Yet the goal of these ethics is `a life in fullness and freedom'. Without ethical guidelines and personal responsibility, a life cannot succeed. Norms and laws aim to create space for life and protect it. To fill this freedom, people are responsible for that. And being responsible means: owing an answer to someone. Ethics therefore always takes place in relation: to one's own conscience, to the good that can be accomplished, and in relation to other living beings and nature. Christian ethics, moreover, places this responsibility in relation to God. People are free, but also limited; they hurt each other and need forgiveness and reconciliation. Often people can reconcile with each other, but sometimes accounts remain open: the evil was too great or the reconciliation failed. Christian theology can refer to redemption here. It is just not easy to reconcile its content with the everyday reality of modern people. This systematic introduction to moral theology offers an explanation in understandable anthropological terms. It shows how the Christian message provides a meaningful answer to the open question of how a human life can succeed. Anyone who tries to mediate meaningfully between tradition and modernity in the pastoral practice of the church will find this book a guide.

Sera Khandro Künzang Dekyong Chönyi Wangmo (also called Dewé Dorjé, 1892–1940) was extraordinary not only for achieving religious mastery as a Tibetan Buddhist visionary and guru to many lamas, monastics, and laity in the Golok region of eastern Tibet, but also for her candor. This book listens to Sera Khandro's conversations with land deities, dakinis, bodhisattvas, lamas, and fellow religious community members whose voices interweave with her own to narrate what is a story of both love between Sera Khandro and her guru, Drimé Özer, and spiritual liberation. Sarah H. Jacoby's analysis focuses on the status of the female body in Sera Khandro's texts, the virtue of celibacy versus the expediency of sexuality for religious purposes, and the difference between profane lust and sacred love between male and female tantric partners. Her findings add new dimensions to our understanding of Tibetan Buddhist consort practices, complicating standard scriptural presentations of male subject and female aide. Sera Khandro depicts herself and Drimé Özer as inseparable embodiments of insight and method that together form the Vajrayana Buddhist vision of complete buddhahood. By advancing this complementary sacred partnership, Sera Khandro carved a place for herself as a female virtuoso in the male-dominated sphere of early twentieth-century Tibetan religion.

First she sets off searching for her real roots which dates back to colonial times and the slave trade. She lives mostly on the "bright side" but soon discovers some mysteries while everyone thought she "had no sense of time" and her father called her "a walking disaster". Despite the almost idyllic environment that surrounds her, she soon discovers that there is always a snake in paradise. From small she tries to make sense of whispered conversations by the grown-ups and by the way she discovers a terrible family secret which is revealed in the book. She discovers some of her grandparents, but the identity of one, Abdul Ebrahim Hassan, remains shrouded in mystery. She reflects on some personal experiences of parental oppression at home and at school that leads initially to rebellion and later conscientization when reaching University in Cape Town. Participation together with fellow students in the Soweto uprising of 1976, while studying, is an important learning experience.The death of her lover causes deep personal trauma and brings on depression and other health problems, which becomes a constant battle. Later on when forced into exile she manages to come out into the light with "a little help" from her sisters, a few women friends and her mother's loving support through letter-writing. She manages to successfully complete her studies, find the love of her life, get married and have a family, something which seemed a virtual impossibility at one point. She also comes to the conclusion that finding one's roots is important but finding oneself even moreso.
