Download or read book Your Ideal Cat written by Benjamin L. Hart and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a happy relationship with your cat, go beyond the looks and make your pick based on demonstrated breed behavior. This is the advice of the Harts, two experts in animal communication and behavior, whose new book takes the process of selecting a cat to the next level by offering data-based behavioral profiles of a wide range of cat breeds. Developed over a lifetime of research and through extensive interviews with eighty veterinary experts, the profiles are presented in easy-to-use graphical form. A history of the development of different breeds is presented, and then breed-specific differences across a range of variables are discussed. These include twelve behavioral traits, in areas such as affection, sociality, activity level, and litter box use. After giving guidance about choosing a cat, the authors present some strategies for avoiding problem behaviors and resolving those that emerge. They also share fascinating theories about the origins of various common cat behaviors, including purring, yawning, eating grass, "flipping out" on catnip, and staking out territory. While the focus is on purebred cats, there is also lots of good information for owners of blends. The book ends with helpful guidance on further reading. Based on the latest science, this is a great book for anyone interested in the fundamental building blocks of feline behavior, and an invaluable handbook for cat owners.

Book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Oriental Shorthair and Longhair Cats

Download or read book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Oriental Shorthair and Longhair Cats written by Ross D. Clark DVM and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oriental shorthair evolved in the 1950s when breeders decided to produce solid color, tortoiseshell, tabby, ticked, shaded, smoke, parti-color, and any other combination Siamese. They are the distant progeny of the original hybrid crosses between the Siamese, Domestic shorthair, and Abyssinian. Like the Colorpoints, the Oriental shorthairs fraternal twin, they were slow to be recognized, since the Siamese breeders would not accept any other color than the original four. Finally, they could register with the CFA in 1972 and were granted championship status in 1977. In the 1970s, breeders crossed the Oriental shorthair with the Balinese, creating the Oriental longhair. Like the Balinese and Javanese, the Oriental longhair has a medium-length silky coat devoid of an undercoat, so it is easy to groom and does not mat. In 1988, the Oriental longhair was granted championship status by the CFA, and in 1995, the longhair and shorthair were combined into the Oriental breed with longhair and shorthair divisions. The Oriental shorthair may be out crossed with the Siamese or Colorpoint shorthair, and the Oriental longhair may be out crossed with these breeds, as well as the Balinese and Javanese. In 2014, the Oriental ranked thirteenth out of forty-three in CFA registrations.
