Light written by Donna Hylton and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Random Family meets Orange Is the New Black in A Little Piece of Light, a memoir of survival, redemption, hope, and sisterhood from a bold new voice on the front lines of the criminal justice reform movement. Like so many women before her and so many women yet to come, Donna Hylton's early life was a nightmare of abuse that left her feeling alone and convinced of her worthlessness. In 1986, she took part in a horrific act and was sentenced to 25 years to life for kidnapping and second-degree murder. It seemed that Donna had reached the end--at age 19, due to her own mistakes and bad choices, her life was over. A Little Piece of Light tells the heartfelt, often harrowing tale of Donna's journey back to life as she faced the truth about the crime that locked her away for 27 years...and celebrated the family she found inside prison that ultimately saved her. Behind the bars of Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, alongside this generation's most infamous criminals, Donna learned to fight, then thrive. For the first time in her life, she realized she was not alone in the abuse and misogyny she experienced--and she was also not alone in fighting back. Since her release in 2012, Donna has emerged as a leading advocate for criminal justice reform and women's rights who speaks to politicians, violent abusers, prison officials, victims, and students to tell her story. But it's not her story alone, she is quick to say. She also represents the stories of thousands of women who have been unable to speak for themselves, until now.

Download or read book Arousing Love written by M. H. Strom and published by Marstro Press. This book was released on 2011-11-11 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You wanna play?” “Yeah, okay.” I didn’t really but these girls were pretty cute, especially the blonde one. “Throw the rings over the Eiffel tower.” The blonde girl pointed to the miniature Eiffel behind her. “You get a French treat for each one you get over.” Her hand brushed mine as she handed me the rings and I glanced up into stunning blue eyes. She turned away and I traced the shape of her slender body, my eyes lingering on her gentle curves. I blinked and concentrated on the model Eiffel. I didn’t want to make a fool of myself in front of these girls. I threw the first ring and got it over. Both girls cheered and I almost laughed at their enthusiasm. I tried to focus again but was too hurried this time and missed. “Ohhh that was close.” “Come on, you can do it.” I threw the last ring and the girls cheered again. I couldn’t help but grin at them. I wondered what my French treat would be. The dark-haired girl held up a tray with some kind of tart on it and a bread stick with a French flag toothpick stuck through it. “You made these?” “Yeah.” She smiled. “Mmm ... it’s good.” I stood there eating, not wanting to move away. “So ... how come you’re doing this beach festival?” “It’s a camp activity. It was Lizzie’s idea to do a taste of Paris.” The blonde girl glanced at her friend then smiled at me with such natural ease, her pretty face blooming into beautiful. “That’s cool. So you’re camping here?” “Yeah.” She smiled with such unguarded friendliness it took my breath away. “We come here every year.” Her lips were a soft, natural pink. “It’s a family camp.” Her long, golden hair shimmered as she combed her fingertips around one ear. “What about you?” The dark-haired girl I presumed was Lizzie asked, distracting me from my stare. “Uh, I live here. My family owns the store up the road.” “You’re lucky...” I looked at the pretty girl again as Lizzie, continued to talk. When she fell silent I realized I hadn’t heard a word she’d said and now she was looking at me expectantly. “Um, yeah,” I said, non-committal-like. Lizzie smiled. “Me too.” “I’d love to live near the sea.” The pretty girl looked into my eyes then glanced away, a slight blush coming to her cheeks. The skin above her neckline and exposed shoulders was so smooth it shone with reflected sunlight. “It’s really nice here.” She looked again into my eyes and this time she held my gaze. I was shocked at how beautiful she was. We were just staring at each other and I knew I had to say something but the conversational part of my brain had stopped working. I swallowed. “You wanna play?” Lizzie called out, looking past me. I turned to see a young boy approaching the booth and I stepped back to give him some room. The blonde girl gave me a wistful smile. I flashed her a grin, turned and walked away. I was on an adrenaline high. It was such a rush talking to a pretty girl like that. I replayed our conversation in my head, inwardly groaning that I hadn’t even said one intelligent or witty thing the whole time. “Hey!” I turned and my heart jumped. She was right behind me. “What’s your name?” She asked. “Uh ... Zach.” “I’m Joanna.” She stood there for a moment just smiling at me. “Well, it was nice meeting you, Zach. Hope I see you around some time.” “Yeah … me too.” She whirled and danced away before I could say anything else. Wow. I stood watching after her. She really was beautiful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great prophetic figures of our time was Jean Vanier, founder of the L'Arche communities, where those with and without disabilities share life together. This book tells the story of a new, practical development, inspired by Vanier, and taking further both his thought and the practice of L'Arche. Lyn's House is a small Christian house of hospitality and friendship in Cambridge, set in an open community of volunteers and supporters. Its story told here contains moving accounts of its origins and development, and of the friendships it enables. The contributors, all members of the wider Lyn's House community, also reflect on its meaning, and explore the implications for both church and society of this creative response to Vanier's call. Not only does the book convey the spirit of Lyn's House and its transformative effects on those who participate in it, it also offers inspiration and a practical guide to any who wish to begin something similar.
