Book Cigar Box Lithographs

Download or read book Cigar Box Lithographs written by Charles J. Humber and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-11-16 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CIGAR BOX LITHOGRAPHS: The Inside Stories Uncovered is a thought-provoking production exposing its readership to more than 160 vintage cigar boxes manufactured during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most convey stunning litho- graphs that portray prominent historical figures. Such cigar boxes during the 19th century attracted a massive smoking cliental numbering in the millions.... While puffers more than one hundred years ago likely recognized the prominent personalities peering at them from the inside labels of these wooden cigar boxes, those same headlined names, today, are now essentially erased from memory. Lew Wallace (1827- 1905), portrayed in this stunning portrait label, is virtually a forgotten name today. World-famous during his day, he was not only a Major General during the Civil War but became more famous when he wrote what some consider to be the best-selling novel of the 19th century. His Ben Hur (see page 34), a novel that was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster winning a record eleven Oscars in 1959, was certainly the most read and the best-known book title during the 20th century, that is, until it was superseded by Gone with the Wind in the 1930s. By examining the cartouche to the left of this stunning label portrait, one detects Wallace’s role as a General during the Civil War, especially at the Battle of Shiloh. The cartouche to the right of his portrait details his writing studio in Crawfordsville, Indiana. This is where his most famous novel was written. Cigar boxes from the past often became an educational platform inadvertently recording and preserving history. To this day, this nearly 120-year old collectible cigar container whispers its provocative past, that is, providing one takes time out to lift its lid and peer at the lithographic image waiting to be re-discovered or uncovered.... Peer long enough and the box just might whisper its past to you.

Book excerpt: When it comes to black gold in Oil Springs and Petrolia, Jack has seen it all. So, when the opportunity affords itself to share his tale of fortune and fame ... sorry, his role in the mid-1800's discovery of oil in Canada and the subsequent black gold rush in southwestern Ontario, he jumps at the chance. From the trials and tribulations of early efforts to drill for oil, to murder, back room deals, and American forays into the Canadian market, Jack seems to know it all. Or, at the very least, he knows someone who knows someone. And he certainly enjoys the attention... and the odd appreciative gesture of a beverage or two that his storytelling brings. But, Jack’s love for the ladies is second only to his penchant for embellishment, so it’s up to his partner, George, and the gorgeous Winsome to attempt to keep him on the straight and narrow. Sometimes they succeed, and sometimes... well, you’ll have to see for yourself.

Book Love Matters For Psychic Transformation

Download or read book Love Matters For Psychic Transformation written by Maja Reinau and published by Fisher King Press. This book was released on 2016-02-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love Matters for Psychic Transformation is woven by a profound respect and love for the soul and the transformative powers of the Body Psyche. It is an exploration of the embodied psychic transformation in the specific context of the BodySoul Rhythms® work (BSR) developed by Ann Skinner, Mary Hamilton, and Marion Woodman. In describing the BSR work, interviewing six women about their experiences, and linking the BSR approach with the new neuroscience, developmental psychology, change in therapy, attachment theory, and relational trauma, Dr. Reinau brings to light all that the BSR approach has to offer. It is with relief and pleasure that I write this endorsement. Relief comes because someone with clarity, accuracy, and care has outlined the “consonants” of the work of BSR. Pleasure because the “vowels” of the work have been explored in an authentic voice from an open heart, with a keen intelligence, and from several well-studied points of view. Once again Maja Reinau has put on her diving costume, gone down, and this time surfaced with the pearl: Love Matters in Psychic Transformation. Thank you Maja. –Ann Skinner, co-creator of Body Soul Rhythms Love Matters For Psychic Transformation is a gift to the many women who have benefited from the BSR-work. Dr. Reinau is able to delve deeply into the methodology of BodySoul work without destroying the mystery. It is a treasure of information for those who seek this way of transformation in their lives. The interviews deepen the mystery as well as the understanding of the work. Dr. Reinau’s ability to link BodySoul experience to early developmental theories and to neuroscience provides the path to her conclusion that it is all about love. A conclusion with which I am sure Marion Woodman would agree. Everyone who seriously considers understanding BodySoul work should read Love Matters for Psychic Transformation. –Patricia C.
