Book Lost Cricket Stickers

Download or read book Lost Cricket Stickers written by Matt Appleby and published by Pitch Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lost Cricket Stickers brings you the inside story of the 1983 cricket season, locating lost heroes and discovering their journeys with the help of a Panini sticker album. 1983 was a pivotal year for cricket. India won the World Cup and England lost to New Zealand at home, both for the first time. There was a 35-minute century and a 14 all out. Yorkshire came bottom of the Championship (and won the John Player League), while South Africa tour rebels, banned from playing for England, dominated the county game. Thatcher won a landslide election victory post-Falklands. This is a warm, funny and insightful tale of tracking down a fondly remembered player from each county, each with his unique take on then and now. The book is based on the only cricket sticker album of the era. Four decades on, the county game has transformed. The Hundred and video analysis have replaced the John Player League and pub sessions after a long day in the field. But is that for better or worse?

Book The Stick Chair Book

Download or read book The Stick Chair Book written by Christopher Schwarz and published by . This book was released on 2023-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "..."The Stick Chair Book" is divided into three sections. The first section, "Thinking About Chairs," introduces you to the world of common stick chairs, plus the tools and wood to build them. The second section - "Chairmaking Techniques" - covers every process involved in making a chair, from cutting stout legs, to making curved arms with straight wood, to carving the seat. Plus, you'll get a taste for the wide variety of shapes you can use. The chapter on seats shows you how to lay out 14 different seat shapes. The chapter on legs has 16 common forms that can be made with only a couple handplanes. Add those to the 11 different arm shapes, six arm-joinery options, 14 shapes for hands, seven stretcher shapes and 11 combs, and you could make stick chairs your entire life without ever making the same one twice. The final section offers detailed plans for five stick chairs, from a basic Irish armchair to a dramatic Scottish comb-back. These five chair designs are a great jumping-off point for making stick chairs of your own design. Additional chapters in the book cover chair comfort, finishing and sharpening the tools. From the author: "When I first wrote 'The Stick Chair Book' in 2021, I was also fighting cancer. So I hammered out the text with urgency and the desire to record every fragment of information I knew about chairmaking. "To be fair, that's usually how I go about writing all my books. But then I typically take a couple months off, put the manuscript aside, then revisit it with fresh eyes and a sharpened pen. My final revisions remove about 10-20 percent of the original material. The stuff I cut is usually chapters that don't match the tone of the rest of the text. Or I snip sections that aren't as relevant as when I first wrote them. I also smooth out the writing and add bits of information I'd forgotten during the first brain-to-fingers dump. "And that's exactly what I've done for this revised edition. As a result, the text is 10.1 percent shorter than the first edition. It's more to the point. And it's where the manuscript would have ended up under normal conditions..."--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cricket on Everest starts with an idea over a pint of beer and ends with a world record at 5,165 metres above sea level. In 2009, 50 people from the UK, many of whom had never met until a year earlier, played the highest ever game of cricket on the slopes of the world’s tallest mountain. The idea captured the imagination of people around the globe, making front page news in several countries; being followed by millions through daily TV news updates and raising more than £100k for charity. What people did not see, however, was what happened behind the scenes. The book details several near-misses that the organisers kept quiet – including securing permission to enter the National Park where Everest is situated just a day before the group were due to arrive. Friendships were pushed to the very limit and many people gave their all to organise a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The heartache from several people dropping out of the expedition was counteracted by the highs of taking part in such a unique and life-changing experience. Ultimately, this a story of 50 people going outside of their comfort zones to achieve something many thought impossible. It brought people and communities together, changed the lives of many and reminded everyone that adventure is accessible to anyone. Cricket on Everest will appeal to fans of sport and travel writing. Author Alan has been inspired by Harry Thompson’s Penguins Stopped Play and Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air.
