Pese a los avances que han promovido, la igualdad de género dista de ser una realidad plena en Europa y el resto del mundo. Las mujeres siguen especializadas en los trabajos de cuidados, lo que condiciona su autonomía y su inclusión en el ámbito laboral y político. ¿En qué medida los estados de bienestar europeos, a través de las políticas públicas y su giro neoliberal, han sido cómplices de la persistencia de la división sexual del trabajo y del desigual reparto de responsabilidades entre mujeres y hombres? ¿Cuál ha sido la influencia del modelo de la mujer-madre y sus discursos maternalistas en las desigualdades que afectan a las mujeres? ¿Es posible concebir una sociedad democrática sin plantearse la democratización de la familia ni la corresponsabilidad y socialización de los cuidados? ¿Cómo abordan estas cuestiones los distintos debates feministas? Si bien las políticas públicas pueden ser un instrumento para la transformación de los roles de género y del modelo de sociedad, no todas las políticas públicas tienen el mismo alcance ni todas son diseñadas con estos fines. Los permisos por nacimiento son una de las piedras de toque para calibrar la repercusión de dichas políticas en materia de igualdad. Siguiendo la evolución de estos permisos en más de 25 países europeos, Carmen Castro analiza tanto los enfoques y tendencias como los efectos que han tenido sobre el comportamiento masculino en las sociedades europeas y aporta pistas para vislumbrar, en el actual contexto de crisis, qué nuevos escenarios se abren para la (des)igualdad.

Technological modernization has gone hand-in-hand with the reshaping of old identities and the emergence of new ones. The transformation of Latin America has been shaped by social movements and political conflicts. The neoliberal model that dominated the first stage of the transformation induced widespread inequality and poverty, and triggered social explosions that led to its own collapse. A new model, neo-developmentalism, emerged from these crises as national populist movements were elected to government in several countries. The more the state intervened in the economy, the more it became vulnerable to corruption, until the rampant criminal economy came to penetrate state institutions. Upper middle classes defending their privileges and citizens indignant because of corruption of the political elites revolted against the new regimes, undermining the model of neo-developmentalism. In the midst of political disaffection and public despair, new social movements, women, youth, indigenous people, workers, peasants, opened up avenues of hope against the background of darkness invading the continent.
