Book Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation

Download or read book Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation written by James M. Kelly and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely used in civil, mechanical and automotive engineering since the early 1980s, multilayer rubber bearings have been used as seismic isolation devices for buildings in highly seismic areas in many countries. Their appeal in these applications comes from their ability to provide a component with high stiffness in one direction with high flexibility in one or more orthogonal directions. This combination of vertical stiffness with horizontal flexibility, achieved by reinforcing the rubber by thin steel shims perpendicular to the vertical load, enables them to be used as seismic and vibration isolators for machinery, buildings and bridges. Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation collates the most important information on the mechanics of multilayer rubber bearings. It explores a unique and comprehensive combination of relevant topics, covering all prerequisite fundamental theory and providing a number of closed-form solutions to various boundary value problems as well as a comprehensive historical overview on the use of isolation. Many of the results presented in the book are new and are essential for a proper understanding of the behavior of these bearings and for the design and analysis of vibration or seismic isolation systems. The advantages afforded by adopting these natural rubber systems is clearly explained to designers and users of this technology, bringing into focus the design and specification of bearings for buildings, bridges and industrial structures. This comprehensive book: includes state of the art, as yet unpublished research along with all required fundamental concepts; is authored by world-leading experts with over 40 years of combined experience on seismic isolation and the behavior of multilayer rubber bearings; is accompanied by a website at www.wiley.com/go/kelly The concise approach of Mechanics of Rubber Bearings for Seismic and Vibration Isolation forms an invaluable resource for graduate students and researchers/practitioners in structural and mechanical engineering departments, in particular those working in seismic and vibration isolation.

Book Effect of Shape Factor on the Seismic Performance of Elastomeric Bearings

Download or read book Effect of Shape Factor on the Seismic Performance of Elastomeric Bearings written by Adam Talmage Neill and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastomeric bearings are increasingly becoming a design standard in the seismic isolation of large structures and buildings. The rubber bearings used in these designs are made of alternating layers of vulcanized natural or synthetic rubber and thin steel plates. These bearings are expensive to manufacture and are not applicable to smaller structures such as residential buildings. The idea of using inexpensive scrap-rubber tires for making base isolators for residential buildings has been proposed, but the performance of these bearings under seismic forces is not known. Shape factor is an aspect ratio term that is used in describing an elastomeric bearing's dimensional characteristics. Investigation into the performance of bearings with large shape factors has been extensive, but the performance of bearings with small shape factors has not been characterized. Theoretical modeling techniques employed for describing the behavior of rubber bearings with large shape factors are analyzed for the performance of bearings with small shape factors. Deflections of bearings with large shape factors are dominated by shear. As a bearing's shape factor decreases, the governing factor for the deflection changes from shear to bending. As the behavior of the bearing changes from shear to bending, different modeling techniques are necessary to analyze the system. The shape factor at which a bearing goes from shear to bending was established to be in the range of 0.15 to 0.30, which correlates well with theoretical predictions. It was additionally found that the theoretical modeling technique, used to describe the behavior of rubber in compression, is not adequate in predicting the performance of elastomeric bearings with small shape factors.

Book Mechanistic Model for Lead Rubber Bearings

Download or read book Mechanistic Model for Lead Rubber Bearings written by Dipesh Lalwani and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic isolation is a technique used to shift the fundamental period of a structure to a long range period which reduces the forces a structure attracts during a seismic event. Two, widely used bearings in seismic base isolation of structures are elastomeric and lead rubber bearings. A typical elastomeric bearing consists of a number of layers of rubber alternated with steel shims bonded between two rubber layers. The addition of a lead core inserted in a central mandrel hole results in a lead rubber bearing (LRB). The lead enhances the bearings energy dissipating in an earthquake event. When elastomeric or LRBs are simultaneously subjected to vertical compressive load and increasing lateral displacement, the shear force equilibrium path can exhibit a critical point, beyond which the bearing exhibits negative stiffness. Semi-empirical models to simulate this behavior for elastomeric and LRB have been developed in the past. These models rely on experimentally calibrated parameters, making them impractical for design. Recently, a particular mechanics based model, developed for an elastomeric bearing only, approaches the modelling using vertical springs and a simple bi-linear constitutive relationship to represent the rotational behavior of an elastomeric bearing. Overarching goal of the present study is to build on the mechanics based elastomeric model to develop a LRB model. The elastomeric model is modified to include hysteretic behavior of LRB and also uses a Newton type numerical solution technique to solve for response of the bearing. The model, proposed in this study, utilizing vertical springs approach has shown to be capable of simulating the strength, stiffness and hysteretic behavior of LRB well.

Book Thermal Degradation of the Performance of Elastomeric Bearings for Seismic Isolation

Download or read book Thermal Degradation of the Performance of Elastomeric Bearings for Seismic Isolation written by Ali Shirazi and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern about reliability of elastomeric bearings is increasing along with the rapid development in application of such devices. Studies on experimental and in-service bearings have revealed the occurrence of permanent and transient changes in engineering properties of these devices. This property loss, however, varies in quality and magnitude, depending on service or environmental conditions at which bearings are employed. Knowledge about the magnitude of the lost property and the rate of degradation is critical for the safe performance of the isolated structure. Availability of such measures helps avoid unnecessary cost and service interruptions of bridge structures by optimizing monitoring and maintenance activities. It is necessary to identify the service and environmental conditions contributing in such degradation phenomenon. A literature review does not indicate the availability of complete and comprehensive studies on this topic. The focus of this research study is to identify and quantify property loss of elastomeric bearings, particularly due to heat, when they are subjected to cyclic lateral load under different environmental conditions. This research also proposes a methodology for a precise and accurate prediction of the temperature profile within the body of an elastomeric bearing. This methodology can be incorporated with the existing numerical models to assess the adequacy of performance of such bearings through seismic events. The reversible changes in characteristics of lead plugs, which take place mainly due to heat, were found to represent the main sources of transient changes in characteristics of an elastomeric bearing. Elastomeric bearings are also subjected to irreversible degradations such as stiffening of bearings as a result of hardening of rubber as when they are exposed to high temperature. High temperature is the result of generation of heat through hysteresis action of lead plugs.
