Book Loving is Listening To the Fine Beating of Wings

Download or read book Loving is Listening To the Fine Beating of Wings written by Lois Silverstein and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-08-16 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of poems by Lois Silverstein offers us a vast range of feeling in poems for every taste: from the fi ne haiku-like precision of imagery and chiseled use of words and language to their condensations of allusions and a wide gamut of feeling; from their celebration of childhood wonder to the intimacy of love, its ritual bonds and mystical eroticism; from their intense longing for joy, with its concomitant melancholy and realism to their eloquent tribute to death, with choking feelings of grief. LOVING IS LISTENING TO THE FINE BEATING OF WINGS is a book of poems that matter. Please read them. -Abdul Jabbar, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus, City College of SF, English and Interdisciplinary Studies These poems sparkle. The objects and actions of daily life, the relationships within the family are presented as already refracted - their light is clear and at the same time changes direction - discovers new facets or new depths of a scene or an experience - nothing is simple here, least of all the way simple words redirect the reader to resee the ordinary. In fact, these are wonderful poems. I am full of admiration for them. I love reading them. Lois Silverstein as caught those fl itting passing moments of our lives -- the watching of a child in some discovery, the watching of a cat, a tree, a love and a deep loss. These are not poems just personal to the poet but to us. They speak of our own discoveries, sometimes horrible, it?s true, but they disclose some of the dimensions of our dearest reality. Ellen Spolsky, Ph.D., Professor of English, Bar-Ilan University, Israel

She cannot deny the spark, and she only hopes the inferno it ignites will not consume her heart again. According to the terms of her mother’s will, Ashly cannot cash in on her inheritance until she and Jake travel to nearly a dozen locations around the globe. The thought of pairing up with her old flame makes her blood boil, but she has little choice other than to put up with her despicable ex. Can Ashly put up with Jake through her globe-hopping scavenger hunt to get her family fortune? Will she ever be able to forget or forgive being dumped on her wedding day? When wounds run so deep, is forgiveness even possible between old lovers? Or is it, “Goodbye!” all over again, after everything is said and done?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: What happens at De La Porte’s annual Labor Day weekend party in the Hamptons— never stays in the Hamptons. After my marriage to my high school sweetheart ended, I made a list of all the things I “desired” the next time around. After all, marrying for love had failed me. One year single, and I had all the love I needed in an amazing career and great new friends — the ex got the old ones in the divorce. I was only lacking in one department … Hot, passionate sex -Taller than me -Fit, bulging, biteable arms -Six-pack abs -Suit and tie -Chiseled features -Tattoos -Gentleman on the streets, freak between the sheets -Oral AF -Smells delicious -Gives me chills -Can buy the occasional meal out -Not an employee of De La Porte That’s it. That’s all I wanted. Easy, huh? WRONG! Have you ever tried online dating? Shit. Show. No one’s honest or up front, and when you are, they slither back into the dark hole they momentarily climbed out of to rub one out. Standing at the bar with my best friend, the weekend of our annual Hamptons company getaway, a man who checked all my boxes magically appeared. I will admit it was the best weekend of my life … Until I found out he was still in college … and that his father was on the board of trustees.

Book The Botanic Garden by Erasmus Darwin

Download or read book The Botanic Garden by Erasmus Darwin written by Adam Komisaruk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The career of Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802) affords an extraordinary glimpse into the intellectual ferment of late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century Britain. As a popular poet, practicing physician, inventor of speaking machines and mechanical birds, essayer of natural history from geology to meteorology, and proponent of an evolutionary theory that inspired his famous grandson Charles, he left a lasting impression on almost every branch of knowledge. His magnum opus, and the synthesis of his myriad interests, is The Botanic Garden (1792) — an epic poem that aims to "enlist the Imagination under the banner of Science." Part I, The Economy of Vegetation, sings the praises of British industry as a dance of supernatural creatures while part II, The Loves of the Plants, wittily employs metaphors of human courtship to describe the reproductive cycles of hundreds of flowers. Darwin supplements his accomplished verses with (often much longer) "philosophical notes" that offer his idiosyncratic perspective on the scholarly controversies of the day. Despite a recent surge of academic interest in Darwin, however, no authoritative critical edition of The Botanic Garden exists, presenting a barrier to further scholarship. This two volume set comprises a complete, meticulously transcribed, reading text — including all the poetry, prose apparatus, and illustrations — along with extensive commentary. Throughout Darwin is situated within contemporary debates about the natural sciences, the "science of the mind", aesthetics, sexuality, politics, and spirituality, among other concerns. This set will be of interest to readers across these and related disciplines as the definitive reference edition of The Botanic Garden and due to its efforts to make the work more practically and intellectually accessible to seasoned and novice readers alike.

Book Monogamy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Von Hallberg
  • Publisher : Deep Vellum Publishing
  • Release : 2023-03-14
  • ISBN : 1628974265
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Monogamy written by Robert Von Hallberg and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monogamy elaborates an ideology of romance from extraordinary poems and songs, one by one. Poems and popular songs are still the main medium for preserving the rules of romance. Each chapter is a meditation on one of eight commonplaces about love: that it makes one monogamous, sentimental, vulnerable; that its force is immediate and transformative; or that it is a fickle force, but cannot be bought, and yet endures. Strong poets and lyricists bend these notions, as lovers do too. Great poems and songs come from interstices between celebrated commonplaces, felt desires and second-thoughts. The Book of Love is heterogeneous, complicated. Some love poems reach significant numbers through books and anthologies, and eventually classroom textbooks, and are held in memory by generations of admirers. Many popular songs, however, have reached extremely large audiences, beginning with Broadway musicals, and continuing in the recordings of later jazz vocalists. They are not read, but they are firmly lodged in memory. They are the only poems known by most audiences. Canonical poems are imitated by aspiring poets and versifiers. The actual verse culture is layered with light verse, song lyrics, and Shakespeare’s sonnets. To understand what poems effectively teach—about romance, in particular—one should attend closely to songs too, particularly in the U.S. since 1920.

Not only did he want her cold body, but he also wanted to take away her heart! Cold panic, chaos, she never dreamed that she would encounter this kind of misfortune. Book The Poetry of Sappho

Download or read book The Poetry of Sappho written by Jim Powell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-06 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Sapphic impression of emotion poured out in unpremeditated speech is the product of sophisticated art. Such poetry confronts the translator with a formidable challenge.... Jim Powell is fully aware of the dangers, and speaks of the 'fluidity, ease, grace, and melodic variety' of Sappho's measures. Powell has tried to reproduce the effect. The resulting book is a brilliant success. Powell has shored her fragments against [Sappho's] ruins to give us a garland in which the flowers, though tattered, have not faded."--Bernard Knox, The New Republic "Graceful, fluent, lucid while respectful of mystery: Jim Powell's unsurpassed embodiment of Sappho in English has all the conviction of art."--Robert Pinsky This new edition of The Poetry of Sappho translates all the surviving texts of Sappho that make consecutive poetic sense, including the newly discovered "Brothers Ode," "Cypris fragment," and other papyrus texts published in 2014. The translation is particularly intent on bringing over into English Sappho's formal mastery along with her sense. It includes summary discussions of Sappho's biography and the history of her texts, an essay on the formal character of her work and its tradition, and notes on the poems.
