Book Income Distribution And Economic Growth Of Japan Under The Deflationary Economy Theory And Evidence Based On An Econometric Analysis

Download or read book Income Distribution And Economic Growth Of Japan Under The Deflationary Economy Theory And Evidence Based On An Econometric Analysis written by Osamu Nakamura and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese economy has experienced a structural deflationary gap since the mid-1970s. Although the gap was decreasing in the bubble period, the deflationary economy has become more serious since the bursting of the bubble. Accordingly, this book attempts to examine the causes of the Japanese deflationary economy, characterized as a structural deflation and discusses how to alleviate the prolonged slowdown in order to restore Japan to a trajectory of high economic growth, with a special focus on the function of income distribution. In addition, not only income distribution flows but also accumulation of assets and debts in the household sector are taken into account for improving the prolonged economic stagnation of Japan by employing an econometric analysis with modeling and forecasting techniques. Furthermore, this book makes a long-term forecast of the Japanese economy, up to the fiscal year 2030, with policy scenario simulations in order to capture the long-term growth path of the Japanese economy and to analyze the effects of alternative policies on the economy.

Book Japan s Lost Decade

Download or read book Japan s Lost Decade written by Naoyuki Yoshino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses Japan’s long-term economic recession and provides remedies for that recession that are useful for other Asian economies. The book addresses why Japan’s economy has stagnated since the bursting of its economic bubble in the 1990s. Its empirical analysis challenges the beliefs of some economists, such as Paul Krugman, that the Japanese economy is caught in a liquidity trap. This book argues that Japan’s economic stagnation stems from a vertical “investment–saving” (IS) curve rather than a liquidity trap. The impact of fiscal policy has declined drastically, and the Japanese economy faces structural problems rather than a temporary downturn. These structural problems have many causes: an aging demographic (a problem that is frequently overlooked), an over-reliance by local governments on transfers from the central government, and Basel capital requirements that have made Japanese banks reluctant to lend money to start-up businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises. This latter issue has discouraged Japanese innovation and technological progress. All these issues are addressed empirically and theoretically, and several remedies for Japan’s long-lasting recession are provided. This volume will be of interest to researchers and policy makers not only in Japan but also the People’s Republic of China, many countries in the eurozone, and the United States, which may face similar challenges in the future.

Book Japan s New Economy

Download or read book Japan s New Economy written by Magnus Blomström and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-01-25 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan's economy stumbled in the 1990s. After four decades of rapid growth that transformed Japan into a wealthy country at the world's technological frontier, the last decade brought prolonged economic stagnation. The rapid run-up in asset prices in the late 1980s, followed by their collapse in the early 1990s, left a debt overhang that paralyzed the banking sector. Policy reforms were initially half-hearted, and businesses were slow to restructure as the global economy changed. The lagging economy has seemed impervious to aggressive fiscal stimulus measures and is still plagued by ongoing price deflation. Japan's struggle has called into question the ability of the country's economic institutions - originally designed to support factor accumulation and rapid development - to adapt to the new economic environment of the 21st century. Yet Japan's economy is already changing. Driven by an aging population, rapid technological change, and increasing global competition, the country's public and private institutions are being slowly reshaped. This volume explores the forces that will drive structural and institutional change in three areas over the next decade: the macroeconomy, the organization of industry, and the global economic and political environment. Economists, demographers, and Japan specialists examine key aspects of the economy that will be transformed in coming years, including population and savings, the public pension system, labor markets, financial reforms, deregulation of service industries, productivity performance, foreign investment, trade, and the impact of an emerging China. The volume fills an important gap in the existing economic literature. While much has been written about Japan's pre-1990s institutions and economic performance, this volume is unique in its forward-looking orientation - trying to understand not only the institutional and structural changes that have already reshaped Japan in the 1990s, but to identify the critical trends and institutional changes that will mould Japan's new economy over the next decade.

Book The Yo Yo Yen

Download or read book The Yo Yo Yen written by B. Brown and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-05-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The violent fluctuations of the Japanese yen through the 1980s and 1990s have played a critical role in Japan's economic decline. Brendan Brown highlights the causes of the yen's bizzare behaviour, and analyses the consequences for the Japanese and global economies. Through this analysis he presents an original hypothesis, linking the periodic sharp upswings of the Yen to poor economic performance and offers a new view as to where the responsibility for failure of the Japanese currency market to function normally lies.

Book excerpt: Japan’s dramatic transformation from economic success to economic stagnation offers important policy lessons to advanced countries everywhere that are struggling with stagnation. The term ‘Japanization’ is often used by economists to describe long-term stagnation and deflation. Symptoms include high unemployment, weak economic activity, interest rates near zero, quantitative easing, and population aging. In the global context, what can governments do to mitigate the downward trends experienced by Japan? This judiciously timed book investigates in depth the causes of Japan’s ‘lost decades’ versus the real recovery achieved by the United States, and the lessons that can be learned.

Book Planning Japan s Economic Future

Download or read book Planning Japan s Economic Future written by K. Sheridan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-05-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004 the Japanese economy was in a gravely depressed state, with little growth for nearly a decade. However, it would be wrong to call this period 'the lost decade' as many do. A better approach is to examine how a dynamic society, progressive in ways different from those which only generate growth in the GNP, has been built. This new economy pursues a new objective through new approaches, pursuing quality of life rather than raising the material standards of living.
