Book excerpt: Transcript of a logbook and journal for the schooner POLLY, a privateer in the War of 1812, kept by Capt. Juduthan Upton, Jr. of Salem, Mass., December 8 1812-July 9 1813. Upton recorded the capture of the POLLY, December 23 1813, by the frigate PHOEBE, and his subsequent time aboard the British prison ship HECTOR, off the coast of Plymouth, England, and in Old Mill Prison, in Plymouth, England. Upton was exchanged for another prisoner and returned to Salem, Mass. on July 9, 1813. The transcript was prepared for publication, most likely, by the Historical Records Survey, 1937. Location of original is unknown.

Book excerpt: Journal kept by an unidentified crew member, possibly the captain, Jonathan Lester, aboard the sloop Polly during voyages from New London, Connecticut, to Suriname and Demerara, in South America, in 1794 and 1795. The volume contains log entries describing the weather, course changes, and activities of the crew and other news. Several entries note the weeklong illness of Mr. Perkins who died in October 1794. There are also accounts of cargo delivered, including oats, beef, pork, butter, and mules, and cargo received, including cotton, sugar, and rum. A twentieth century newspaper article on the Polly's voyage in 1794 is tipped into the front of the volume. The names Messrs. Andrew & Joseph Perkins, merchants in Norwich, Connecticut, and Samuel Perkins, are inscribed on the first page of the book. They are most likely the owners of the cargo that was shipped. It is unclear if any of these men were the Mr. Perkins who died during the 1794 voyage.
