Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logic for the Million The object of the following pages is to supply the general reader with a simple text-book on logic. There are, it is true, several elementary manuals already, but the speciality of the present one lies in its illustrations of logical principles from old and new writers, and from the political and social discussions of the period. Examples in logic are usually very uninteresting in themselves, and too brief to be attractive. In Logic for the Million. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logic for the Million: A Familiar Exposition of the Art of Reasoning, With an Appendix on the Philosophy of Language In the present case we have no occasion for any name. We might simply say the Art of Reasoning. In the same way we say the art of nursing, the art of teaching, the art of dancing, or the art of fencing. Had either of these arts a Greek name, a writer would begin his treatise with stating the meaning of this name 3 and probably learned men would differ as to the propriety and extent of its application. Download or read book A Manual of Logic in Two Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by J. Welton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Logic, in Two, Vol. 1 of 2 This treatise aims at giving a fairly complete view of logical doctrine, as generally accepted at the present time. Of necessity, in a subject where so many conflicting opinions are advanced, some parts of the treatment are somewhat controversial but it is hoped that every view which is criticized is fairly stated. The discussions of disputed points have been mainly confined to the consideration of the theories of logical doctrine advanced in well-known works. It was felt that such a consideration would help in making clear those general principles which can be philosophically justified, and which form the ultimate foundation of the science. A new method of diagrammatically representing categorical propositions is suggested in 5 106, and it is hoped that some freshness of treatment will be found in other parts of the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Deductive Logic: A Manual for Students For a long time back there have been published books containing abundance of mathematical exercises, and not a few works consist exclusively of such exercises. In recent years the teachers of other branches of science, such as Chemistry and the Theory of Heat, have been furnished with similar collections of problems and numerical examples. There can be no doubt about the value of such exercises when they can be had. The great point in education is to throw the mind of the learner into an active, instead of a passive state. It is of no use to listen to a lecture or to read a lesson unless the mind appropriates and digests the ideas and principles put before it. The working of problems and the answering of definite questions is the best, if not almost the only, means of ensuring this active exercise of thought. It is possible that at Cambridge mathematical gymnastics have been pushed to an extreme, the study of the principles and philosophy of Mathematics being almost forgotten in the race to solve the greatest possible number of the most difficult problems in the shortest possible time. But there can be no manner of doubt that from the simple addition sums of the schoolboy up 'to problems in the Calculus of Variations and the Theory of Probability, the real study of Mathematics must consist in the student cracking his own nuts, and gaining for himself the kernel of understanding. Book A New Logic Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Logic From the professional logician I can expect no mercy. I have attacked his most cherished opinions, disputed his most sacred dogmas, and have held up to derision his most revered authorities. To him I am that most noxious of all vermin, the irregular practitioner; and I expect him to deal with me faith fully, after the manner of the orthodox to the heterodox. If he would only restrict his choice of weapons to those that are in the arsenal of Traditional Logic, I should rest in the complacent security of a modern battleship attacked by bows and arrows; but no logician reasons syllogistically, except in the formal argu ments with which he illustrates the syllogism, and the arrows that pierce me will be winged with feathers plucked from my own logical tail.
