Book excerpt: LOVE'S COMING-OF-AGEA SERIES OF PAPERSONTHE RELATIONS OF THE SEXESBYEDWARD CARPENTERDEDICATIONThe little god of Love is general represented as a child; and rightly perhaps, considering the erratic character of his ways among the human race. There are signs however of a new order in the relations of the Sexes; and the following tapers are, among other things, an attempt to indicate the inner laws which, rather than the outer, may guide Love when--some day--he shall have come to his full estate.

This book was released on 2016-07-04 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Carpenter (29 August 1844 - 28 June 1929) was an English socialist poet, philosopher, anthologist, and early LGBT activist. A poet and writer, he was a close friend of Rabindranath Tagore, and a friend of Walt Whitman. He corresponded with many famous figures such as Annie Besant, Isadora Duncan, Havelock Ellis, Roger Fry, Mahatma Gandhi, Keir Hardie, J. K. Kinney, Jack London, George Merrill, E. D. Morel, William Morris, Edward R. Pease, John Ruskin, and Olive Schreiner. As a philosopher he is particularly known for his publication of Civilisation, Its Cause and Cure in which he proposes that civilisation is a form of disease that human societies pass through. An early advocate of sexual freedoms, he had an influence on both D. H. Lawrence and Aurobindo, and inspired E. M. Forster's novel Maurice Born in Hove in Sussex, Carpenter was educated at nearby Brighton College where his father was a governor. His brothers Charles, George and Alfred also went to school there. When he was ten, he displayed a flair for the piano. His academic ability appeared relatively late in his youth, but was sufficient enough to earn him a place at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Whilst there he began to explore his feelings for men. One of the most notable examples of this is his close friendship with Edward Anthony Beck (later Master of Trinity Hall), which, according to Carpenter, had "a touch of romance." Beck eventually ended their friendship, causing Carpenter great emotional heartache. Carpenter graduated as 10th Wrangler in 1868. After university he joined the Church of England as a curate, "as a convention rather than out of deep Conviction." In 1871 he was invited to become tutor to the royal princes George Frederick (late King George V) and his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, but declined the position. The job instead went to his lifelong friend and fellow Cambridge student John Neale Dalton. Carpenter continued to visit Dalton while he was tutor, and was presented with photographs of themselves by the princes.

Book excerpt: This relatively short book of essays by pioneering socialist and esteemed author Edward Carpenter is a look at gender roles at the start of the 20th century, and his well-balanced view on how those roles might evolve. In the past century many of his then-utopian predictions have come to pass, such as reasoned sexual education, greater equality for women, recognition of a spectrum of sexual identities, widespread acceptance of open relationships, and the various enrichments of the stifling nature of what is considered traditional marriage. Some of these predictions, inevitably, such as the use of 'Karezza' (extended coitus without ejaculation) for contraception, and a communist society leading to the liberation of women from the drudgery of housework, though, have fallen flat. THE SEX-PASSION MAN, THE UNGROWN WOMAN, THE SERF WOMAN IN FREEDOM MARRIAGE, A RETROSPECT MARRIAGE, A FORECAST THE INTERMEDIATE SEX THE FREE SOCIETY REMARKS AND NOTES SOME REMARKS ON THE EARLY STAR AND SEX WORSHIPS NOTE ON THE PRIMITIVE GROUP-MARRIAGE ON JEALOUSY ON THE FAMILY ON PREVENTIVE CHECKS TO POPULATION

Book An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform A L

Download or read book An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform A L written by Christopher Hoolihan and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of rare books dealing with "popular medicine" in early America which is housed at the University of Rochester Medical School library. The books described in the catalogue were written by physicians and other professionals to provide information for the non-medical audience. The books taught human anatomy, hygiene, temperance and diet, how to maintain health, and how to cope with illness especially when no professional help was available. The books promoted a healthy lifestyle for the readers, giving guidance on everything from physical fitness and recreation to the special health needs of women. The collection consists of works dealing with reproduction [from birth control to delivering and caring for a baby], venereal disease, home-nursing, epidemics, and the need for public sex education. These books, covering areas largely ignored by the medical profession, made important contributions to the health of the American public, and the collection is a vital piece of medical history. The collector is Edward C. Atwater, Professor Emeritus of Medicine and the History of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical School. Christopher Hoolihan is History of Medicine Librarian at the University of Rochester Medical School's Edward G. Miner LIbrary.
