Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lovell's Gazetteer of British North America, 1895: Containing the Latest and Most Authentic Descriptions of Over 8, 900 Cities, Towns, Villages, and Places In nearly every case the name of the place is followed by that of the county in which it is situated, and then the province. The nearest railway point is then given, and the name of the railway by which, by consulting the Table of Routes, the traveller can ascertain how he is'to reach it. The nearest seaport is also given where trade of any importance is thus carried on. Special attention is also given to the denominations of the various churches in each place, while the number of stores, the hotels, banks, express offices, telegraph Offices, factories and other industries are recorded, as well as the population, either from the census of 1891, or from a careful estimate of some reliable local authority. In regard to settlements with no very distinct limits, and frequently including an uncertain radius around a post office, the reare, no doubt, some cases where the outlying population may be included also in that of some adjacent settlement, but, for all practical purposes, these unavoidable errors may be overlooked.
