Otros poemas of 1907, to the writings of his alter-ego Juan de Mairena of the 1930s, Machado endeavoured to explain how the Other became a concern for the self. In The Poetics of Otherness in Antonio Machado’s “Proverbios y cantares,” Nicolás Fernández-Medina examines how Machado’s “Proverbios y cantares,” a collection of short, proverbial poems spanning from 1909 to 1937, reveal some of the poet’s deepest concerns regarding the self-Other relationship. To appreciate Machado’s organizing concept of otherness in the “Proverbios y cantares,” Fernández-Medina argues how it must be contextualized in relation to the underlying Romantic concerns that Machado struggled with throughout most of his oeuvre, such as autonomy, solipsism and skepticism of absolutes. In The Poetics of Otherness in Antonio Machado’s “Proverbios y cantares,” Fernández-Medina demonstrates how Machado continues a practice of “fragment thinking” to meld the poetic and the philosophical, the part and whole, and the finite and infinite to bring light to the complexities of the self-Other relationship and its relevance in discussions of social and ethical improvement in early twentieth-century Spain.

Subjectivity, within its own codes, must seek a profound ethics, not puritanical but which serves to escape from general ill will. Santob offers a criticism of wealth and power that does not serve the people which appears to be totally relevant today. In spite of the fame he achieved in his own time, Santob has largely remained a vestige of the past. By the end of this book, readers will come to see why this important figure deserves to be more widely studied. Indeed, not only has this medieval Spanish philosopher searched for truth in an unstable, confused world of contradictions, but he has done so in a way that can still help us today.

The patterns of evidential use (and non-use) found in these languages are attributed to contextual, cultural and grammatical factors that motivate the adoption of an 'epistemological stance' - a concept that owes much to recent trends in Cognitive Linguistics. These pressures are further complicated by the grammatical and pragmatic conventions that are particular to each language. Book excerpt: Portraying Authorship argues that the medieval Castilian writer Juan Manuel fashioned a seemingly modern authorial persona from the accumulation and synthesis of medieval authorial roles. In the manuscript culture of medieval Castile and across Latin Europe, writers typically referred to their work in ways that corresponded to their role in the bookmaking process: scribes took credit for preserving the works of others, compilers for combining disparate texts in productive ways, commentators for explaining obscure works, and authors for writing their own words. Combining literary analysis with book history, Anita Savo reveals how Juan Manuel forged his authorial persona, “Don Juan,” by adopting all four medieval writerly roles, thereby reaping the ethical benefits of each one. Each chapter in Portraying Authorship highlights a different authorial role to show how Don Juan – and others who wrote in his name – assumed responsibility for that role and adapted its rhetoric to his vernacular literary project. The book concludes that Don Juan’s authorial self-portrait not only gave the humanist writers of the fifteenth century a model to imitate, but also persuaded subsequent scribes, editors, and translators to portray him as an individual author. In doing so, Portraying Authorship illuminates how Juan Manuel’s concept of authorship helped to secure him a privileged position in narratives of Spanish literary history.
