Download or read book Losing Twice written by Emily M. Calhoun and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constitutional 'losers' represent a thorny and longstanding problem in American constitutional law. Given our adversarial system, the way that rights cases are decided means that regardless of whether a losing side has committed any actions that cause harm to others, they typically suffer unnecessary harm as a consequence of decisions. In areas such as affirmative action and gay rights, the losers are essentially punished for losing despite neither intending nor causing injury. In Losing Twice, Emily Calhoun draws upon conflict resolution theory, political theory, and Habermasian discourse theory to argue that in such cases, the Court must work harder to avoid inflicting unnecessary harm on Constitutional losers. But for this to happen, Calhoun contends, the role of judges needs to be reconceptualized. She contends that the Court should not perceive itself simply as an adversarial forum, but also as a 'transactional' one, where losers are not simply losers but participants in a process capable of addressing and ameliorating the effects that come with loss. Filled with lucid discussions of well known cases, Losing Twice offers an intellectually powerful argument for transforming the decision-making process in Constitutional rights disputes.
Download or read book Losing Mother Twice written by Regina Olson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of Losing Mother Twice know how incredibly difficult it is to watch a loved one lose herself. They watched their mother navigate the treacherous path of Alzheimer's disease for almost ten years. It was a journey set in place by plaques and tangles in her brain, and it lasted until she could no longer find her way through the brambled path. Others who also watch aging parents, failing spouses, or declining siblings struggle with dementia are not alone on the journey. This story of loss may be their story as well. The nature of the disease a family is up against becomes clearer once they face the enormity of the problem. Clarity, however, is not so easy to achieve when in the thick of it . . . as the disease is taking a mother away from them in slow motion . . . even while her physical body survives . . . even though she no longer knows who they are . . . even when she can no longer say, "I'm ready. I don't know why the good Lord doesn't take me." What the authors have learned about facing Alzheimer's disease results not only from their lived experience but also from their study of dementia. The authors share answers to important questions: What is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer's? How does one deal with a loved one when dementia causes behavior changes. What are the children's chances of inheriting the disease? Why does a person with Alzheimer's remember words to her favorite hymns and yet does not remember her children's names? This engaging story about family makes complex information accessible by placing discussion of dementia within the context of their mother's life-one person among the millions afflicted by the common tragedy that is Alzheimer's disease. A discussion guide for book clubs is included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[An] essential study of a previously unexplored chapter of the game’s history. An important addition to baseball collections...." Library Journal, Starred Review The gripping story of how one of the most infamous scandals in American history—the Black Sox scandal—continued for nearly a year following the fixed World Series of 1919 until the truth began to emerge. The Black Sox scandal has fascinated sports fans for over one hundred years. But while the focus has traditionally been on the fixed 1919 World Series, the reality is that it continued well into the following season—and members of the Chicago White Sox very likely continued to fix games. The result was a year of suspicion, intrigue, and continued betrayal. In Double Plays and Double Crosses: The Black Sox and Baseball in 1920, Don Zminda tells the story of an unforgettable team and an unforgettable year in baseball and American history. Zminda reveals in captivating detail how the Black Sox scandal unfolded in 1920, the level of involvement in game-fixing by notable players like Shoeless Joe Jackson and Buck Weaver, and the complicity of White Sox management in covering up details of the scandal. In addition, Zminda provides an in-depth investigation of games during the 1920 season that were likely fixed and the discovery during the year of other game-fixing scandals that rocked baseball. Throughout 1920, the White Sox continued to play—and usually win—despite mistrust among teammates. Double Plays and Double Crosses tells for the first time what happened during this season, when suspicion was rampant and the team was divided between “clean” players and those suspected of fixing the 1919 World Series.
