Book Handbook of Human and Planetary Health

Download or read book Handbook of Human and Planetary Health written by Walter Leal Filho and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a set of papers which explore the subject matter of human and planetary health at various angles The year 2015 was a special year in the field of human and planetary health. In that year, the report, produced by the Rockefeller Foundation and the journal The Lancet, called “Safeguarding human health in the Anthropocene epoch: report of The Rockefeller Foundation-Lancet Commission on planetary health” was launched. Also in 2015, the World Health Organization and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity published the report “Connecting global priorities: biodiversity and human health: a state of knowledge review” with over 100 contributors, meant to guide future joint actions. Both documents comprehensively address the need for a better understanding of the connections between human health and ecosystems and the risks associated with damages to the integrity of the planet. The period in which humanity finds itself right now, the Anthropocene, is a risk one since mankind is putting the planet under considerable pressure. These elements have led to the emergence of a new field of research, namely planetary health. Planetary health seeks to address a very concrete and urgent contemporary problem, namely the need to understand, quantify, and act in order to reverse the effects of human population growth and the acceleration of socioeconomic activities on the environment and, inter alia, the disturbances in the Earth's natural ecosystems and how these, in turn, impact human health and well-being. Anthropic disturbances in natural ecosystems are characterized by changes in climate, land use, changes in the nitrogen and phosphorus cycle, chemical pollution of soil, water and air, reduction in the availability of drinking water, loss of biodiversity, destruction of the ozone layer, and ocean acidification, among others. In all these areas, there is a perceived need to document and promote examples of initiatives and good practice, which may change current trends. This book addresses this need. It documents experiences, case studies, and projects which explore the connections between human and planetary health and illustrates examples which show the consequences of ecosystemic disturbances to the health and well-being of humanity, with the emergence of new diseases, worsening of infectious diseases and increase in chronic non-communicable diseases related to the deterioration of the current food system, hyper-urbanization, microbial resistance, climate-led migration and zoonoses, among others. Planetary health is a new effort to deal with the question of sustainability and human life on the planet under an increasingly integrative, transdisciplinary, and global perspective, since the problems of this planetary crisis cross geopolitical borders and academic boundaries and affect humanity as a whole. This book provides a contribution to this emerging field. Thanks to its design and the contributions by experts from various areas, it provides a welcome contribution to the literature on planetary health, and it inspires further works in this field.

Capítulo I. Introducción: innovación, buena regulación y prevención de la corrupción (Juli Ponce Solé y Agustí Cerrillo i Martínez). Capítulo II. Book excerpt: A creative and comprehensive exploration of the institutional forces undermining the management of environments critical to public health. For almost two decades, the citizens of Western Mexico have called for a cleanup of the Santiago River, a water source so polluted it emanates an overwhelming acidic stench. Toxic clouds of foam lift off the river in a strong wind. In Sewer of Progress, Cindy McCulligh examines why industrial dumping continues in the Santiago despite the corporate embrace of social responsibility and regulatory frameworks intended to mitigate environmental damage. The fault, she finds, lies in a disingenuous discourse of progress and development that privileges capitalist growth over the health and well-being of ecosystems. Rooted in research on institutional behavior and corporate business practices, Sewer of Progress exposes a type of regulatory greenwashing that allows authorities to deflect accusations of environmental dumping while “regulated” dumping continues in an environment of legal certainty. For transnational corporations, this type of simulation allows companies to take advantage of double standards in environmental regulations, while presenting themselves as socially responsible and green global actors. Through this inversion, the Santiago and other rivers in Mexico have become sewers for urban and industrial waste. Institutionalized corruption, a concept McCulligh introduces in the book, is the main culprit, a system that permits and normalizes environmental degradation, specifically in the creation and enforcement of a regulatory framework for wastewater discharge that prioritizes private interests over the common good. Through a research paradigm based in institutional ethnography and political ecology, Sewer of Progress provides a critical, in-depth look at the power relations subverting the role of the state in environmental regulation and the maintenance of public health.

Book Uniformity and Fragmentation of the 1999 Montreal Convention on International Air Carrier Liability

Download or read book Uniformity and Fragmentation of the 1999 Montreal Convention on International Air Carrier Liability written by Cyril-Igor Grigorieff and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1999 Montreal Convention is the most recent in-force treaty to regulate several important aspects of international air carrier liability in a uniform manner. This book examines in detail to what extent the 1999 Montreal Convention’s aim of uniformity has been achieved. To this end, it scrutinizes the exact scope of this aim and analyses the factors that may have prevented it from being fully achieved. It studies the wording of the treaty and its predecessors, their travaux préparatoires, the judicial decisions of numerous civil and common law jurisdictions, as well as various other interpretative tools. Among many others, themes addressed in this study include: exclusivity; the autonomy of terms used; translation issues; accident; bodily injury; damage; delay; consumer rights; the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties; hermeneutics; the Warsaw System; regional air law (including EU Regulation 261/2004); and algorithms. The study also suggests ways to reduce the fragmentation of the 1999 Montreal Convention with a series of directly applicable recommendations, and an analysis of what Artificial Intelligence could mean for the future. This book, which is intended to be practical, is aimed at all lawyers well-versed in aviation law as well as aviation enthusiasts. They will find it a useful tool for interpreting the 1999 Montreal Convention in a manner consistent with its ambition, as well as recent case law from all continents on hot topics.

Book Introduction to Spanish Private Law

Download or read book Introduction to Spanish Private Law written by Teresa Rodriguez de las Heras Ballell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topics addressed in this book have traditionally been covered in separate publications on civil and commercial law. This dualism of regimes has made it difficult for students and professionals alike to comprehend Spanish private law as a whole. In the past this has led to inefficient duplication of explanations, gaps in key areas and an altogether fragmented picture. Introduction to Spanish Private Law presents a consolidated, modern, and realistic image of today’s Spanish private legal system. It combines both civil and commercial law and integrates them in the same book, making the overall subject far more accessible to readers. This united approach results in a more logical and efficient process of learning. Finally the issues that are addressed reflect the reality of today’s economic and legal scene. This book attempts to provide the readers with the necessary legal instruments to tackle the real problems arising from a globalized modern society. The general principles in this book are presented from a practical point of view that emanates from the authors’ conception of a legal system as an instrument to solve social problems in accordance with a set of principles, values and aims.

Book Latin America and international investment law

Download or read book Latin America and international investment law written by Sufyan Droubi and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America has been a complex laboratory for the development of international investment law. While some governments and non-state actors have remained true to the Latin American tradition of resistance towards the international investment law regime, other governments and actors have sought to accommodate said regime in the region. Consequently, a profusion of theories and doctrines, too often embedded in clashing narratives, has emerged. In Latin America, the practice of international investment law is the vivid amalgamation of the practice of governments sometimes resisting and sometimes welcoming mainstream approaches; the practice of lawyers assisting foreign investors from outside and within the region; and the practice of civil society, indigenous peoples and other actors in their struggle for human rights and sustainable development. Latin America and international investment law describes the complex roles that governments have played vis-à-vis foreign investors and investments; the refreshing but clashing forces that international organizations, corporations, civil society, and indigenous peoples have brought to the field; and the contribution that Latin America has made to the development of the theory and practice of international investment law, notably in fields in which the Latin American experience has been traumatic: human rights and sustainable development. Latin American scholars have been contributing to the theory of international investment law for over a century; resting on the shoulders of true giants, this volume aims at pushing this contribution a little further.
