Book excerpt: C.S. Lewis enjoyed both stories and poetry. His narrative poems combine his gift in story-telling with his skills as a poet. The four pieces in this book are the only narrative poems by Lewis known to be in existence. The poems are full of Lewis's romantic imagination; they display his love and knowlege of classic mythology and his own mastery of the English language. Dymer (1926) - Launcelot (?early 1930s) - The Nameless Isle (1930) - The Queen of Drum (1938) 'Dymer' was begun by Lewis as a story in prose and the original idea had 'come to him' at the age of 17. It tells the story of a man who begets a monster. The monster kills his father and becomes a god. 'Launcelot' is based on the legend of King Arthur and the Holy Grail and 'The Nameless Isle' is the story of a shipwrecked mariner and his adventures on a magic island. 'The Queen of Drum' tells of an old pompous king and his young queen who eventually has to choose between heaven, hell and fairyland.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Longer Narrative Poems When we turn to the poems to study them a little with a view to a finer, more critical enjoy ment later, we must perceive, it would seem, first a general likeness and then the many differences, some in form and subject, and some of the manner of handling, which is apt to be the thing that gives us an idea of the character of the poet. These things are points of knowledge, certainly, and knowledge only of poetry is not the great thing true enjoyment is the really important matter. But such knowledge as this may be made the foundation of enjoyment, because it is pretty sure to bring out in our reading things which we shall enjoy and which we might otherwise neglect. • Pages : 124 pages

Download or read book Short Poems Long Tales written by Rashid Osmani and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-08 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry books are generally ignored, unless the poet is famous. By its very nature, poetry is tuned to emotions and feelings in a person. Very often, such feelings are transitionary, and they leave the reader without any residual meaning in their mind, after the reading is done. In this book, Short Poems, Long Tales, the poet conveys a message that is perhaps a bit more lasting. In a way it tries to modify the understanding process and make it more relevant to living in the 21st century. As we embark on a global culture, it's important to leave narrow views behind and look ahead. Discriminating people, other than ourselves, is very hurtful - more to them immediately and later in time to ourselves. Another parameter addressed is to gauge the actual passage of time. How it leaves us where we are, while it moves on by itself. Universal human instincts is another issue to be concerned about when sharing a heartfelt message. If not, it generally leads people to jump to false accusations when confronting others. The temper proposed by the author in this book is to deal with each other in the concept of live-and-let-live. Even if a message conveyed to us goes against our grain of thinking, it's better to let it rest for a while before pronouncing immediate opposition. The entire learning from this book of poetry is to enable a more thoughtful and understanding person, in a mildly witty and refreshing way.

Book Hotel Almighty

Download or read book Hotel Almighty written by Sarah J. Sloat and published by Sarabande Books. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visually arresting and utterly one-of-a-kind, Sarah J. Sloat's Hotel Almighty is a book-length erasure of Misery by Stephen King, a reimagining of the novel's themes of constraint and possibility in elliptical, enigmatic poems. Here, "joy would crawl over broken glass, if that was the way." Here, sleep is “a circle whose diameter might be small," a circle "pitifully small," a "wrecked and empty hypothetical circle." Paired with Sloat's stunning mixed-media collage, each poem is a miniature canvas, a brief associative profile of the psyche—its foibles, obsessions, and delights.

Book excerpt: The Decent Of Alette is a rich odyssey of transformation in the tradition of The Inferno. Alice Notley presents a feminist epic: a bold journey into the deeper realms. Alette, the narrator, finds herself underground, deep beneath the city, where spirits and people ride endlessly on subways, not allowed to live in the world above. Traveling deeper and deeper, she is on a journey of continual transformation, encountering a series of figures and undergoing fragmentations and metamorphoses as she seeks to confront the Tyrant and heal the world. Using a new measure, with rhythmic units indicated by quotations marks, Notley has created a "spoken" text, a rich and mesmerizing work of imagination, mystery, and power.

Book Persian Narrative Poetry in the Classical Era 800 1500 Romantic and Didactic Genres

Download or read book Persian Narrative Poetry in the Classical Era 800 1500 Romantic and Didactic Genres written by Mohsen Ashtiany and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume in this ground-breaking series, Persian Narrative Poetry in the Classical Era, 800-1500: Romantic and Didactic Genres, introduces masterpieces of Persian literature from these seven centuries to an international audience. In the process, it underlines the remarkable tenacity of their malleable tradition: the perennial dialogue and the interconnectedness which binds together a vast and varied literature composed of many threads, romantic and didactic, in many lands, from Anatolia and Iran to India and Central Asia. In its companion volume, Persian Lyric in the Classical Era, 800-1500, the readers of the series will have already met in passing all the mythical and historical figures who appear with far more aplomb on the stage here, with their lives narrated in detail by poets of different caliber from different perspectives. The first two chapters of this volume recount the literary history of the entire period, focusing on didactic and romantic narratives. The central chapters take a closer look at the towering figure of the poet Nezâmi Ganjavi. The final chapter takes the reader to a wider landscape tracing the footsteps of Alexander across the globe, offering insights to the cultural preoccupations refracted in so many versions past and present.

Book Notational Experiments in North American Long Poems 1961 2011

Download or read book Notational Experiments in North American Long Poems 1961 2011 written by A. J. Carruthers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a critical experiment that tracks the literary and poetic uses of musical notation and notational methods in North American long poems from the middle of last century to the contemporary moment. Poets have readily referred to their poems as “scores.” Yet, in this study, Carruthers argues that the integration of musical scores in expansive works of this period does more work than previously thought, offering both resolution and escape from the demands placed on long poem form. The five case studies, on Langston Hughes, Armand Schwerner, BpNichol, Joan Retallack and Anne Waldman, offer approaches to reading literary scores in what might be described as a critical stave or a critical “fugue” of instances. In differing ways, musical notation and notational methods impact the form, time and sometimes the ethical and political stances of these respective long poems.

Book The Poetry Handbook

Download or read book The Poetry Handbook written by John Lennard and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-01-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poetry Handbook is a lucid and entertaining guide to the poet's craft, and an invaluable introduction to practical criticism for students. Chapters on each element of poetry, from metre to gender, offer a wide-ranging general account, and end by looking at two or three poems from a small group (including works by Donne, Elizabeth Bishop, Geoffrey Hill, and Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott), to build up sustained analytical readings. Thorough and compact, with notes and quotations supplemented by detailed reference to the Norton Anthology of Poetry and a companion website with texts, links, and further discussion, The Poetry Handbook is indispensable for all school and undergraduate students of English. A final chapter addresses examinations of all kinds, and sample essays by undergraduates are posted on the website. Critical and scholarly terms are italicised and clearly explained, both in the text and in a complete glossary; the volume also includes suggestions for further reading. The first edition, widely praised by teachers and students, showed how the pleasures of poetry are heightened by rigorous understanding and made that understanding readily available. This second edition — revised, expanded, updated, and supported by a new companion website - confirm The Poetry Handbook as the best guide to poetry available in English.
