With this new edition, at last it has the critical edition that it deserves. William Davies King provides students and theater artists with an invaluable guide to the text, including an essay on historical and critical perspectives; glosses of literary allusions and quotations; notes on the performance history; an annotated bibliography; and illustrations. "This is a worthy new edition, one that I'm sure will appeal to many students and teachers. William Davies King provides a thoughtful introduction to Long Day's Journey into Night—equally sensitive to the most particular and most encompassing of the play's materials."—Marc Robinson/DIV

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Long Day is a wonderfully readable personal narrative of the trials and tribulations of an "unskilled, friendless, almost penniless girl of eighteen, utterly alone in the world" who arrives in New York City in 1905 to earn her livelihood. The book reveals much about the lives of working women in early twentieth-century urban America- the sort of jobs available to women, the ethnic and demographic makeup of the female labor force, the harshness of the conditions, the less-than-satisfactory living arrangements, the physically demanding nature of the work, and the long working hours.

Book Finding the Way to Long Day s Journey Into Night

Download or read book Finding the Way to Long Day s Journey Into Night written by William Davies King and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eugene O’Neill wrote his most enduring and important plays after he won international acclaim as the first and only American playwright to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936. In the midst of the Great Depression, with his health failing and spirits sunk, he and his third wife, former actress Carlotta Monterey, moved to California to escape the materialism and commercialism of a declining “West,” and they built a new home called Tao House. A reasonably good translation of tao is “the way,” and in this house, which was largely the creation of Carlotta, he found the way to his most famous play, Long Day’s Journey Into Night. As an unusually explicit autobiographical drama, this play returns to 1912, the outset of O’Neill’s writing career, when he confronted tragedy in his family story and found a way to dramatize his mother, father, brother, and himself in a way that has resonated with audiences since its publication and production in 1956. But this book argues that the play originates as much in the moment of its creation, 1939–1941—in the family relationships, the historical circumstances, and the fact that this work would represent a moment of closure of his great career. Key to this heroic story of creation is the intervention of his wife, Carlotta, whose diaries enable a day-to-day observation of how the play was written. She was the driving force behind the design of Tao House, and she managed the rhythms and patterns of life within its architecture. It was her masterpiece, just as Long Day’s Journey was his. This book develops a close reading of their house and marriage and also uses many of O’Neill’s previous plays to illuminate the breakthrough of Long Day’s Journey. This book is the most granular and at the same time the most far-reaching inquiry into how this quintessential play was written (and almost not written) and how it came into the world.

Book Joshua s Long Day American Tectonic Plate Movements

This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prominent third century (BC) philosopher narrated the story of Atlantis using a phrase “it was destroyed in single day and night.” Upon the author’s search for physical evidence for Joshua’s Long Day, this phrase became a base for historical speculations about this issue: • Link between Atlantis’ Deluge and Joshua’s Long Day • Conspiracy about Atlantis’ existence-time • Atlantis’ Deluge by tectonic plate movements in Atlantic Ocean • Before 1405 BC, Central American region was at a navigable distance to Atlantis • Divergence of North and South American plates and subduction of Nazca and Cocoos plates • Sea floor spread in the mid-Atlantic ridge • African and Arabian plates stood for about a day, that is, Joshua’s Long Day • American Plates travelled with unusual speed leading to long day and long night occurrences Countless books, faith in God’s miraculous acts, research and conversations with noble persons helped the author arrive at a conclusion.

Book excerpt: Cut off, surrounded, and desperate, three WWII commandos wait for the chaos to begin in this “fiercely authentic” novel of combat (Sunday Telegraph). They were three soldiers, on watch in the French countryside, their base a disused barn. Three ordinary men seconded into the horrors of World War II, each with his own ideals, his own feelings, his own fears. Their task was a nightmare of waiting. German forces were stationed over the brow of a hill, and every moment of every day passed in nerve-shattering anticipation of their first clash. When the clash finally came, it was not merely a battle of force and brutality but a complex and murderous struggle between the cunning and ruthlessness of both sides . . . “Extraordinarily powerful . . . at times harrowing but always gripping. Its authenticity and credibility is rooted in the experience of the author, who led a commando unit in Occupied Europe during the Second World War. The story draws on his experiences in an unflinching manner, turning the fields, hills and hedgerows of the front line into the stage for a drama of the most compelling kind.” —Alex Gerlis, author of Prince of Spies “Tense and convincing.” —Observer “I think it’s the best thing of its kind I’ve ever read. I literally couldn’t put it down.” —Leslie Charteris, author of The Saint novels “A gripping read.” —The Sunday Times

Book Long Days Short Years

Download or read book Long Days Short Years written by Andrew Bomback and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How parenting became a verb, from Dr. Spock and June Cleaver to baby whispering and free-range kids. When did “parenting” become a verb? Why is it so hard to parent, and so rife with the possibility of failure? Sitcom families of the past—the Cleavers, the Bradys, the Conners—didn’t seem to lose any sleep about their parenting methods. Today, parents are likely to be up late, doomscrolling on parenting websites. In Long Days, Short Years, Andrew Bomback—physician, writer, and father of three young children—looks at why it can be so much fun to be a parent but, at the same time, so frustrating and difficult to parent. It’s not a “how to” book (although Bomback has read plenty of these) but a “how come” book, investigating the emergence of an immersive, all-in approach to raising children that has made parenting a competitive (and often not very enjoyable) sport. Drawing on parenting books, mommy blogs, and historical accounts of parental duties as well as novels, films, podcasts, television shows, and his own experiences as a parent, Bomback charts the cultural history of parenting as a skill to be mastered, from the laid-back Dr. Spock’s 1950s childcare bible—in some years outsold only by the actual Bible—to the more rigid training schedules of Babywise. Along the way, he considers the high costs of commercialized parenting (from the babymoon on), the pressure on mothers to have it all (and do it all), scripted parenting as laid out in How to Talk So Kids Will Listen, parenting during a pandemic, and much more.

Download or read book Por qu 101 Questions About Spanish written by Judy Hochberg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ¿Por qué? 101 Questions about Spanish is for anyone who wants to understand how Spanish really works. Standard textbooks and grammars describe the "what" of Spanish - its vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and pronunciation - but ¿Por qué? explains the "why". Judy Hochberg draws on linguistic principles, Hispanic culture, and language history to answer questions such as: Why are so many Spanish verbs irregular? - Why does Spanish have different ways to say "you"? - Why is h silent? - Why doesn't Spanish use apostrophes? - Why does Castilian Spanish have the th sound? Packed with information, guidance, and links to further research, ¿Por qué? is an accessible study guide that is suitable for Spanish students, instructors, native speakers, and the general reader. It is a valuable supplementary text for serious students of Spanish at all levels, from beginning to advanced. ¿Por qué? also covers topics usually left to specialized books, including the evolution of Spanish, how children and adults learn Spanish, and the status of languages that co-exist with Spanish, from Catalan to Spanish sign language to the indigenous languages of Latin America.
