Download or read book Lofty Tales written by William Borland and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William C. Borland started his adulthood hiking up all forty-six peaks of the Adirondack Mountains. Before long, the more adventurous individuals in his group began to hike the high points of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Then, they began talking about how to hike the 2,160-mile-long Georgia-to-Maine Appalachian Trail. After reading Seven Summits by Frank Wells and Dick Bass, who detailed how they climbed the highest mountain on each continent, Borland was inspired to set his sights even higher. Suddenly, it seemed possible for a mere mortal without superhuman climbing strength or skills to scale the highest mountains, and he decided to climb Mount McKinley (now known as Denali) in Alaska. From there, he began mountaineering and riding his bicycle on all seven continents.
Download or read book Kismetwali and Other Stories written by Reetika Khanna Nijhawan and published by Om Books International. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Details for Kismetwali and Other Stories Set against the backdrop of modern-day India, Kismetwali and Other Stories places the reader amidst circumstances that transcend place, purse and prestige. This octet of novellas offers a rare glimpse into the parallel lives of the privileged and penniless, converging on those astonishing moments when free will intercepts fate and the rigid divide between social classes is rendered insignificant. Each narrative showcases walas and walis of the working class—the common yet essential purveyors of goods and providers of service—as empowered individuals who take centre stage. The shavewala, a humble barber, becomes an intimate collaborator in a love story that spans the seven seas; the malishwali, a long-serving masseuse, conceals her mistress’s shocking secret while offering a gift of revelation to another; the kismetwali, a clairvoyant of unremarkable pedigree, solicits cosmic benefaction for her affluent clients. These socially eclipsed characters are the true protagonists in every story. About Reetika Khanna Nijhawan Reetika Khanna Nijhawan was born and raised in a small town in northern India. While growing up, she travelled the world extensively with her father, an officer in the merchant navy. After receiving her degree in Psychology from Delhi University, she worked as a flight attendant with Lufthansa German Airlines before settling down to write for ELLE and ELLE Décor in Mumbai. She later moved to Atlanta, where her work has been published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Khabar magazine. Kismetwali and Other Stories is her first work of fiction. She penned these eight novellas over time, while waiting in the carpool line outside her daughter’s school.

Download or read book Industrial Networks and Cinemas of India written by Monika Mehta and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-12-13 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume points to the limits of models such as regional, national, and transnational, and develops ‘network’ as a conceptual category to study cinemas of India. Through grounded and interdisciplinary research, it shows how film industries located in disparate territories have not functioned as isolated units and draws attention to the industrial traffic – of filmic material, actors, performers, authors, technicians, genres, styles, sounds, expertise, languages, and capital, across trans-regional contexts -- since the inception of cinema. It excavates histories of film production, distribution and exhibition, and their connections beyond regional and national boundaries, and between places, industrial practices, and multiple media. The chapters in this volume address a range of themes such as transgressive female figures; networks of authors and technicians; trans-regional production links and changing technologies, and new media geographies. By tracking manifold changes in the contexts of transforming media, and inter-connections between diverse industrial nodal points, this book expands the critical vocabulary in media and production studies and foregrounds new methods for examining cinema. A generative account of industrial networks, this volume will be useful for scholars and researchers of film studies, cinema studies, media studies, production studies, media sociology, gender studies, South Asian studies, and cultural studies.
Download or read book Sir Thomas Malory written by Marylyn Parins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Critical Heritage gathers together a large body of critical sources on major figures in literature. Each volume presents contemporary responses to a writer's work, enabling students and researchers to read for themselves, for example, comments on early performances of Shakespeare's plays, or reactions to the first publication of Jane Austen's novels. The carefully selected sources range from landmark essays in the history of criticism to journalism and contemporary opinion, and little published documentary material such as letters and diaries. Significant pieces of criticism from later periods are also included, in order to demonstrate the fluctuations in an author's reputation. Each volume contains an introduction to the writer's published works, a selected bibliography, and an index of works, authors and subjects. The Collected Critical Heritage will be available as a set of 68 volumes and the series will also be available in mini sets selected by period (in slipcase boxes) and as individual volumes.

Download or read book Folklore and Literature written by Bruce A. Rosenberg and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature's dependence on a few folktale plots is a cliche, and the significance of structuralist theory cannot have escaped many scholars, so Rosenberg's insistence on the interrelation of folklore and literature is nothing new. He surveys the foundational work of Aarne, Thompson, and Propp and the oral-formulaic theories of Parry and Lord, but the references are too elliptical to be clear to nonspecialists, while explanations of methodology will be redundant to folklorists. Bits of good material, of interest to medievalists and other literary scholars (especially on Beo wulf and on Chaucerian narrative), are buried in this disjointed collection of chapters. Serious editorial lapses include the complete absence of footnotes, forcing inappropriate supplementary matter into the body of the text and further blurring its weak structure. The parity of literary and narrative-folklore studies is the author's underlying theme, but his preoccupation with status in the academic hierarchy does nothing to make his arguments on the symbiosis of the two disciplines more convincing. - Patricia Dooley, Univ. of Washington Lib.
