Book Lust for Liberty

    Book Details:
  • Author : Samuel Kline COHN
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2009-06-30
  • ISBN : 0674029674
  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book Lust for Liberty written by Samuel Kline COHN and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lust for Liberty challenges long-standing views of popular medieval revolts. Comparing rebellions in northern and southern Europe over two centuries, Samuel Cohn analyzes their causes and forms, their leadership, the role of women, and the suppression or success of these revolts. Popular revolts were remarkably common--not the last resort of desperate people. Leaders were largely workers, artisans, and peasants. Over 90 percent of the uprisings pitted ordinary people against the state and were fought over political rights--regarding citizenship, governmental offices, the barriers of ancient hierarchies--rather than rents, food prices, or working conditions. After the Black Death, the connection of the word liberty with revolts increased fivefold, and its meaning became more closely tied with notions of equality instead of privilege. The book offers a new interpretation of the Black Death and the increase of and change in popular revolt from the mid-1350s to the early fifteenth century. Instead of structural explanations based on economic, demographic, and political models, this book turns to the actors themselves--peasants, artisans, and bourgeois--finding that the plagues wrought a new urgency for social and political change and a new self- and class-confidence in the efficacy of collective action.

Book America s War on Sex

Download or read book America s War on Sex written by Marty Klein Ph.D. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-04-13 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book exposes how a coalition of political, religious, and civic leaders are using the issue of sex to frighten, misinform, and bully Americans—paving the way for dramatic new public policies that are already restricting everyone's rights. Americans are more vulnerable today than ever to anxiety about sexual danger, to believing that their sexuality is not "normal" or moral, and to laws and public policies that restrict their rights, criminalize their consenting behavior, and confuse and miseducate their children. In the second edition of America's War on Sex: The Continuing Attack on Law, Lust, and Liberty, psychologist, sex therapist, and courtroom expert witness Marty Klein sets the record straight and uncovers how the "Sexual Disaster Industry" works—a powerful social and political propaganda machine that is supported by the very citizens it victimizes. This book analyzes eight "battlegrounds" in which America's War on Sex is being fought and examines how each one is the focus of an unrelenting struggle to regulate sexuality in direct contradiction to our Constitutional guarantees, scientific fact, and the needs of average Americans. Klein places these various attacks on our rights in historical context, explains how the money and political power are coordinated from the same sources, and shows how the Religious Right inflames Americans' anxiety about sexuality even as it proposes repressive schemes to reduce that anxiety. This book tackles a sensitive and volatile topic head-on, addressing how the political, social, historical, religious, and emotional issues surrounding public policy interfaces with sexuality as no other work has before.

In The Healing Power of Spirituality and Religion, an extraordinary group of scholars discuss the latest scientific research into the connection between belief and psychological and physical well-being. Each volume of The Healing Power of Spirituality focuses on a specific aspect of the scientific exploration of faith and well being: volume one examines the healing power of personal spiritualities like I Ching and Transcendentalism; volume two looks at the subject in the context of Christianity, Judaism, and other world faiths; and volume three explores the psychodynamics of healing spirituality and religion, including the role of biochemical and chemical reactions in heightening psychospiritual apperception.

Book It Takes All Kinds

  • Publisher : Author House
  • Release : 2011-07-13
  • ISBN : 1456701223
  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book It Takes All Kinds written by C. Leon Cole and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-07-13 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It Takes All Kinds takes a look at life without the labels. So many times people try to live their lives according to the labels that the world puts on them. That is absolutely unnecessary. The characters in this book could live next door to you or just down the street. They live their lives according to the rules that work for them. The world uses terms like interracial, bi-sexual, gay or lesbian, why can't we all just be human. That's what we all are anyway. In most cases we are all looking for generally the same things, as the United States Declaration of Independence calls them; life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. As one reads this book it is the hope that each reader will find someone they know, or some experience that is similar to something that they have gone through. This book will show its readers new ways of looking at things that have been explained to them by people who did not actually have a point of reference to make any explanations. It may shine a light or a bit of understanding on facets of life that many people have never even considered. It Takes All Kinds will look at a few situations that could have happened at almost any point in time, with a subtle instructive insight. The circumstances that will be developed are plausible as well as intriguing. Be prepared to be captivated by the realism of the characters, amused by the comedy in their antics, excited by the pragmatism of each scenario and teased by the sensuality of the various relationships from It Takes All Kinds; an adventure in lust, love and life.
