  • Pages : 330 pages

Book excerpt: Peter A. Luber's second novel explores the abyss that looms just a few missteps off every traveler's path. Party Line peers into its darkness over the shoulders of seven uniquely linked, often troubled, and occasionally heroic souls. Despite their variety of personality and routes taken toward despair, the seven share an opportunity to tiptoe clear of a long, dark fall, provided they forget themselves and work together toward real peace. Party Line portrays these penultimate moments by looking out from within each character, through their dreams. Each chapter is a disturbingly familiar leap into the nightly journeys of Lou, Alice, and five other people. The splash of their adventures both transcends their mundane daily lives and provides adventure and symbolic experience that cannot be found anywhere else. Party Line can be read from page one as a narrative (best done in one sitting, which may happen), but also can be opened randomly for a very different reading experience.

Book True Crime Philadelphia

  • Author : Kathryn Canavan
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2021-11-15
  • ISBN : 1493036165
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book True Crime Philadelphia written by Kathryn Canavan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serial killer H.H. Holmes built his murder castle in Chicago, but he met the hangman in Philadelphia. Al Capone served his first prison sentence here. The real-life killers who inspired HBO’s Boardwalk Empire lived and died here. America’s first bank robbery was pulled off here in 1798. The country’s first kidnapping for ransom came off without a hitch in 1874. A South Philadelphia man hatched the largest mass murder plot in U.S. history in the 1930s. His partners in crime were unhappy housewives. Catholics and Protestants aimed cannon at each other in city streets in 1844. Civil rights hero Octavius V. Catto was gunned down on South Street in 1871. Take a walk with us through city history. Would you pass Eastern State Penitentiary on April 3, 1945, just as famed bank robber Willie Sutton popped out of an escape tunnel in broad daylight? Or you might have been one of the invited guests at H.H. Holmes’ hanging at Moyamensing Prison on a gray morning in May 1896. It still ranks as one of the most bizarre executions in city history. Or, if you walked down Washington Lane on July 1, 1874, would you have been alert enough to stop the two men who lured little blond Charley Ross away with candy? You might have stopped America’s first kidnapping for ransom, the one that gave rise to the admonition, “Never take candy from a stranger.” The case inspired the Leopold and Loeb kidnapping. Then there was the bank robber whose funeral drew thousands of spectators and the burglary defendant so alluring that conversation would stop whenever she entered the courtroom. Mix in murderous maids, bumbling burglars, and unflinching local heroes and you have True Crime Philadelphia.

When eleven-year-old Hank’s mom doesn’t come home, he takes care of his toddler sister, Boo, like he always does. But it’s been a week now. They are out of food and mom has never stayed away this long… Hank knows he needs help, so he and Boo seek out the stranger listed as their emergency contact. But asking for help has consequences. It means social workers, and a new school, and having to answer questions about his mom that he's been trying to keep secret. And if they can't find his mom soon, Hank and Boo may end up in different foster homes--he could lose everything. Gennifer Choldenko has written a heart-wrenching, healing, and ultimately hopeful story about how complicated family can be. About how you can love someone, even when you can’t rely on them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know Band-Aids were invented by accident?! And that they weren't mass-produced until the Boy Scouts gave their seal of approval? 1920s cotton buyer Earle Dickson worked for Johnson & Johnson and had a klutzy wife who often cut herself. The son of a doctor, Earle set out to create an easier way for her to bandage her injuries. Band-Aids were born, but Earle's bosses at the pharmaceutical giant weren't convinced, and it wasn't until the Boy Scouts of America tested Earle's prototype that this ubiquitous household staple was made available to the public. Soon Band-Aids were selling like hotcakes, and the rest is boo-boo history. "Appealingly designed and illustrated, an engaging, fun story" — Kirkus Reviews STARRED REVIEW

Book Life in Oakhurst

Download or read book Life in Oakhurst written by Lori Howard and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing little snippets about my daily life is nothing more than trying to remain connected to people I care about most. How often do we cruise through life not relishing even the tiniest of successes, learning opportunities and pleasures much less sharing those chosen moments with people that support and even look forward to our next adventure in life. 2002 was the year of loss for my husband and I. Not all of our losses were negative between the two of us we lost over 100 lbs.! Once youve experienced the type of losses we did during this year, you begin to take stock in your values, dreams and priorities. So in an attempt to redefi ne ourselves we sold our fully paid for San Diego based home and moved to a one- bedroom, two-story, beyond-ugly green, get away pad on a ten acre parcel on Deadwood Mountain. (Makes me want to keep an eye out for Outlaw/ Rustlers) A perfectly reasonable diversion for two city folks, with the belief that bears belong in the zoo and lattes should be available on every street corner! Why not uproot the declawed cats, and never consider asking ourselves the question So what is the difference between septic and sewer? What we found, are the experiences that make us smile, question (what were we thinking?) and somehowsome way appreciate our new life through the absurd and benign evolution of every day events. To add to the mayhem, we decided to become innkeepers and pool our resources together to build our own little slice of heaven as we create the perfect Bed and Breakfast. It didnt really matter that I never met a bed I ever wanted to make up or the thought of scrubbing toilets leaving me a little disgruntled. It was the idea of living in paradise and sharing it with great people along the way. So here we are sharing a few snippets of Life in Oakhurst

Book What My Wheelchair Taught Me

Download or read book What My Wheelchair Taught Me written by Lisa Dianne Jones and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lisa Jones made a conscious choice to disregard what fate might have chosen for her, instead embracing and consistently using her free will to the maximum. What My Wheelchair Taught Me is about Lisa Jones, soulmate to others and how she has led her normal life, but it is also about Lisa Jones, the woman with a disability, and how her life has been shaped by disability and the world’s reaction to it. What My Wheelchair Taught Me seeks to change people’s perceptions and beliefs about people with disabilities by showing the impact Jones’ disability has had on her life, and by revealing insights into how people with disabilities are treated and why. We need to see people first for what they can do, not what they cannot do. Her writing shows readers with disabilities the true range of possibilities they have by giving a gentle push to live their own authentic lives, making their own life decisions, and achieving possibilities despite their disability. This change in perception can lead to seeing disability as an inconvenience to be managed, not as an unchangeable life sentence. People with disabilities can experience a rich range of human experiences that our culture doesn’t consider normal or necessary for people, especially women, with disabilities. Even if we have a disability, we can still do whatever we would like or want to do, just maybe not in the same way as everyone else. No one needs to be judged solely or primarily based on the things they are unable to do.
