Book Statistics for Long Memory Processes

Download or read book Statistics for Long Memory Processes written by Jan Beran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical Methods for Long Term Memory Processes covers the diverse statistical methods and applications for data with long-range dependence. Presenting material that previously appeared only in journals, the author provides a concise and effective overview of probabilistic foundations, statistical methods, and applications. The material emphasizes basic principles and practical applications and provides an integrated perspective of both theory and practice. This book explores data sets from a wide range of disciplines, such as hydrology, climatology, telecommunications engineering, and high-precision physical measurement. The data sets are conveniently compiled in the index, and this allows readers to view statistical approaches in a practical context. Statistical Methods for Long Term Memory Processes also supplies S-PLUS programs for the major methods discussed. This feature allows the practitioner to apply long memory processes in daily data analysis. For newcomers to the area, the first three chapters provide the basic knowledge necessary for understanding the remainder of the material. To promote selective reading, the author presents the chapters independently. Combining essential methodologies with real-life applications, this outstanding volume is and indispensable reference for statisticians and scientists who analyze data with long-range dependence.

Book Predictability and Nonlinear Modelling in Natural Sciences and Economics

Download or read book Predictability and Nonlinear Modelling in Natural Sciences and Economics written by J. Grasman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers in the natural sciences are faced with problems that require a novel approach to improve the quality of forecasts of processes that are sensitive to environmental conditions. Nonlinearity of a system may significantly complicate the predictability of future states: a small variation of parameters can dramatically change the dynamics, while sensitive dependence of the initial state may severely limit the predictability horizon. Uncertainties also play a role. This volume addresses such problems by using tools from chaos theory and systems theory, adapted for the analysis of problems in the environmental sciences. Sensitive dependence on the initial state (chaos) and the parameters are analyzed using methods such as Lyapunov exponents and Monte Carlo simulation. Uncertainty in the structure and the values of parameters of a model is studied in relation to processes that depend on the environmental conditions. These methods also apply to biology and economics. For research workers at universities and (semi)governmental institutes for the environment, agriculture, ecology, meteorology and water management, and theoretical economists.

Book Output and Employment Fluctuations

Download or read book Output and Employment Fluctuations written by Klaus F. Zimmermann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of four parts: I. Labour demand and supply, II. Productivity slowdown and innovative activity, III. Disequilibrium and business cycle analysis, and IV. Time series analysis of output and employment. It presents a fine selection of articles in the growing field ofthe empirical analysis of output and employment fluctuations with applications in a micro-econometric or a time-series framework. The time-series literature recently has emphasized the careful testing for stationarity and nonlinearity in the data, and the importance of cointegration theory. An essential part of the papers make use of parametric and non-parametric methods developed in this literature and mostly connect their results to the hysteresis discussion about the existence of fragile equilibria. A second set of macro approaches use the disequilibrium framework that has found so much interest in Europe in recent years. The other papers use newly developed methods for microdata, especially qualitative data or limited dependent variables to study microeconomic models of behaviour that explain labour market and output decisions.

Book Long Memory in Foreign Exchange Rates Revisited

Download or read book Long Memory in Foreign Exchange Rates Revisited written by Rolf Tschernig and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been recent evidence for long memory in the changes of foreign exchange spot rates that is captured by the fractionally integrated ARMA model. This paper extends these investigations in several directions. First, the estimation procedure allows for GARCH errors. Second, in addition to the total period from 1973 to 1990 three subperiods are analyzed. Third, for the US-Dollar spot rates of the Deutsche Mark and the Swiss Franc ARFIMA model selection and estimation results for various observation frequencies are compared to ARFIMA specifications and their parameter values that are obtained from temporal aggregation. As a result the evidence for weak long memory in the changes of US-Dollar exchange rates is confirmed. However, long memory appears to be a property attached to the US currency since the analysis of the Deutsche Mark/Swiss Franc spot rate changes does not reveal any long memory.

Download or read book Long Memory Processes written by Jan Beran and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-14 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-memory processes are known to play an important part in many areas of science and technology, including physics, geophysics, hydrology, telecommunications, economics, finance, climatology, and network engineering. In the last 20 years enormous progress has been made in understanding the probabilistic foundations and statistical principles of such processes. This book provides a timely and comprehensive review, including a thorough discussion of mathematical and probabilistic foundations and statistical methods, emphasizing their practical motivation and mathematical justification. Proofs of the main theorems are provided and data examples illustrate practical aspects. This book will be a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students in statistics, mathematics, econometrics and other quantitative areas, as well as for practitioners and applied researchers who need to analyze data in which long memory, power laws, self-similar scaling or fractal properties are relevant.
