Book excerpt: "Your new name is John Apparite." So begins the odyssey of ex-FBI agent John Apparite, recruited by an enigmatic man he knows only as the "Director" into the most powerful and secret espionage program in U.S. history. Apparite soon finds himself battling mobsters blackmailing FBI head J. Edgar Hoover, and then disrupting a Soviet KGB plot to steal vital U.S. missile-fuel secrets in London. Yet the toughest adversary the young "Superagent" must face is perhaps the most elusive and dangerous one of all: himself. Why does John Apparite, who has long kept himself at an emotional distance from his fellow man, start feeling human again, even as he takes the lives of so many others? Can this basically decent young man from the Maryland backwoods, who is also the world's biggest Washington Senators baseball fan, reconcile himself with the cruel nature of his duty? And who is this mysterious person he calls the "Director"?I. Michael Koontz was born in 1963, and is a medical professional living in the Midwest with his wife and two young daughters.

Book excerpt: This book takes its title from the momentous decision of the Icelandic law-giver, Thorgeir, in AD 1000, to adopt Christianity as the island's official religion. According to tradition, this was taken as he lay "under a cloak", presumably seeking inspiration from his, pagan, deities. First published in 1979, the present edition expands its discussion of the background to this peacable adoption of the new faith, and its growth under succeeding generations. The author shows how tolerance and pragmatism were early features of the Icelandic church.
Download or read book Jersey Folklore Superstitions Volume Two written by G. J. C. Bois and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-06-04 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in two volumes, the purpose of Jersey Folklore & Superstitions is three-fold: To bring all the previously published and any non-published material on Jersey folktales and superstitions together in one publication, to expand on the detail of this material and to place it in context by comparing it with similar or more complete traditions from the Gulf of St. Malo as a whole (Guernsey, Normandy and Brittany) and to consider its functions and origins. To this end they are further compared with traditions from Europe generally, with some examples from further afield and with mythologies worldwide. For Jersey readers this work will give an overview of their oral tradition, its significance and how it relates to the body of such traditions within Europe as a whole. For general readers the use of the Islands traditions as a template for those elsewhere, the process of comparison with those from other regions and the attempt to outline the broad range of sources from which they are drawn, may give an insight into particular areas of folk tradition generally, such as fairy-lore, indigenous sorcery (witchcraft), domestic superstition and the roles and origins of spectral animals and other beings. For this purpose, most chapters are broadly divided into four main sections. The Jersey material is presented first, followed by that from Guernsey, Normandy and Brittany, followed by an analysis using examples from further afield and from mythology. Each chapter concludes with a review and summary of this material. Liberal quotations of related ditons or sayings in Jrriais (the Jersey Language) are included with each chapter. The author has four previous publications; Jersey Superstitions in Etching & Poetry (hardcover 1981), An Introduction to Channel Islands Pewter (softcover 1993), Jersey Maritime Folklore (M/S format, 1996) and Sunbonnets in the Channel Islands & worldwide (CD-R 2005).

Download or read book Red Seas Under Red Skies written by Scott Lynch and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 2007-07-31 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his highly acclaimed debut, The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch took us on an adrenaline-fueled adventure with a band of daring thieves led by con artist extraordinaire Locke Lamora. Now Lynch brings back his outrageous hero for a caper so death-defying, nothing short of a miracle will pull it off. After a brutal battle with the underworld that nearly destroyed him, Locke and his trusted sidekick, Jean, fled the island city of their birth and landed on the exotic shores of Tal Verrar to nurse their wounds. But even at this westernmost edge of civilization, they can’t rest for long—and are soon back to what they do best: stealing from the undeserving rich and pocketing the proceeds for themselves. This time, however, they have targeted the grandest prize of all: the Sinspire, the most exclusive and heavily guarded gambling house in the world. Its nine floors attract the wealthiest clientele—and to rise to the top, one must impress with good credit, amusing behavior…and excruciatingly impeccable play. For there is one cardinal rule, enforced by Requin, the house’s cold-blooded master: it is death to cheat at any game at the Sinspire. Brazenly undeterred, Locke and Jean have orchestrated an elaborate plan to lie, trick, and swindle their way up the nine floors…straight to Requin’s teeming vault. Under the cloak of false identities, they meticulously make their climb—until they are closer to the spoils than ever. But someone in Tal Verrar has uncovered the duo’s secret. Someone from their past who has every intention of making the impudent criminals pay for their sins. Now it will take every ounce of cunning to save their mercenary souls. And even that may not be enough.… Praise for Red Seas Under Red Skies “Lynch hasn’t merely imagined a far-off world, he’s created it, put it all down on paper—the smells, the sounds, the people, the feel of the place. The novel is a virtuoso performance, and sf/fantasy fans will gobble it up.”—Booklist (starred review) “Red Seas Under Red Skies firmly proves that Scott Lynch isn’t a one-hit wonder. . . . It’ll only be a matter of time before Scott Lynch is mentioned in the same breath as George R. R. Martin and Steven Erikson.”—Fantasy Book Critic “Grand, grandiose, grandiloquent . . . No critic is likely to fault Lynch in his overflowing qualities of inventiveness, audacious draftsmanship, and sympathetic characterization.”—Locus

Book excerpt: Name's Vicki Graves. I'm a demon hunter. If you need me, it's already too late. I hunt vamps, witches, demons. Pretty much anything that goes bump in the night. You got a demonic pest? I'm your gal to kill it. I ain't picky. I'll take it out or die trying. But this time, this case, it might be the answer to my prayers. If it's not the death of me. This case is personal, you see. I didn't want to believe that after all these years I might find out what happened to my family. Chase and Johnnie uncovered new evidence. Said it would give me closure. I wasn't keen, to be honest. Nobody wants to open up that sort of wound for inspection, but they were adamant. They worry about me. Which is exactly why I'm facing down a seethe of vamps in a dirty, out of town garage. And I half expected that, really. What I didn't expect? To be doing it with nothing to protect myself but my sexy high heel boots and a crumpled piece of paper. keywords: vampire fiction, urban fantasy series, vampire hunter, urban fantasy, dark fantasy, supernatural mystery, urban fantasy mystery, urban fantasy books, urban fantasy action adventure, urban fantasy paranormal, urban fantasy book one, urban fantasy short reads, urban fantasy vampire, urban fantasy witch, books like supernatural, fantasy novella, strong female characters

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is based on the required reading list of Yale Department of Classics. Originally designed for students, this anthology is meant for everyone eager to know more about the history and literature of this period, interested in poetry, philosophy and rhetoric of Ancient Rome. Latin literature is a natural successor of Ancient Greek literature. The beginning of Classic Roman literature dates to 240 BC. From that point on, Latin literature would flourish for the next six centuries. Latin was the language of the ancient Romans, but it was also the lingua franca of Western Europe throughout the Middle Ages. Consequently, Latin Literature outlived the Roman Empire and it included European writers who followed the fall of the Empire, from religious writers like Aquinas, to secular writers like Francis Bacon, Baruch Spinoza, and Isaac Newton. This collection presents all the major Classic Roman authors, including Cicero, Virgil, Ovid and Horace whose work intrigues and fascinates readers until this day. Content: Plautus: Aulularia Amphitryon Terence: Adelphoe Ennius: Annales Catullus: Poems and Fragments Lucretius: On the Nature of Things Julius Caesar: The Civil War Sallust: History of Catiline's Conspiracy Cicero: De Oratore Brutus Horace: The Odes The Epodes The Satires The Epistles The Art of Poetry Virgil: The Aeneid The Georgics Tibullus: Elegies Propertius: Elegies Cornelius Nepos: Lives of Eminent Commanders Ovid: The Metamorphoses Augustus: Res Gestae Divi Augusti Lucius Annaeus Seneca: Moral Letters to Lucilius Lucan: On the Civil War Persius: Satires Petronius: Satyricon Martial: Epigrams Pliny the Younger: Letters Tacitus: The Annals Quintilian: Institutio Oratoria Juvenal: Satires Suetonius: The Twelve Caesars Apuleius: The Metamorphoses Ammianus Marcellinus: The Roman History Saint Augustine of Hippo: The Confessions Claudian: Against Eutropius Boethius: The Consolation of Philosophy Plutarch: The Rise and Fall of Roman Supremacy: Romulus Poplicola Camillus Marcus Cato Lucullus Fabius Crassus Coriolanus Cato the Younger Cicero
