Download or read book Looking Back an autobiography of my childhood in North Central Iowa written by Paul Assink and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-04-15 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cleaning the udders of muddy cows in the spring...putting up with temperamental cows who liked to kick, being stampeded and nearly trampled upon by hungry hogs you were trying to feed, castrating squirming pigs who squealed at the top of their lungs...all these things were the unpleasant necessities associated with farm work in my youth. Field work was much more pleasant and, for the most part, even enjoyable. Plants were generally predictable and seldom uncooperative; the dirt of the field was much cleaner than the manure of the barnyard; and the open field less confining than the barn or the hog pen..." Paul has a unique gift for storytelling.Throughout this book along the historical backdrop of the 1930's, Paul brings us back to that place in North Central Iowa, into the world of a young boy, and later, a high school student. His delightful recollections are a pleasure to read and cultivate a sense of appreciation for what our forefathers experienced in their lives during those special times.
Download or read book My Iowa Journey written by Philip G. Hubbard and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Hubbard's life story begins in 1921 in Macon, a county seat in the Bible Belt of north central Missouri, whose history as a former slave state permeated the culture of his childhood. When he was four his mother moved her family 140 miles north to Des Moines in search of the greater educational opportunity that Iowa offered African American students. In this recounting of the effects of that journey on the rest of his life, Phil Hubbard merges his private and public life and career into an affectionate, powerful, and important story. Hubbard graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in electrical engineering in 1946; by 1954 he had received his Ph.D. in hydraulics. The College of Engineering extended a warm academic welcome, but nonacademic matters were totally different: Hubbard was ineligible for the housing and other amenities offered to white students. Intelligent, patient, keenly aware of discrimination yet willing to work from within the university system, he advanced from student to teacher to administrator, retiring in 1991 after decades of leadership in the classroom and the conference room. Hubbard's major accomplishments included policies that focused on human rights; these policies transformed the makeup of students, faculty, and staff by seeking to eliminate discrimination based on race, religion, or other nonacademic factors and by substituting affirmative action for the traditional old-boy methods of selecting faculty and administrators. At the same time that he was advancing the cause of human rights and cultural diversity in education, his family was growing and thriving, and his descriptions of home life reveal one source of his strength and inspiration. The decades that Hubbard covers were vital in the evolution of the nation and its educational institutions. His dedication to the agenda of public higher education has always been matched by his sensitivity to the negative effects of discrimination and his gentle perseverance toward his goals of inclusion, acceptance, and fairness. His vivid personal and institutional story will prove valuable at this critical juncture in America's racial history.

Download or read book A Country in the Mind written by John L. Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this beautifully written account, John Thomas details an intimate portrait of the intellectual friendship between two commanding figures of western letters and the early environmental movement--Wallace Stegner and Bernard DeVoto.. The authors of enormously popular works--Stegner most well known for his novels The Big Rock Candy Mountain and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Angle of Repose and DeVoto for his classic history of western exploration, The Course of Empire--they also played important roles in the efforts to stop government and private interests from carving up the vanishing West. Part of the fractious group of public intellectuals at Harvard that included Edmund Wilson, Mary McCarthy, and Arthur Schlesinger, Sr., they saw no contradiction between their literary and political selves and entered the public debate with conviction and passion. Drawing on their writings, personal correspondence, and dozens of articles from the pages of Harper's, where DeVoto was a columnist for years, this illuminating account demonstrates how their concerns for the western environment continue to resonate today.
