Here we see a multi-dimensional, yet internal Francis as the ultimate disciple of Jesus: Francis as sufferer, in the wilderness, as itinerant, as misunderstood, in prayer, as teacher, as lover and protector of the poor, in authority while subject to God's authority, in community, as healer, as wounded.

Book excerpt: Intimations Poetry in the timeless tradition of the Minds Eye This is an astounding collection of intellectual poetry worthy of the Gold Seal of Literary Excellence. Venilla Rajaguru displays remarkable skills in the metaphorical stylistics of her poetic art. Most of the poems are in the form of poetic tales, poetic verse narratives telling a story, either a social satire or a philosophical, didactic story. These stories offer intimations of the minds eye, philosophical stances on realities and illusions, personal and social responsibilities in love and life. This is a rare collection of poetry that is thought provoking, inspiring, and enjoyable to read. The poems are organized under three distinct yet correlated thematic frameworks: lifescape, lovescape, and blindscape. Each section is genuinely an intellectual discovery of stylistics and themes, interconnected by the central metaphor of this book, the minds eye. A must-read for poetry lovers! Fiction readers will find the poetic stories truly engaging!

Book Complete and Full with Numbers

Download or read book Complete and Full with Numbers written by John MacQueen and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2006 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a major re-examination of the works of the fifteenth-century Scottish poet, Robert Henryson. Encompassing the full range of the poet's work, Professor John MacQueen opens up previously unexplored areas of both Henryson's literary practice and his underlying moral and philosophical vision. MacQueen argues that numerology is central to the intellectual landscape that shaped Henryson's development as a poet, and that numerological patterns and structures are embedded throughout his corpus, revealing themselves not simply in such overtly allegorical works as The Testament of Cresseid, but also in many of the Fables as well. This book therefore recovers for a modern audience qualities to which Henryson's original readers would have been alert, while at the same time conveying something of the energy and excitement of his intellectual and poetic culture. Through a series of close and sensitive readings of the poems, the book presents an original and lucid account of Henryson's work that will not only engage specialists in medieval Scottish literature, but will also appeal to a wider readership with broader interests in narrative and poetic form.

  • Author : Charlie Yi Zhang
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2022-02-07

  • Pages : 134 pages

Download or read book Dreadful Desires written by Charlie Yi Zhang and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dreadful Desires Charlie Yi Zhang examines how the Chinese state deploys affective notions of love to regulate the population and secure China’s place in the global economy. Zhang shows how the state frames love as a set of desires that encompass heteronormative intimacy, familial and communal attachment, upward mobility, and private property ownership. These desires—as circulated in performance in the nationalistic ceremony, same-sex romantic fan fiction, the wildly popular reality television dating show If You Are the One, and the cult of patriarchal personality around Xi Jinping—are explicitly based in oppressive systems of gender, class, and sexuality. Zhang contends that such desires connect love to economic survival and gender normativity in ways that underwrite Chinese neoliberalism at the expense of individual flourishing. By outlining how state-framed forms of love create desires that cannot be fulfilled, Zhang places China at the forefront of using affective attachments to nation, leader, and family in the global shifts toward exploitation and authoritarianism.

Book Moli re s Theatrical Bounty

Download or read book Moli re s Theatrical Bounty written by Albert Bermel and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring each of Molière's 33 plays (including the divertissements) for its theatrical possibilities, Bermel deals with dramatic structures, settings, roles and their interactions, original productions, and outstanding recent stage performances in France, Britain, and the United States. His emphasis is theatrical rather than literary, philosophical, or biographical, although he necessarily brings these considerations to bear when discussing certain plays. Bermel introduces a new methodology, one featuring the type of scrutiny directors, actors, and designers apply to any play before and during rehearsal. Thus he studies the dramatic implications of each scene or part of a scene by noting which characters are present, which ones are absent, and why. He analyzes each role, explores interactions among characters, traces the significance of structure, considers how much information is provided and who provides it, and examines such notable background factors as setting, season, and scenic arrangement. Using this methodology, Bermel provides new interpretations of Molière's most celebrated plays and demonstrates that many of the less famous plays also deserve attention. Previous Molière critics have been conservative, especially in that they favor traditional stagings; Bermel, however, encourages new explorations of the plays. His main intention is to keep Molière alive and vital for present and future readers and audiences. Nowhere is this more apparent than in his attention to, and sympathy for, female characters and their points of view.

Book Analogy in Word formation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a gap in lexical morphology, especially with reference to analogy in English word-formation. Many studies have focused their interest on the role played by analogy within English inflectional morphology. However, the analogical mechanism also deserves investigation on account of its relevance to neology in English. This volume provides in-depth qualitative analyses and stimulating quantitative findings in this realm.

Book Another Freedom

  • Author : Svetlana Boym
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2018-07-02
  • ISBN : 0226069753
  • Pages : 376 pages

Download or read book Another Freedom written by Svetlana Boym and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word “freedom” is so overly used—and frequently abused—that it is always in danger of becoming nothing but a cliché. In Another Freedom, Svetlana Boym offers us a refreshing new portrait of the age-old concept. Exploring the rich cross-cultural history of the idea of freedom, from its origins in ancient Greece to the present day, she argues that our attempts to imagine freedom should occupy the space of not only “what is” but also “what if.” Beginning with notions of sacrifice and the emergence of a public sphere for politics and art, Boym expands her account to include the relationships between freedom and liberation, modernity and terror, and political dissent and creative estrangement. While depicting a world of differences, she affirms lasting solidarities based on the commitment to the passionate thinking that reflections on freedom require. To do so, Boym assembles a remarkable cast of characters: Aeschylus and Euripides, Kafka and Mandelstam, Arendt and Heidegger, and a virtual encounter between Dostoevsky and Marx on the streets of Paris. By offering a fresh look at the strange history of this idea, Another Freedom delivers a nuanced portrait of freedom, one whose repercussions will be felt well into the future.
