Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London, Ontario in Colour Photos, Saving Our History One Photo at a Time is the subject of Book 1 in the Cruising Ontario series of books of photographs of towns and cities in Ontario. The photos show the architecture and design of old buildings, many that are over 100 years old. Descriptions of the buildings and background information with the pictures now in full colour add greatly to the book. It is a visual experience to enjoy. London is the home of Linda, a very good friend of Barbara's. In 1793 on the River Thames, Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe selected a site for the capital of Upper Canada. York (Toronto) became the seat of government, but in 1826 London was selected as the judicial and administrative centre of the London District. A courthouse and gaol (1829) and homes for the government officials were built, stores and hotels were opened. A British garrison stationed at London in 1838 stimulated its growth. The Thames River in southern Ontario begins near Tavistock and Mitchell and flows 273 kilometres southwest to Lake St. Clair. The river winds through Carolinian forests, farmlands, rural and urban communities.

Book The Cowkeeper s Wish

Download or read book The Cowkeeper s Wish written by Tracy Kasaboski and published by Douglas & McIntyre. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1840s, a young cowkeeper and his wife arrive in London, England, having walked from coastal Wales with their cattle. They hope to escape poverty, but instead they plunge deeper into it, and the family, ensconced in one of London’s “black holes,” remains mired there for generations. The Cowkeeper’s Wish follows the couple’s descendants in and out of slum housing, bleak workhouses and insane asylums, through tragic deaths, marital strife and war. Nearly a hundred years later, their great-granddaughter finds herself in an altogether different London, in southern Ontario. In The Cowkeeper’s Wish, Kristen den Hartog and Tracy Kasaboski trace their ancestors’ path to Canada, using a single family’s saga to give meaningful context to a fascinating period in history—Victorian and then Edwardian England, the First World War and the Depression. Beginning with little more than enthusiasm, a collection of yellowed photographs and a family tree, the sisters scoured archives and old newspapers, tracked down streets, pubs and factories that no longer exist, and searched out secrets buried in crumbling ledgers, building on the fragments that remained of family tales. While this family story is distinct, it is also typical, and so all the more worth telling. As a working-class chronicle stitched into history, The Cowkeeper’s Wish offers a vibrant, absorbing look at the past that will captivate genealogy enthusiasts and readers of history alike.

Book Agnes Macphail and the Politics of Equality

Download or read book Agnes Macphail and the Politics of Equality written by Terence Allan Crowley and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1990 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Passing years have only added new lustre to the figure of Agnes Macphail, Canada’s first woman MP. In this biography, Terry Crowley offers a heroine for our times with the depiction of Macphail the accomplished politician, the committed feminist and the complex, well-rounded witty human being. A democratic populist who emerged politically during the post-World War One farmers’ revolt, Macphail helped build the alliance that became the CCF party and ended the two major parties’ total domination of national political life. She later served the CCF as Ontario’s first woman MPP. In all her activities Macphail was an outspoken advocate of equality and human rights. She worked tirelessly to win recognition of women’s rights, to reform the nation’s penal system and to secure international peace. She pressed for controls on lobbying and for disclosure of business influences on the media. Strong convictions, openness to fresh ideas and devotion to democratic values were Macphail’s distinguishing characteristics."--Page 4 of cover.

Book The Art of Jeffrey Rubinoff

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Fox
  • Publisher : D & M Publishers
  • Release : 2016-09-03
  • ISBN : 1771621303
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book The Art of Jeffrey Rubinoff written by James Fox and published by D & M Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-03 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeffrey Rubinoff is one of the great sculptors in steel of the second half of the twentieth century. In the 1970s and '80s he exhibited widely in the United States and Canada alongside Anthony Caro, Mark di Suvero and George Rickey, among others. However, in the early 1990s Rubinoff withdrew from the art world altogether and concentrated on creating an extraordinary sculpture park on Hornby Island. This book is the first major account of his remarkable career. The Art of Jeffrey Rubinoff considers Rubinoff's life, work and ideas from a variety of perspectives. Barry Phipps describes Rubinoff's working methods; James Purdon examines the meanings that derive from Rubinoff's use of steel; Joan Pachner focuses on the formative influence of the abstract Expressionist sculptor David Smith on his work; Maria Tippett examines Rubinoff through the lens of the broader arts scene in postwar Canada; and Aaron Rosen attempts to understand Rubinoff's values and ambitions in light of his Jewish heritage. Other contributing scholars include Alistair Rider, Mark E. Breeze, Tom Stammers, Alexander Massouras, David Lawless and Peter Clarke. The book's foreword is written by the distinguished Yale historian Jay Winter. Drawing on interviews and correspondence with Rubinoff himself, as well as uncatalogued archives and unpublished documents in the artist's possession, The Art of Jeffrey Rubinoff makes available for the very first time a significant quantity of primary material, both textual and visual, for scholars and students of the future.
