Book excerpt: David Thompson is a former Vietnam War conscientious objector in Paris on a quest to find himself in the early days of 1977. When he befriends an Iranian and an Afghan and is invited to return with them to their countries, his quest slowly becomes a descent into his own personal hell. On the road from Europe to the East he encounters Kurdish bandits in the eastern mountains of Turkey, becomes involved with an underground group opposed to the Shah in Iran, escapes to Afghanistan, and later suffers extreme sickness on the streets of Delhi and Calcutta. Although continually searching for the happiness and identity he could not find in the U.S., he cannot easily shed his American past. Throughout the journey he is hounded by the demons of memory, particularly that of his father, a World War Two hero who disowned David and died while David was still in prison. The journey itself becomes a physical manifestation of his struggle to achieve reconciliation with his own conscience.

Book excerpt: "Witty, wise, and disarmingly tender. I am hopelessly devoted to this summer dream of a book." —Becky Albertalli, New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda The guy of her dreams... or the girl in her heart? Lara's had eyes for exactly one person throughout her three years of high school: Chase Harding. He's tall, strong, sweet, a football star, and frankly, stupid hot. Oh, and he's talking to her now. On purpose and everything. Maybe...flirting, even? No, wait, he's definitely flirting, which is pretty much the sum of everything Lara's wanted out of life. Except she’s haunted by a memory. A memory of a confusing, romantic, strangely perfect summer spent with a girl named Jasmine. A memory that becomes a confusing, disorienting present when Jasmine herself walks through the front doors of the school to see Lara and Chase chatting it up in front of the lockers. Lara has everything she ever wanted: a tight-knit group of friends, a job that borders on cool, and Chase, the boy of her literal dreams. But if she's finally got the guy, why can't she stop thinking about the girl? Dahlia Adler's Cool for the Summer is a story of self-discovery and new love. It’s about the things we want and the things we need. And it’s about the people who will let us be who we are.

It's summer once again on idyllic Sullivan's Island, but Eudora, or Dora as she's affectionately called by her family, is feeling anything but perfect. With a perpetually withdrawn son and an impending divorce, the pressure is just too much to handle, and Dora cracks, suffering what the doctors are calling 'Broken Heart' syndrome. Mamaw, Lucille, Harper, and Carson all rally around Dora to support her and nurse her back to health--however, it seems Dora isn't the only one falling apart this summer. Between Lucille's health scare and an unexpected surprise that has Carson reconsidering her life's direction, it looks like all the women of Sullivan's Island could use some TLC. When Sullivan's is hit with a tropical storm, it will be up to the three sisters to band together and weather the tempest together--both the one outside their windows, and the raging sea of emotions within each one of them" --

Book Looking for Daylight

Download or read book Looking for Daylight written by Arthur H. Derosier and published by Virtualbookworm Publishing. This book was released on 2003-12 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can or will a university/college president bring to the office an educational philosophy developed during turbulent times, or must he start afresh in a demanding, controversial position? Arthur DeRosier faced leadership choices during three college presidencies covering a quarter of a century. He brought to those presidencies a youth that spanned the Depression and World War II, experiences gained through four years in the U.S. Air Force including the Korean Conflict, college education in Mississippi and South Carolina, and history professorships, and administrative skills gained over 21 years (1956-77) at six institutions of higher learning in four states. In "Looking For Daylight," DeRosier explores the belief system he brought to the president's office, the problems encountered along a 25 year journey at three different colleges that required academic skills and patience to develop a graduate program at a regional university, and, then, to play a leadership role in saving two fine private liberal arts colleges from extinction. In so doing, the author examines the role past experiences and an ever-evolving academic philosophy played in avoiding the death of two colleges, while diversifying institutional beliefs and activities in the ever-changing and always challenging world of higher education.
