With the influence of global warming becoming apparent and extreme weather events occurring more frequently in the region, it is an important and urgent challenge to understand long-term environmental and ecosystem changes in forests and provide robust scientific knowledge on how ecosystems respond to those changes. This book is a step towards addressing the challenge. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Forest Research.

Book excerpt: Forest monitoring by terrestrial investigation has achieved a number of results in terms of infrastructure, enhanced international cooperation, development of methods, data, data quality, and capability to provide information. In addition, long-term monitoring data are increasingly requested by researchers and modelers. Despite these achievements, forest monitoring programs are facing increasing challenges related to a superimposed reduction in resources and a generalized loss of appeal and enthusiasm by policy and funding agencies. Although forest monitoring is a relatively young discipline, which has already evolved considerably, a further, rapid evolution is necessary. The next generation of monitoring programs should consider (i) identifying a wider range of users for monitoring information; (ii) expanding monitoring potential by means of connections with terrestrial and remotely based inventory, modeling, and research systems; (iii) adapting and further improving quality and coverage of data, information and reporting to fit specialized stakeholders; and (iv) enhanced global cooperation. Long-term commitment and financial support are necessary to secure continuity of operation, data collection, and maintenance of data series.

Under the Convention on Biological Diversity, international efforts have been made to achieve a significant reduction in the current rate of biodiversity loss. The loss continues, however. The Asia-Pacific region includes both developing countries with high biodiversity and developed countries with sophisticated data collection and analyses, but only limited information about the status quo of biodiversity in this region has been available. Many Asia-Pacific countries have rapidly grown their economies and social infrastructures, causing a loss of biodiversity and requiring an urgent mandate to achieve a balance between development and conservation in the region. In December 2009, scientists successfully organized the Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Observation Network in the region, to establish a network for research and monitoring of ecosystems and biodiversity and to build a cooperative framework. The present volume is the first collection of information on biodiversity in the Asia-Pacific and represents a quantum step forward in science that optimizes the synergy between development and biodiversity conservation.

Book excerpt: The growth of trees is a key ecological parameter of forests and thus of high importance as an indicator of forest condition in long-term forest monitoring. Forest growth can be easily and fairly inexpensively assessed on both intensive monitoring plots and large-scale plots. For intensive monitoring plots, we propose a hierarchical system of stem diameter measurements with simple manual growth assessments in regular multiannual intervals on all trees (periodic measurements), annual to weekly readings of permanently installed girth bands (permanent measurements) on a subset of trees, and electronically recorded dendrometer measurements with high-time resolution on a few selected trees (continuous measurements) for physiological measurements. For this, we describe possible plot layouts, sampling protocols for the trees, and measuring methods and instruments used, and give suggestions for data Quality Assurance, forest growth calculations, and data evaluations.
