Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating history of the song for every kind of music lover Often today, the word ‘song’ is used to describe all music. A free-jazz improvisation, a Hindustani raga, a movement from a Beethoven symphony: apparently, they’re all songs. But they’re not. From Sia to Springsteen, Archie Roach to Amy Winehouse, a song is a specific musical form. It’s not so much that they all have verses and choruses – though most of them do – but that they are all relatively short and self-contained; they have beginnings, middles and ends; they often have a single point of view, message or story; and, crucially, they unite words and music. Thus, a Schubert song has more in common with a track by Joni Mitchell or Rihanna than with one of Schubert’s own symphonies. The Song Remains the Same traces these connections through seventy-five songs from different cultures and times: love songs, anthems, protest songs, lullabies, folk songs, jazz standards, lieder and pop hits; ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ to ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Jerusalem’ to ‘Jolene’. Unpicking their inner workings makes familiar songs strange again, explaining and restoring the wonder, joy (or possibly loathing) the reader experienced on first hearing. ‘As much about singing, musicianship and recording as it is about songwriting, this eclectic ride through a unique choice of songs (everyone will argue for alternatives) is cleverly curated and littered with intriguing details about the creators and their times, filled with loving cross-references to other songs and deft musical analysis. I defy anyone not to leap online to listen to the unfamiliar, or re-listen to old favourites in light of new detail. One of the best games in this book is figuring out why one song follows the other: there’s always an intelligent, often very funny, link.’ —Robyn Archer

Book excerpt: ""My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior."" Luke 1:46 & 47 We live in a world where life often seems to have no rhyme or reason. There is so much discord, hatred and confusion. With this lack of harmony, we may ask ourselves, ÒWhere is the Lord our Divine Composer?Ó Then, above all the chaos in the stillness of your heart, there are words so loud you need to listen; there may even be a desire to write them down. It is not the volume I describe, but the intensity of awareness that comes with God's Òstill small voiceÓ which billows, ÒYou are not alone.Ó His Voice is incomparable, for it permeates with His Love. God's Love like a mighty wave saturating your soul, like a rolling flame consuming your heart. And to His Love we all must respond...

Book Love Justice and Autonomy

Download or read book Love Justice and Autonomy written by Rachel Fedock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophers have long been interested in love and its general role in morality. This volume focuses on and explores the complex relation between love and justice as it appears within loving relationships, between lovers and their wider social context, and the broader political realm. Special attention is paid to the ensuing challenge of understanding and respecting the lovers’ personal autonomy in all three contexts. Accordingly, the essays in this volume are divided into three thematic sections. Section I aims at shedding further light on conceptual and practical issues concerning the compatibility or incompatibility of love and justice within relationships of love. For example, are loving relations inherently unjust? Might love require justice? Or do love and justice belong to distinct moral domains? The essays in Section II consider the relation between the lovers on the one hand and their broader societal environment on the other. Specifically, how exactly are love and impartiality related? Are they compatible or not? Is it unjust to favor one’s beloved? Finally, Section III looks at the political dimensions of love and justice. How, for instance, do various accounts of love inform how we are to relate to our fellow citizens? If love is taken to play an important role in fostering or hindering the development of personal autonomy, what are the political implications that need to be addressed, and how? In addressing these questions, this book engenders a better understanding both of conceptual and practical issues regarding the relation between love, justice, and autonomy as well as their broader societal and political implications. It will be of interest to advanced students and scholars working on the philosophy of love from ethical, political, and psychological angles.

Book excerpt: When horse-savvy James is hired by the Duke of Dorchester to deliver a young Arab stallion to the colony of Newfoundland aboard the Hindsight in the year 1800, James and the duke’s beautiful daughter, Alicia, realize this is a perfect opportunity for them both to board the ship and escape to the New World. They would cross the sea, deliver the young horse to a Mr. Penney who lived on Bell Island, and then they would be free to live their lives as husband and wife. Nothing could stop them, so they thought. Then it happened. The Hindsight could not withstand a sudden Atlantic storm that arose near the Newfoundland coastline. Yet James and Alicia are not defeated, even as the ship founders, they tie themselves to each other with horse leads and then to the young stallion. Even as they hear frantic cries as the Hindsight slides below the waves - the powerful stallion - bred to withstand any challenge surges onward and away to an unknown shore. Alicia gives in to the ice-cold sea. James catches sight of a single light, flickering in the distance, and with that the young black stallion senses shore - and is able to scramble up on a rocky beach. Out of the darkness come two Newfoundlanders. Knowing the secrets of how to outsmart Poseidon’s deadly hand, Ted and Marion Martin, true Newfoundlanders, get to work to save Alicia. Equally important and pivotal to the entire saga is the lonely Mr. Robert Penney. Overwhelmed with joy when James delivers the young stallion to his doorstep, Mr. Penney offers James, Alicia and their two Newfoundland friends an opportunity that sweeps the reader through the next fifty years of true-to-life Newfoundland‘s rich history.
