Download or read book The Beagle Conflict written by Antonio Luis Sapienza Fracchia and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2024-03-31 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated with over 150 original photographs of the personalities, aircraft, ships and ground forces from Argentina and Chile during the conflict. The Beagle Channel lies at the southernmost tip of South America and sovereignty over a number of islands there was hotly disputed between Argentina and Chile for much of the twentieth century. Navigation rights to this channel connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans were of considerable strategic value. In 1978, this dispute came within hours of breaking into large-scale open warfare between the two nations at sea, in the air and on land as Argentina launched Operación Soberanía (Operation Sovereignty). Argentina’s plans involved far more than just seizing a few barely inhabited islands, however, and intended to strike deep into Chile in several locations along the length of the border between the two nations. In return, Chile planned to counterattack into northern Argentina to seize territory to be held as a bargaining chip for future negotiations. The plans of these two nations, with Argentina controlled by its Military Junta and Chile under the dictatorship of General Pinochet, threatened to draw in their Latin American neighbours. The Beagle Conflict: Argentina And Chile On The Brink Of War Volume 2 1978-1984 provides a detailed examination of the militaries of Argentina and Chile at the time of the 1978 confrontation, of their plans and deployments for war, and of the negotiations and settlement through the offices of the Vatican that ultimately settled this dispute. This volume also examines further military developments up to 1984 as tensions between the Latin American neighbours eased. The volume is illustrated with over 150 original photographs of the personalities, aircraft, ships and ground forces of the two nations, maps showing the plans for war, and specially commissioned colour artworks.
Download or read book Carlos Castaneda Oportunismo Acad mico Y Los Psiqued licos A os Sesenta written by Jay Courtney Fikes and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Carlos Castaneda's books are accepted as truthful by millions of Spanish speakers, probably because most of them have not read this Spanish translation of Professor Fikes' book, Carlos Castaneda, Academic Opportunism and the Psychedelic Sixties. Dr. Fikes published this book in 1993 in Canada, after completing years of research in Mexico and the United States. Now two Spaniards, Juan Samper and Lourdes Escario, have translated Fikes' book without payment, convinced that it is valuable for everybody. Carlos Castaneda's central claim, to have learned sorcery from an elderly Yaqui Indian named don Juan Matus, is contradicted by Professor Jay Fikes' evidence. Fikes'

This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

With judicious commentary by several of the leading experts in the field, this book dramatically expands the canon of texts used to study the black Atlantic and the African diaspora, and captures the tenor of the 'black voice' as it collectively engaged the power of colonial institutions. In no uncertain terms, Afro-Latino Voices will prove to be a remarkable pedagogical tool and an influential resource, inspiring deeper comparative work on the African diaspora. --Ben Vinson III, Center for Africana Studies, Johns Hopkins University

Download or read book Indigenous Agency in the Amazon written by Gary Van Valen and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest group of indigenous people in the Bolivian Amazon, the Mojos, has coexisted with non-Natives since the late 1600s, when they accepted Jesuit missionaries into their homeland, converted to Catholicism, and adapted their traditional lifestyle to the conventions of mission life. Nearly two hundred years later they faced two new challenges: liberalism and the rubber boom. White authorities promoted liberalism as a way of modernizing the region and ordered the dismantling of much of the social structure of the missions. The rubber boom created a demand for labor, which took the Mojos away from their savanna towns and into the northern rain forests. Gary Van Valen postulates that as ex-mission Indians who lived on a frontier, the Mojos had an expanded capacity to adapt that helped them meet these challenges. Their frontier life provided them with the space and mind-set to move their agricultural plots and cattle herds, join independent indigenous groups, or move to Brazil. Their mission history gave them the experience they needed to participate in the rubber export economy and the politics of white society. Van Valen argues that the indigenous Mojos also learned how to manipulate liberal discourse to their advantage. He demonstrates that the Mojos were able to survive the rubber boom, claim the right of equality promised by the liberal state, and preserve important elements of the culture they inherited from the missions.

The willingness to share his findings inspired another breakthrough: participatory exhibitions, spaces where everyone could explore and play with sound. François Baschets conception of acousticsa method of understanding the functional relations between form, matter, action and soundnot only gave rise to the invention of hundreds of Sound Sculptures of all sizes and sonority, which can be found all over the world, but also led François and his brother to collaborate with personalities such as Jean Cocteau, Pierre Schaeffer and ToruTakemitsu. François Baschet relates a funny collection of stories about the artistic life in Paris and New York in 40s and 60s. This reissue of The Sound Sculptures of Bernard and François Baschet includes fragments still unpublished when the first edition appeared, and incorporates the original text of the Organologie des Structures Sonores Baschet (written by the two brothers), with Spanish translations.
