Book Innovative Korea

Download or read book Innovative Korea written by Hoon Sahib Soh and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Korea today is a highly industrialized, global leader in innovation and technology. It is the 10th largest economy in the world and has a per capita income approaching the average of OECD countries. In the 1950s, however, it was one of the world’s poorest countries, with decidedly bleak prospects. Its transformation has made Korea a well-known case study of successful development. Innovative Korea: Leveraging Innovation and Technology for Development summarizes the sources of Korea’s remarkable growth and the policies and institutional reforms that made it possible. The report focuses on Korea’s successful transition from a middle-income to a high-income economy. Korea escaped from the “middle-income trap†? by fundamentally transforming its growth paradigm to a more private-sector-led model emphasizing market competition, innovation, and technology. Compared to the previous emphasis on large fi rms and industries, the government became more focused on promoting small and medium enterprises and technology entrepreneurs. Exports expanded significantly through greater integration in global value chains. Already-high levels of human capital development were complemented by an expanded social safety net and a more integrated approach to education and training. Korea succeeded by focusing on the foundations of long-run growth, building global capabilities in innovation and technology, and adapting and evolving its growth paradigm to promote new sources of growth. Innovative Korea, jointly prepared by the World Bank and the Korea Development Institute, provides useful insights on Korea’s development story and practical lessons for public policy making.

Book From Firm Level Imports to Aggregate Productivity

Download or read book From Firm Level Imports to Aggregate Productivity written by Mr.JaeBin Ahn and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the Korean manufacturing firm-level data, this paper confirms that three stylized facts on importing hold in Korea: the ratio of imported inputs in total inputs tends to be procyclical; the use of imported inputs increases productivity; and larger firms are more likely to use imported inputs. As a result, we find that firm-level import decisions explain a non-trivial fraction of aggregate productivity fluctuations in Korea over the period between 2006 and 2012. Main findings of this paper suggest a possible link between the recent global productivity slowdown and the global trade slowdown.

Book Entry Exit and Aggregate Productivity Growth

Download or read book Entry Exit and Aggregate Productivity Growth written by Chin-hŭi Han and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using plant level panel data on Korean manufacturing during the 1990-98 period, this study tries to assess the role of entry and exit in enhancing aggregate productivity, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The main findings of this study are summarised as follows. First, plant entry and exit rates in Korean manufacturing seem quite high: they are higher than in both the United States and several developing countries for which comparable studies exist. Second, in line with existing studies on other countries, plant turnover reflects underlying productivity differentials in Korean manufacturing, with the "shadow of death" effect as well as selection and learning effects all present. Third, plant entry and exit account for as much as 45 and 65 per cent in manufacturing productivity growth during cyclical upturn and downturn, respectively. This study also shows that plant birth and death are mainly a process of resource reallocation from plants with relatively low and declining ...

Book The Plant level View of Korea s Growth Miracle and Slowdown

Download or read book The Plant level View of Korea s Growth Miracle and Slowdown written by Munseob Lee and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyze the evolution of the plant size distribution, static allocative efficiency, and business dynamism of the Korean manufacturing sector during its growth miracle (1967-2000) and the subsequent slowdown since 2000. The average plant size has an inverse-U pattern over time, uncorrelated with the level or the growth rate of value-added per worker. The measure of static misallocation decreases modestly until 1983, consistent with the fast economic growth, but increases substantially afterwards, without a corresponding negative trend in manufacturing productivity. These results are seemingly at odds with existing cross-country evidence on the relationship between plant size and economic development, as well as the one between static allocative efficiency and development. In addition, business dynamism, measured by either churning or responsiveness to shocks, diminished significantly since 2000, coinciding with the slowdown in manufacturing productivity. Our findings call for more systematic research on how economic growth correlates with establishment/firm size distribution and with static and dynamic allocative efficiency.

Book Growth and Productivity in East Asia

Download or read book Growth and Productivity in East Asia written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering the examples of Australia and the Pacific Rim, Growth and Productivity in East Asia offers a contemporary explanation for national productivity that measures contributions not only from capital and labor, but also from economic activities and relevant changes in policy, education, and technology. Takatoshi Ito and Andrew K. Rose have organized a group of collaborators from several Asian countries, the United States, and other parts of the globe who ably balance both macroeconomic and microeconomic study with theoretical and empirical approaches. Growth and Productivity in East Asia gives special attention to the causes for the unusual success of Australia, one of the few nations to maintain unprecedented economic growth despite the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the 2001 global downturn. A new database comprising eighty-four Japanese sectors reveals new findings for the last thirty years of sectoral productivity and growth in Japan. Studies focusing on Indonesia, Taiwan, and Korea also consider productivity and its relationship to research and development, foreign ownership, and policy reform in such industries as manufacturing, automobile production, and information technology.

Book Producer Dynamics

Download or read book Producer Dynamics written by Timothy Dunne and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Census Bureau has recently begun releasing official statistics that measure the movements of firms in and out of business and workers in and out of jobs. The economic analyses in Producer Dynamics exploit this newly available data on establishments, firms, and workers, to address issues in industrial organization, labor, growth, macroeconomics, and international trade. This innovative volume brings together a group of renowned economists to probe topics such as firm dynamics across countries; patterns of employment dynamics; firm dynamics in nonmanufacturing industries such as retail, health services, and agriculture; employer-employee turnover from matched worker/firm data sets; and turnover in international markets. Producer Dynamics will serve as an invaluable reference to economists and policy makers seeking to understand the links between firms and workers, and the sources of economic dynamics, in the age of globalization.

Book Aggregate Productivity Growth in Korean Manufacturing

Download or read book Aggregate Productivity Growth in Korean Manufacturing written by Minho Kim and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I measure aggregate productivity growth in manufacturing between 1995 and 2013 as defined by Petrin and Levinsohn (2012). I decompose aggregate productivity growth into technical efficiency improvements, resource reallocations, and net entry effects. I find that aggregate productivity growth slows down after 2004 and that the rapid drop in technical efficiency growth contributed most to the decline. In this paper, I focus on the role of young plants with regard to productivity growth of Korean manufacturing. I show that young plants account for nearly half of APG (48%), while their value-added share is 14 percent on average between 1995 and 2013. I find that productivity growth at young plants has been declining for the last ten years. The lower growth of continuing young plants contributes to this trend. These results stress the important role of young plants in aggregate productivity growth and imply that understanding the dynamics of young plants is necessary to form effective start-up policies.

Book What s the Big Deal

Download or read book What s the Big Deal written by Hojong Kang and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Korea has achieved striking economic success during last four decades, following the 1997-98 foreign exchange crisis, Korea's economy was in urgent need of restructuring amid a series of corporate bankruptcies and a paralyzing credit crunch. In this paper using an unpublished plant-level panel data set, I explore changes in total factor productivity and its growth before and after the crisis. In order to do so, I sort out eight industries that were most likely affected by the "Big Deal Program". The results suggest the Big Deal had a positive and significant effect on TFP levels. Bigger plants in Big Deal industries had differentially higher TFP levels However, these results are not robust to the bigger plants classified as being in the top 5% in terms of K/L ratio. Unlike the results for TFP levels, coefficient for the three variable interaction term (DiTt[arrow][tau] Spt) are all positive and significant with the plant-size specification. It means the bigger plants in eight Big Deal industries have more productivity growth even though they have lower TFP levels than the smaller plants after the reform. Depending on the plant-size specifications, the Big Deal program had a positive effect on the bigger plants in the Big Deal industries of 0.1 to 1.39 percents.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Industrial Hubs and Economic Development

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Industrial Hubs and Economic Development written by Arkebe Oqubay and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrialization supported by industrial hubs has been widely associated with structural transformation and catch-up. But while the direct economic benefits of industrial hubs are significant, their value lies first and foremost in their contribution as incubators of industrialization, production and technological capability, and innovation. The Oxford Handbook of Industrial Hubs and Economic Development adopts an interdisciplinary approach to examine the conceptual underpinnings, review empirical evidence of regions and economies, and extract pertinent lessons for policy reasearchers and practitioners on the key drivers of success and failure for industrial hubs. This Handbook illustrates the diverse and complex nature of industrial hubs and shows how they promote industrialization, economic structural transformation, and technological catch-up. It explores the implications of emerging issues and trends such as environmental protection and sustainability, technological advancement, shifts in the global economy, and urbanization.
