Book Life of Lord Kitchener

Download or read book Life of Lord Kitchener written by George Arthur and published by Cosimo Classics. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 1150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sweeping 1920 biography of Horatio Herbert Kitchener, better known as Lord Kitchener, Sir George Arthur shines a bright light on the British military leader and statesman who, during World War I, organized armies on an unprecedented scale and became famous as the face on British recruitment posters. Originally published as a three-volume set, it is presented here in an omnibus edition. Volume I covers Kitchener's birth in Ireland in 1850 to his placement as commander-in-chief of the Boer War in 1900. Volume II continues with his years in India, his pro-consulship in Egypt, and his departure for England in 1914 on the eve of World War I. Volume III documents his many campaigns and recruitment efforts during World War I until his dramatic death at sea in 1916. Written only four years after his death, this valuable historical account by a friend and contemporary offers a look behind the handlebar mustache and pointing finger of the man whose "Your country needs YOU" posters later inspired those of the United States during World War II. British writer SIR GEORGE ARTHUR (1860-1946) also wrote A Septuagenarian's Scrapbook, Not Worth Reading, and the three-volume Life of Lord Kitchener.

Download or read book Kitchener s Army written by Peter Simkins and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2007-08-30 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numbering over five million men, Britain's army in the First World War was the biggest in the country's history. Remarkably, nearly half those men who served in it were volunteers. 2,466,719 men enlisted between August 1914 and December 1915, many in response to the appeals of the Field-Marshal Lord Kitchener. How did Britain succeed in creating a mass army, almost from scratch, in the middle of a major war ? What compelled so many men to volunteer ' and what happened to them once they had taken the King's shilling ? Peter Simkins describes how Kitchener's New Armies were raised and reviews the main political, economic and social effects of the recruiting campaign. He examines the experiences and impressions of the officers and men who made up the New Armies. As well as analysing their motives for enlisting, he explores how they were fed, housed, equipped and trained before they set off for active service abroad. Drawing upon a wide variety of sources, ranging from government papers to the diaries and letters of individual soldiers, he questions long-held assumptions about the 'rush to the colours' and the nature of patriotism in 1914. The book will be of interest not only to those studying social, political and economic history, but also to general readers who wish to know more about the story of Britain's citizen soldiers in the Great War.

Book Kitchener s Last Volunteer

Download or read book Kitchener s Last Volunteer written by Dennis Goodwin and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-01-31 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Allingham is the last British serviceman alive to have volunteered for active duty in the First World War and is one of very few people who can directly recall the horror of that conflict. In Kitchener's Last Volunteer, he vividly recaptures how life was lived in the Edwardian era and how it was altered irrevocably by the slaughter of millions of men in the Great War, and by the subsequent coming of the modern age. Henry is unique in that he saw action on land, sea and in the air with the British Naval Air Service. He was present at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 with the British Grand Fleet and went on to serve on the Western Front. He befriended several of the young pilots who would lose their lives, and he himself suffered the privations of the front line under fire. In recent years, Henry was given the opportunity to tell his remarkable story to a wider audience through a BBC documentary, and he has since become a hero to many, meeting royalty and having many honours bestowed upon him. This is the touching story of an ordinary man's extraordinary life - one who has outlived six monarchs and twenty-one prime ministers, and who represents a last link to a vital point in our nation's history.

Book excerpt: Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl of Khartoum and of Broome, was Britain's last great military hero. his face became known to millions before his death in 1916 because it appeared on the recruiting posters of World War I over the caption 'Your Country Needs You'. Kitchener's ambition was all for his country. His qualities were evident in the campaigns in Sudan and South Africa. His belief that British influence was good and that the strengthening and extension of British influence was essential for world harmony. Appointed as Secretary of State for War to organize the British Army in World War I he was almost alone in saying the war would not be over by Christmas but would last 3-4 years with untold casualties. Philip Warner has written a lucid and exceptional book, with the full consent of Kitchener's family to their exclusive archive. Indeed in the initial reviews it was said 'this story has been told before but never so well'.

Book Lord Kitchener

Download or read book Lord Kitchener written by Henry D. Davray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lord Kitchener: His Work and His Prestige When he was appointed Commander in-chief of the Egyptian Army, he summoned his new Staff and addressed them in the following words: You have six months in which to learn Arabic. Those who do not know it in that time will have to go. At the end of the six months all his officers spoke the language of the country fluently. A strong will, a clear head, and also, it should be said, an uncommon apt ness in judgment, gave him the authority and the prestige which he used at the outbreak of war in making that appeal to England to which the country responded with so huge an impulse. Book Memoirs of My Services in the World War 1917 1918

Download or read book Memoirs of My Services in the World War 1917 1918 written by George Catlett Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George C. Marshall was an American military leader, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, and the third Secretary of Defense. Once noted as the "organizer of victory" by Winston Churchill for his leadership of the Allied victory in World War II, Marshall served as the United States Army Chief of Staff during the war and as the chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. As Secretary of State, his name was given to the Marshall Plan, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. He drafted this manuscript while he was in Washington, D.C., between 1919 and 1924 as aide-de-camp to General of the Armies John J. Pershing. However, given the growing bitterness of the "memoirs wars" of the period he decided against publication, and the draft sat unused until the 1970s when Marshall's step-daughter and her husband decided to publish it.
