Book excerpt: La observación del contexto actual del arte y su enseñanza, del interés espontáneo y generalizado mostrado por jóvenes artistas de todo el mundo por terminar su formación artística, ya a nivel profesional, acudiendo a intensivos Talleres de Arte Actual, nos llevó a plantearnos la necesidad de investigar el por qué de esta preferencia de los alumnos por el taller, como modalidad para la formación artística. El interés por el tema creció con el descubrimiento de la aparición en la escena artística mundial de otro nuevo espacio, los Artists Studio Residences, que se une a los Talleres de Arte Actual, en su función de revitalizar y actualizar la idea tradicional del taller como lugar para la formación profesional de los artistas. La definición de taller que tenemos en cuenta en esta investigación lo identifica con un lugar para la enseñanza experimental del arte y para la producción artística en grupo, donde se encuentran el profesor y un conjunto de alumnos, fruto de una adopción recíproca (en un primer momento son los alumnos los que eligen al profesor, más tarde ser seleccionados por éste). El maestro-profesor utiliza su experiencia y sus conocimientos como artista, en activo profesionalmente, como materia para la enseñanza, y los alumnos se van formando a través la observación del proceso de creación y el apoyo del artista-maestro-profesor. Suponen un encuentro privilegiado donde los artistas se relacionan y colaboran entre sí, compartiendo motivaciones, entusiasmos y métodos de trabajo, utilizando como material para la innovación de su obra personal el potencial acumulado en este intercambio entre colegas.En esta investigación se estudian las características de los talleres dirigidos por artistas profesionales desde el Renacimiento, destacando ejemplos significativos que nos ayudan a entender cómo ha evolucionado el hecho del taller a lo largo de estos siglos; la relación entre el maestro-profesor y el aprendiz-alumno y las diferentes metodologías de enseñanza artística que se han utilizado. Aunque existen diferencias evidentes, que analizamos a lo largo de la investigación (hay épocas de la historia, en los siglos XVIII, XIX y XX en las que en el taller no hay intervención de los jóvenes artistas en la producción artística colectiva del taller), el taller siempre ha surgido de la necesidad de creación de un ambiente activo y estimulante, donde la acción creadora fuera la norma. Son centros de convivencia entre artistas (maestros-profesores y aprendices-alumnos) basados en el aprendizaje directo, la acumulación de técnicas y conocimientos, y la interacción entre las enseñanzas del profesor y las influencias mutuas entre los alumnos y éste. Como conclusión entendemos que los Talleres de Arte Actual y los Artists Studio Residences del siglo XXI son los herederos del espíritu de los talleres del Renacimiento. Dirigidos a la capacitación profesional de jóvenes artistas, ofreciéndose como lugares para la producción colectiva e individual de obra de arte y para la instrucción artística, centrados en los problemas y necesidades, nuevas y de siempre, de formación y producción artística.
