Book The Iconography and Ritual of iva at Elephanta

Download or read book The Iconography and Ritual of iva at Elephanta written by Charles D. Collins and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1988-11-10 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beautiful rock-cut Siva temple on Elephanta Island in Bombay Harbor is one of the finest monuments of Indian religion and art. Until now, interpretation of its magnificent sculptured scenes has been neglected. In this book, Collins systematically surveys the pertinent Vedic, Epic, and early Puranic literature as well as the contributions of India's foremost poet and dramatist, Kalidasa, to reveal sources for and interpretations of the subjects of the relief sculptures. This survey shows strong associations with areas formerly controlled by the classical Gupta dynasty in northern India. This book provides the first detailing of this link, intimated by others before, which helps to explain the grandeur of style found in the colossal reliefs. By applying certain aspects of ritual texts of the Lakulisa-Pasupata, the sect that probably used Elephanta originally, exceptional clarity is revealed for the worship of the sculptures in a counterclockwise sequence, quite unusual in India, but appropriate to this particular sect. Lakulisa-Pasupata texts are invoked in Collins' theory of how the cave-temple at Elephanta was used. This area of investigation has been virtually untouched by other scholars for any early Hindu shrine in India.

Book The Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Emotions in Classical Indian Philosophy

Download or read book The Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Emotions in Classical Indian Philosophy written by Maria Heim and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-08 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a rich variety of premodern Indian texts across multiple traditions, genres, and languages, this collection explores how emotional experience is framed, evoked, and theorized in order to offer compelling insights into human subjectivity. Rather than approaching emotion through the prism of Western theory, a team of leading scholars of Indian traditions showcases the literary texture, philosophical reflections, and theoretical paradigms that classical Indian sources provide in their own right. The focus is on how the texts themselves approach those dimensions of the human condition we may intuitively think of as being about emotion, without pre-judging what that might be. The result is a collection that reveals the range and diversity of phenomena that benefit from being gathered under the formal term “emotion”, but which in fact open up what such theorisation, representation, and expression might contribute to a cross-cultural understanding of this term. In doing so, these chapters contribute to a cosmopolitan, comparative, and pluralistic conception of human experience. Adopting a broad phenomenological methodology, this handbook reframes debates on emotion within classical Indian thought and is an invaluable resource for researchers and students seeking to understand the field beyond the Western tradition.

Book Statistical Analysis of Folk Songs of Jharkhand

Download or read book Statistical Analysis of Folk Songs of Jharkhand written by Shivani Tiwari and published by Sanctum Books. This book was released on 2022-10-16 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Folk songs play a very significant role in Indian classical music as the root of Indian classical music is the Indian folk music itself. Different states have different folk songs. This work deals with the statistical analysis of the folk songs of Jharkhand. Each song's analysis concerns with verifying whether the probabilities of notes in the song are fixed throughout the song or are the note probabilities varying. This tells us whether the probability distribution followed by the notes is multinomial or quasi multinomial respectively. Statistical parameterization method is used to quantify melody and rhythm. The presence of rhythm and melody is also analyzed by the Inter Onset Interval (IOI) and note duration graphs. The book should be found useful by music researchers and students of music and musicology, ethnomusicologists and music enthusiasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Bhagavad Gītā is an acknowledged treasure of world spiritual literature, few people know a parallel text, theĪśvara Gītā. This lesser-known work is also dedicated to a god, but in this case it is Śiva, rather than Kṛṣṇa, who is depicted as the omniscient creator of the world. Andrew J. Nicholson's Lord Śiva's Song makes this text available in English in an accessible new translation. A work of both poetry and philosophy, the Īśvara Gītā builds on the insights of Patañjali's Yoga Sūtra and foreshadows later developments in tantric yoga. It deals with the pluralistic religious environment of early medieval India through an exploration of the relationship between the gods Śiva and Viṣṇu. The work condemns sectarianism and violence and provides a strategy for accommodating conflicting religious claims in its own day and in our own.
