The socialists of the Front Generation,young men in 1914, were driven into politicalactivity and ideological exploration by the experience of the First World War. Their efforts torenew socialism, to carry it beyond Marxism andbeyond the working class, were profound andoriginal, yet ultimately they failed. Lost Comrades follows the Front Generationsocialists from their questioning of Marxistorthodoxies in the 1920s into their confrontationswith the twin challenges of fascism and worlddepression in the early 1930s. Responding to thesedangers, they devised—with little success—counterpropaganda against the fascists and planningblueprints for the economy. Eventually, some ofthe most prominent—Sir Oswald Mosley inBritain, Hendrik de Man in Belgium, Marcel Déatin France—shifted their hopes to fascism or, dur-ing the Second World War, to collaborationism inHitler's Europe. Others, however, like CarloMierendorff and Theodor Haubach in Germany,ended as martyrs in the anti-Nazi resistance. Yeteven these divergent paths showed parallelsreflecting their common starting point. In tracing these unfulfilled careers, Whitebrings a new clarity to the hopes and limitationsof European socialism between the two worldwars.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is twofold—to afford a broad survey of the Latin American countries, with the colour and interest which so strongly characterizes this half of the New World; and to offer in some degree a detailed study of the region as concerns what (elsewhere) I have ventured to term a "science of humanity" or science of corporate life, whose main factors are topographical, occupational or industrial, and ethical or ethical-economic. New responsibilities are arising in our dealings and contact with foreign lands, especially those whose social affairs are still backward. We must beware how we regard the folk of such lands mainly as hewers of wood and drawers of water, or absorbents of exported goods or producers of dividends, or their lands as mainly reservoirs of raw material. Elemental forces are at work in the world to-day, which only justice and constructive intelligence can control. The English-speaking peoples have wide interests and consequent responsibilities in these lands: matters which are discussed in the final chapter. As will be seen, I have embodied many descriptive passages in this book from the various authors of the South American Series, to which the present work is in a measure auxiliary.

The vast majority of books focus on the Anglo-German struggle, and ignore the dominant part played by the French, who for most of the war provided the bulk of the soldiers fighting against the central powers. As such, this important and timely book joins the small but growing collection of works offering an overdue assessment of the French contribution to the Great War. Drawing heavily on French primary sources the book has two main foci: it is both an in-depth battle narrative and analysis, as well as a work on the tactical evolution of the French army in Spring 1915 as it endeavored aggressively to come to grips with trench warfare. This period is of crucial importance as it was in these months that the French army learned the foundations of trench warfare on which their conduct for the remainder of the war would rest. The work argues that many advanced practices often considered German innovations - such as the rolling barrage, infiltration tactics, and the effective planning and integration of artillery bombardments - can all be traced back to French writing and action in early 1915. The work argues that - contrary to received opinion - French army bureaucracy proved effective at very quickly taking in, digesting and then disseminating lessons learned at the front and French commanders proved to be both effective and professional. Such radical conclusions demand a fundamental rethink of the way we view operations on the Western Front.
