Download or read book A British Watercolours written by Whitworth Art Gallery and published by Philip Wilson Publishers. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Whitworth Gallery, founded in 1889, holds one of the finest collections of British watercolours and drawings. This is the first book to publish this outstanding group of works in its entirety, and provides a fascinating insight into the collection. The collection is especially important because of the broad range of artists it encompasses. Holdings of Turner and Girtin are particularly significant, as are the works by Alexander and John Robert Cozens. While the main strength comes from the eighteenth century, there are also important nineteenth-century entries, including famous watercolours by Ford Madox Brown, Millais, Burne-Jones, Rossetti and Holman Hunt. Combining broad popular appeal with scholarly interest, this watercolour collection provides a source of enjoyment to the many collectors of English watercolours. The book begins with a brief introduction to the background of the collection, followed by each work presented alphabetically by artist. Each entry includes a short biography and description, followed by listings of other works. All 2,500 works are included, 2,000 of which are illustrated in black and white, and 32 in colour.
Download or read book Turner on the Seine written by Ian Warrell and published by Tate Publishing(UK). This book was released on 1999 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turner published two volumes of views of the River Seine in the early 1830s, when he was at the height of his success. All of the watercolours he completed for the project are reproduced in this book, along with many of his preliminary studies. As the text demonstrates, the watercolours are born out of Turner's long familiarity with the river. His views came as part of an explosion in the market for travel books, particularly for the area between Paris and the coast, and a number of these comparable publications, with their illustrations by some of Turner's finest rivals, are discussed. The book also examines how Turner confronted the technical innovations of the new age, making contemporary features, such as canals and steamboats, the subjects of his pictures, and thereby preparing the ground for masterpieces such as The Fighting Temeraire.

Download or read book The Spooner Collection of British Watercolours at the Courtauld Institute Gallery written by Michael Broughton and published by Paul Holberton Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spooner Collection of watercolours is one of the finest of its kind, featuring all the leading artists of the period 1750 - 1850. Notable among them are watercolours of the Lake District by John White Abbott, and rural scenes by several artists - Gainsborough, Turner, Cozens, Rowlandson, Francis Towne, Samuel Palmer. Architecture dominates the setting, in works by Girtin, Cotman and Sandby. The essays accompanying the catalogue discuss outdoor painting and the role of memory in watercolour painting, the connoisseurship, and attitudes towards watercolours; and give a brief biography of William Wycliffe Spooner himself. This complete catalogue of the collection, bequeathed by Spooner to the Courtauld Institute, is published on the occasion of a touring exhibition of select works from the collection, showing at The Worsworth Trust, Grasmere; The Huntingdon Library, California; and the Courtauld Institute Gallery, London, 2005 - 2006.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British artists from Hollar to Ruskin excelled in the art of the watercolour. In its delicate strength they found the perfect medium in which to express a growing response to Nature and their environment. Artists such as Sandby, Girtin, Turner, and Cotman travelled in search of romantic landscapes, picturesque ruins and dramatic urban skylines, visiting places as diverse as the Yorkshire moors, Norwich, Venice and Rome. Over 140 of their finest watercolours are reproduced here in full colour and discussed in detailed notes. In the introduction Lindsay Stainton explores the development of the relationship between Nature and Art and shows how patrons and the public could influence the life and work of an artist during this golden age of British painting. -- Book cover.
