Book excerpt: Crying is a typical human expression of emotion. Surprisingly, until now little scientific attention has been devoted to this phenomenon. Many textbooks on emotion fail to pay attention to it, and in scientific journals there are hardly any contributions focusing on this behavior. In contrast, there is much interest from the lay public, allowing pseudo-scientists to formulate theories that have little or no scientific basis. Is there any evidence in support of statements that crying is healthy or that not crying may result in toxification? How do people react to the crying of others? Is crying important for the diagnosis of depression, and if so, how? This book aims to fill this gap in scientific literature. Crying is discussed from several perspectives and specific attention is given to methodological issues and assessment. Each chapter provides a review and a summary of the relevant scientific literature.

Book excerpt: Winner of the prestigious Azorín Prize for Fiction, the best-selling novel about love, sacrifice, and Picasso's mistress, Dora Maar. A writer resembling Zoé Valdés—a Cuban exile living in Paris with her husband and young daughter—is preparing a novel on the life of Dora Maar, one of the most promising artists in the Surrealist movement until she met Pablo Picasso. The middle-aged Picasso was already the god of the art world's avant-garde. Dora became his lover, muse, and ultimately, his victim. She became The Weeping Woman captured in his famous portrait, the mistress he betrayed with other mistress-muses, and their affair ended with her commitment to an asylum at the hands of Picasso's friends. The writer's research centers on a mysterious trip to Venice that Dora took fifteen years later, in the company of two young gay men who were admirers of Picasso, including the biographer James Lord. After this episode, Dora cut off contact with the world and secluded herself in her Paris apartment until her death. "After Picasso, God," she would say. What happened in Venice? The more the writer investigates, the more she finds herself implicated in a story of passion taken to the extremes. In The Weeping Woman, prize-winning novelist Zoé Valdés narrates the journey of a woman who would do anything and everything for love. Book excerpt: A compelling gothic fairytale by bruja and award-winning writer Maria DeBlassie. The women of Sueño, New Mexico don't know how to live a life without sorrows. That's La Llorona's doing. She roams the waterways looking for the next generation of girls to baptize, filling them with more tears than any woman should have to hold. And there's not much they can do about the Weeping Woman except to avoid walking along the riverbank at night and to try to keep their sadness in check. That's what attracts her to them: the pain and heartache that gets passed down from one generation of women to the next. Mercy knows this, probably better than anyone. She lost her best friend to La Llorona and almost found a watery grave herself. But she survived. Only she didn't come back quite right and she knows La Llorona won't be satisfied until she drags the one soul that got away back to the bottom of the river. In a battle for her life, Mercy fights to break the chains of generational trauma and reclaim her soul free from ancestral hauntings by turning to the only things that she knows can save her: plant medicine, pulp books, and the promise of a love so strong not even La Llorona can stop it from happening. What unfolds is a stunning tale of one woman's journey into magic, healing, and rebirth.

Book excerpt: The Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania is an area rich in history, none of which is more fascinating than in its origin. Settled not by the people of Pennsylvania, but rather of Connecticut due to conflicting land grants, it produced a titanic struggle between the Yankee settlers and Indians, British, Tories, and Pennamites, which stretched from the French and Indian War to well past the Revolutionary War. In these years many battles were fought, much blood was spilled; some say no area in America suffered more in proportion to population. Brother did turn against brother, and father did turn against son. Still, the settler stood fast, possessed by a spirit which in turn would conquer the American west. The Wyoming Valley did not sit on the fringes of the frontier but some sixty miles beyond it. These early pioneers carved out a settlement in the heart of a wilderness staunchly contested by people on all sides. Not only did they have to contend with the Indian threat, but with Pennsylvanians wishing to rid their northern borders of the Yankee intruders, and latter on when their firm support of the revolution became known, with the British Empire. Burned out, attacked from all sides, racked with betrayal from within their own numbers they stood fast in the face of impossible odds. Their spirit is a testament to the indomitable spirit of America. Their story is one of America. Read and discover within their struggle against the scalping knife and British Empire a great story, one that should never be forgotten, one that defines the American spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National commentators and social researchers have made Spitzer's The Politics of Gun Control a standard source for understanding America's gun control debate. The book has been widely heralded for its wide-ranging and fair-minded coverage of the national gun culture, the history and meaning of the Second Amendment, the criminological consequences of guns, the interest groups involved, public opinion, and the policy making roles of Congress, the presidency, and the bureaucracy. In the final chapter Spitzer convincingly proposes an innovative framework based on international relations and arms control to suggest a new way to proceed toward political accommodation on the gun control issue. New to the third edition of The Politics of Gun Control is coverage of the proliferation of concealed-carry laws in cities and counties. The book covers the debate and data on the effect of these laws on crime rates, homicide rates, gun-related violence and accidental deaths. School violence-including the shooting at Columbine High and other schools around the country's also explored including: the congressional response in the aftermath of these episodes; the Senate's passing of a historic juvenile justice bill requiring background checks for gun show purchases; tougher penalties for sale to juveniles or to felons; mandatory gun locks on new handguns; and a ban on import of high-capacity ammunition clips. Also new to this edition are discussions of the liability lawsuits filed against gun manufacturers by cities and counties; NRA political funding of Republicans in the 2000 election campaign and lobbying successes with the Bush administration; new activism by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (formerly Handgun Control); the Million Mom March (May 2000); and the expiration of 5-day waiting period for gun purchases in 1998; and the FBI's new computerized background check system.
