Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: See London’s best photo routes, know all its sites and understand its history That is the essence of London Photo Route. London Photo Routes is a new way of seeing and interacting with London, where you will step into an experienced tour guide’s shoes and view London through their eyes. Become familiar with the location, identify what you are looking at, and understand its relevance to London’s historical past. Do this by having helpful visual and factual information at your fingertips. The tour focuses on key areas within central Westminster, taking you on a visual journey through some of London’s most famous sites, including Trafalgar Square, Horse Guards Parade, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, and Big Ben. The tour is split into 3 easy to navigate routes:- • Charing Cross to Admiralty Arch • Horse Guards Parade to Whitehall • St James’s Park to the Houses of Parliament Starting at Charing Cross Station, in the heart of London, the route goes toward Trafalgar Square via one of London’s oldest churches (St Martin-in the-Fields) and passes the National and Portrait Galleries. From there it travels through Admiralty Arch and The Mall, before turning left toward Horse Guards Parade. The route continues onto Whitehall, with its historic government buildings, before turning back towards St James's Park and the Churchill War Museum. The tour then heads off towards Westminster Abbey before finally culminating in Parliament Square, next to the Houses of Parliament, which is also known as the Palace of Westminster, as it was the monarch's principal residence from the 11th to the 16th century. On average, the route should take around an hour to complete, but could easily take longer if you wish to investigate the area in more detail.

  • ISBN : 0429767242
  • Pages : 248 pages

Download or read book Iconoclasm and the Museum written by Stacy Boldrick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iconoclasm and the Museum addresses the museum’s historic tendency to be silent about destruction through an exploration of institutional attitudes to iconoclasm, or image breaking, and the concept’s place in public display. Presenting a selection of focused case studies, Boldrick examines long-standing desires to deface, dismantle, obscure or destroy works of art and historic artefacts, as well as motivations to protect and display broken objects. Considering the effects of iconoclastic practices on artworks and cultural artefacts and how those practices are addressed in institutions, the book examines changing attitudes to the intentional destruction of powerful artworks in the past and present. It ends with an analysis of creative destruction in contemporary art making and proposes that we are entering a new phase for museums, in which they acknowledge the critical roles destruction and loss play in the lives of objects and in contemporary political life. Iconoclasm and the Museum will be important reading for academics and students in fields such as museum and gallery studies, archaeology, art history, arts management, curatorial studies, cultural studies, history, heritage and religious studies. The book should also be of great interest to museum professionals, curators and collections management specialists, and artists.

Book Printed Images in Early Modern Britain

Download or read book Printed Images in Early Modern Britain written by Michael Hunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Printed images were ubiquitous in early modern Britain, and they often convey powerful messages which are all the more important for having circulated widely at the time. Yet, by comparison with printed texts, these images have been neglected, particularly by historians to whom they ought to be of the greatest interest. This volume helps remedy this state of affairs. Complementing the online digital library of British Printed Images to 1700 (www.bpi1700.org.uk), it offers a series of essays which exemplify the many ways in which such visual material can throw light on the history of the period. Ranging from religion to politics, polemic to satire, natural science to consumer culture, the collection explores how printed images need to be read in terms of the visual syntax understood by contemporaries, their full meaning often only becoming clear when they are located in the context in which they were produced and deployed. The result is not only to illustrate the sheer richness of material of this kind, but also to underline the importance of the messages which it conveys, which often come across more strongly in visual form than through textual commentaries. With contributions from many leading exponents of the cultural history of early modern Britain, including experts on religion, politics, science and art, the book's appeal will be equally wide, demonstrating how every facet of British culture in the period can be illuminated through the study of printed images.
